Thu, 8 Sep 2005 08:50:34 -0700 Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Derrick Brooks understands the business aspect of his profession, but says that it is "very important" for him to retire as a member of the Buccaneers. "Let's not be naive to the system. For the countless examples of people who have changed teams, there are countless of examples of people who haven't changed teams," the 32-year old Brooks said. " Darrell Green finished his career with the Redskins and he always was one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league. Brett Favre got a $100-million contract a few years ago and they found a way to keep him, so it can be done. Is it important to me? Yes. Is it in my hands? No." Brooks has five years remaining on his contract, which calls for a $12.7 salary-cap hit by 2009, a number the club will likely be forced to restructure at some point.

Buccaneers: Five things to know
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. There is lunacy making its way through Tampa, and it seems to be something that is gaining steam even in its absurdity. Training camp is barely under way, and already Jon Gruden is facing questions about job security. (AP) It's coming from the talk-radio loonies, who have suddenly found a spot on the proverbial coaching hot seat for one Jon Gruden. Less than three years removed from winning a Super Bowl that made Gruden the hottest coach in the league, Gruden's heat has moved lower, down to the seat of his pants at least in the minds of some. Can it really be? Can 20 losses and two consecutive losing, playoff-less seasons really have Gruden facing a win-or-else season with the Buccaneers in 2005?
