He was the last of the Sixty Minute Men. Chuck Bednarik played both ways for much of his college and pro careers. As a starting center and middle linebacker, "Concrete Charley" would get 'em coming and going. One of his career highlights was the 1960 Eastern Conference Championship game where his Philidelphia Eagles took on the Green Bay Packers. At age 35 and still pounding, he played almost every minute of that game. Chuck's game-saving tackle of Jim Taylor resulted in a win for the Eagles. That 58-minute performance gained him a $250 bonus and an All-Pro selection as linebacker.
It was another game-saving tackle for which Chuck Bednarik would most be remembered: the "guy he put to sleep", NY Giants' Frank Gifford was on the injured list for a year after meeting Iron Man Bednarik on the field. "It was one of the hardest tackles I ever made, but it was a clean shot", says Chuck. Not knowing the extent of Gifford's injury, Chuck was criticized for his on-field celebration after the clean hit.
It was WWII that brought Chuck Bednarik to football. As a high school athlete, he was an exceptional baseball and basketball player, but moderately above average in football. When the war came around Chuck joined up with the Air Force. He was a waist-gunner on a B-24 and took part in 30 bombing missions over Nazi Germany. Those missions (more than 50 aerial missions in all) earned him the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters and five battle stars. Just the first of the many awards Chuck Bednarik would receive throughout his life.

Freeney Named Bednarik Award Finalist
Senior defensive end Dwight Freeney (Bloomfield, CT) is a finalist for the 2001 Bednarik Award, presented to the nation’s outstanding defensive player by the Maxwell Football Club. Freeney finished the regular season with 17.5 sacks, which is an NCAA, BIG EAST and Syracuse single-season record. He also established an NCAA record for fumbles forced and recovered with a total of 11 (eight forced and three recovered) in 2001. His eight forced fumbles is a BIG EAST conference single-season record. The winner of the 2001 Bednarik Award will be announced on Thursday, December 6 during the ESPN College Football Awards Show, which will be broadcast live from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on ESPN. The Bednarik Award is named after Chuck Bednarik, known as the “Iron Man,” a two-way standout with the Philadelphia Eagles for 14 years. A three-time All-American at the University of Pennsylvania, Bednarik is a member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. In addition to being a finalist for the Bednarik Award, Freeney was announced as a member of the Football Writers Association of America’s 2001 All-America Team today. Earlier this month Freeney was named a first-team All-American by the Football News for his record-breaking performance during the 2001 season. Freeney is also a finalist for the 2001 Rotary Lombardi Award and the 2001 Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the.

Almost 80, ex-Eagle Bednarik is still delivering hits
February 3, 2005 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. There is great passion for the Eagles and their fan base is very much enjoying this Super Bowl ride. There is, however, one great name in franchise history who doesn't care to get wrapped up in the proceedings. ADVERTISEMENT Chuck Bednarik. They called him "Concrete Charlie" when he roamed the gridiron for the Eagles from 1949-62, a legendary performer and arguably the greatest of the two-way players. His is a lost art, players having long ago been groomed to play a specific position on offense or defense, but never on both sides of the ball. Bednarik detests that about today's NFL. "Today's players don't have respect for the game," he said from his home in Allentown, Pa., not far from Bethlehem, where he grew up. "These 340-, 360-pound men? They couldn't play both ways the way the game was intended. It's a joke." A Hall of Famer and the only Eagle to play on both NFL Championship teams of 1949 and 1960, Bednarik concedes he's "a bitter man" because there is so much money in the game now and he's left with a relative pittance of a pension. The most he ever made in a season was $27,000. "I'll be 80 on May 1 and I know if they offered me $5 million, I could come back and snap the ball on punts and kicks," said Bednarik. "I know I could. I'd play one year and then retire."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Chuck Bednarik holds a grudge only slightly larger than his legacy as the last of the 60-minute men.
Known for his hard-nosed play and big hits, Bednarik is just as well-known for his biting, blunt diatribes about today's NFL, Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and any other topic that reminds him the game isn't the same as when he played.
He also is protective of his Hall of Fame legacy. While he boasts about playing both center and linebacker for part of his 14-year career, Bednarik is equally as proud to have played on the last Eagles team to win a championship (1960).
That's why Bednarik will be rooting against the Eagles in the Super Bowl against New England. He has no desire to ever see the franchise win another title.
"I can't wait until the Super Bowl is over," said Bednarik, who played for the Eagles from 1949 to 1962. "I hope the 1960 team remains the last one to win. I hope it stays that way."
Bednarik admits he's jealous and resentful about the salaries and spotlight today's players receive, calling them "overpaid and underplayed." Bednarik says he never made more than $27,000 and supplemented his income with an afternoon job selling concrete, earning him the nickname "Concrete Charlie."

James Hargrave Named to Bednarik Watch List
STORRS, Conn. (June 24, 2005) – University of Connecticut senior linebacker James Hargrave has been named to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award. The honor is annually bestowed upon the top defensive player in college football by the Maxwell Football Club of King of Prussia, Pa.
Hargrave is one of only three watch list selections from the BIG EAST Conference, joining linebacker H.B. Blades of Pittsburgh and defensive end James Wyche of Syracuse.
A native of Pleasantville, N.J., Hargrave will serve as a co-captain for the Huskies in 2005. He has started for each of the past two seasons at strongside “Husky” linebacker and leads all active UConn players with 208 career tackles, including 29.5 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks. His 29.5 TFLs rank seventh best in UConn history as he prepares to embark on his final season with the blue and white. Hargrave has missed just one game in his UConn career, playing in 35 with 25 starts. It was obvious that the Huskies had a future star from his first career start when he filled in for injured team captain Jamal Lundy against Ohio on Sept. 21, 2002 and led UConn with 17 tackles, including a pair of TFLs, to earn the team’s defensive game ball.
