Official Site Jaguars hire Bates as assistant coach NFL.com wire reports JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 21, 2003) Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio has his top three assistants in place. Del Rio hired former Dallas Cowboys player Bill Bates as special teams coach, joining Mike Smith as defensive coordinator and Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator. Del Rio hired the two coordinators Monday and said he wants to have his entire staff in place before the Super Bowl. Bates served as the assistant special teams and defensive nickel package coach for the Dallas Cowboys for the past two seasons. The 43-year-old Bates was one of the most popular players in the history of the Cowboys after playing and coaching in Dallas for 20 years. Smith joined the Ravens in 1999 after 12 seasons at Tennessee Tech. He was on the Baltimore staff with Del Rio in 2000 when the Ravens won the Super Bowl. Musgrave is a former NFL quarterback who played with the 49ers and Broncos. He spent the last two seasons as offensive coordinator at Virginia, and before that was quarterbacks coach for the Panthers.

The ex-Browns coaches just keep coming. And in a week and a half, in the season finale against the Houston Texans, it will be Chris Palmer going against his former club. Under difficult circumstances. This will be only the second head coaching position of his career for Bates, and his first since 1985 with the San Antonio Gunslingers of the USFL. As such, Bates understands what Robiskie is experiencing since being named coach on Nov. 30 after Butch Davis resigned. Not totally. Unlike Bates, Robiskie has yet to win a game. He is 0-3 since taking over and says he must get at least one victory to improve his chances of being hired as head coach on a permanent basis once the season is over.

Tap on the shoulder: Bates sacked Vialli
Ken Bates, ousted from the board of Wembley Stadium, was a victim of the forthright approach to business that has made Chelsea such a commerical success, argues BBC Sport Online's Claire Stocks. The sound of Ken Bates, one of the most ebullient, idiosyncratic figures in English football, sounding off at those in authority is not rare. What is unusual is the sight of Bates beaten in a battle of wills and forced to step aside. In 18 years at the helm of Chelsea Football Club, Bates has seen off all-comers.
Even Jesus Christ only had one Pontius Pilate - I had a whole team of them
Ken Bates in his resignation letter to the Wembley board He has built a reputation at Stamford Bridge for his killer instinct. Under his reign, managers John Neal, John Hollins, Bobby Campbell, Ian Porterfield, David Webb, Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit and Gianluca Vialli have come and gone.

Bates Bids For Owls
Chel$ki exile Ken Bates has bid to put some of the £18m he made from the sale of the club into ailing giant Sheffield Wednesday. But the current board are having none of it. As the Financial Times put it, 'Dave Allen, the football club's pigeon-racing chairman, did not emerge from his dovecote.' Indeed, Allen, who is as blunt a speaker as cuddly Ken, described the claim made by Bates that the club was 'insolvent' as 'tripe'. He also expressed his disgust at the fact that the Wednesday Trust, a supporter-run organisation that controls 9.6 per cent of the shareholding, had backed Bates. He and two other directors gave the trust the shares when they bought out venture capitalists Charterhouse three years ago. Allen and his fellow directors control around 30 per cent of the shares. Bates offered to invest £10m in the club stating 'At 72, I have got one more challenge left in me and I would like to take that on here.'
Sheffield Wednesday have the largest wage bill in the Second Division where they are likely to remain next year. They are expected to declare a total debt of £25m while plans to sell their training ground to Asda in an attempt to raise £10m have been blocked by the city council. Nevertheless, they still attract an average gate of 22,238, one thousand more than Sheffield United who are Premiership promotion hopefuls.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. DON'T CALL JACK DEL RIO A players' coach. "I'm a former player who coaches," he says. That might seem like a small distinction, but Del Rio has tried to emphasize it since he was hired as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in January 2003, at the tender age of 39. Del Rio was just seven years removed from his last training camp as a player when he got the Jacksonville job, and he had just six years of experience as an assistant coach. Del Rio was introduced at a news conference at Alltel Stadium that was open to the public, and he received a thunderous ovation when he said. "This is a new beginning, and we will bring back passion to this stadium." He got another round of applause when he said, "This is our house." That was an obvious reference to Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who called Alltel Stadium one of his team's home fields after beating the Jaguars there two times in 1999, including once in the playoffs.

Sunday, July 19, 1998 Like Bill Bates, Mark Tuinei and Tony Tolbert should have a chance to say goodbye By Randy Galloway / The Dallas Morning News DALLAS You tell me. If Bill Bates deserves all this, meaning his own retirement media conference, where he also walked right into a Cowboys' coaching job; about 50 inches in this sports section devoted to the football life and times of Bates; plus being added to the Channel 11 sports staff as a football analyst and station goodwill ambassador ... . If Bates can exit the NFL player ranks with all these trumpets blaring, how does anyone explain the continuing sound of silence for Tony Tolbert and Mark Tuinei? Age and aching bones are breaking up the once-great Dallas dynasty, and when Chan Gailey took over as coach, he accelerated a retirement process that, frankly, had been allowed to drag. While Jerry Jones, who is in Wichita Falls, pointed out again Friday, "This is not a youth movement," he did hold on to some of his relics far too long. And it seems to have taken Gailey to remind Jerry of that.
