1977 Topps Mexican Football Cards
By Patrick Mondout Topps produced a set of football cards in Spanish for the Mexican market in 1977. The cards were sold in packs with two cards and stick of gum. The gum invariable left stains on the card it was closest to, which means it that half the cards out there have gum stains. Collectors also have to contend with the scarcity of the cards. A complete set is nearly unheard of and one in excellent condition would command thousands of dollars. Even the packs the cards came in are valuable. The five different "Futbol Americano Profesional" packs featured Mike Boryla, Steve Bartkowski, Bob Griese, O.J. Simpson, and Brian Sipe on the front. The cards are virtually identical to the 528 card American set , with the exception of the Spanish language. Unlike O-Pee-Chee cards, these were not bilingual. Here's a checklist: 1 Passing Leaders

1977 Topps Football Cards
By Patrick Mondout Topps produced another 528 football card set in 1977, and it is one of the most attractive of the decade. The only real downers were the team checklists cards (see below; they were replaced by team leader cards starting in ). Running backs that ran for at least 1000 yards had a special logo on the front of their cards. Rookie cards included Steve Largent, Lee Roy Selmon, Mike Haynes, Mike Webster (what would a Super70s football card set be without a Steeler Hall of Fame rookie card?), Butch Johnson, Danny White, Dave Casper, Harry Carson, Pat Haden and Jim Zorn. Topps also produced an extremely scarce Spanish-language set of all 528 cards for the Mexican market. It's one of the most mysterious and valuable football card sets of all time. 1977 Topps at a Glance Back Checklist Wax Pack Mexican Leaders Record Breakers

History
We are fed so many statistics nowadays that it's easy to take them for granted and assume they've always been there. But, although major-league baseball began distributing weekly statistical updates early in the twentieth century, football was much slower to follow suit. The National Football League, founded in 1920, didn't begin compiling official statistics until 1932. And the National Collegiate Athletic Association, founded in 1906, was content simply to oversee collegiate football, primarily regulating eligibility, until 1937. By then, college football had outgrown regionalism, thanks in large part to the post-season bowl games, and fans were interested in what was happening, not only in their own areas, but elsewhere in the country. As a result, the NCAA established its first statistical service, receiving weekly reports from member institutions and compiling them to produce listings of statistical leaders. At first, raw numbers were used to determine "champions" in the various statistical categories. However, in 1970 the NCAA began using per-game averages to determine leaders in most categories, because the number of games scheduled by a given team could vary from 9 to 12.

(June 2, 2002) Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Steve Bartkowski shot 6-over-par 78 in the final round to win the NFL Player Championship at the NFL Golf Classic . Bartkowski, the No. 1 draft pick in 1975 and the NFC's MVP in 1980, made one birdie, 11 pars, five bogeys and one double-bogey in blustery conditions at Upper Montclair Country Club to top the six-player NFL field. San Diego Chargers tight end David Binn shot 9-over-par 81 to finish second, while former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway posted 10-over-par 82 to place third. "It was a struggle out there," said Bartkowski, who participated in the event for the first time. "I knew it was going to be that kind of day after hitting my first tee shot. It was a survival test, so you just kind of hang in there and try not to get too down and keep double-bogey out of the picture. "I only know how to play one way," he said of his final-round strategy. "I don't get out there and try to protect or try to steer the ball around. I just try to hit the fairway and, with club selection, I try not to think too much about it. I just want to hit it up on the green somewhere. I putted the ball really well this week. I figured if I could get putts at it, I would have a chance to make one or two." Bartkowski, who plays to approximately a 1 handicap, is a founding member of the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children as well as a founding member of the Celebrity Players Tour.

Will Michael Vick be remembered in the same vein as John Elway, a No. 1 draft pick who turned out to be one of the greatest players in the game, or in the same vein as Tom Cousineau, a number one who became a footnote in history? Vick, selected by the Atlanta Falcons with the first pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, is part of a small, distinctive fraternity. His selection on April 21 marked the 11th time since 1970 that the No. 1 pick or the player selected with it was traded before he played a game. In this case, the San Diego Chargers swapped the chance to draft Vick in favor of three draft choices and wide receiver Tim Dwight. A wise decision? Let's look at the last 10 times No. 1 was traded: Houston Oilers: Traded No. 1 for DE Tody Smith, WR Billy Parks. Dallas Cowboys: Acquired DE Ed (Too Tall) Jones. Verdict: To be fair, this trade was made prior to the 1973 season. .. The 6-foot, 9-inch Jones played until 1989 and played in three Super Bowls for the Cowboys. .. Neither Parks nor Smith was in the NFL beyond 1976. ... TRADE HELPED: DALLAS.

Justin Vedder Enjoys Best Quarterbacking Debut In Cal History

It didnt take long for new Cal quarterback Justin Vedder to establish his presence as the leader of the Cal offense. While making his debut in the starting line-up, Vedder changed the play at the line of scrimmage on the first 2 plays in the Astrodome against Houston last week. That type of confidence and command of the offense is just what the offensive coaches are looking for at the quarterback position, but its not a trait you often find in a transfer player whos only been in the program since January. Vedder ended his opener by throwing for 321 yards, the 28th-best single-game performance in Cal history. According to Cal quarterback coach Troy Taylor, Vedder didnt miss a check all night, saying his control of the game and the offense was excellent. Below is a list of the many of the quarterback debut performances over the years. Cal Quarterback Debut Performances

Atlanta Falcons History HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY Atlanta Falcons - Team History Atlanta Falcons, professional football team and one of five teams in the Western Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). Under the league’s realignment plan, which will take affect in 2002, the Falcons will play in the South Division of the NFC. The Falcons play in the Georgia Dome and wear uniforms of black, red, silver, and white. The team’s name was inspired by a letter from schoolteacher Julia Elliott of Griffin, Georgia, who won a contest in 1965 to name the new franchise, writing: “The falcon is proud and dignified, with courage and fight. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition.”
Under the direction of head coach Dan Reeves, the Falcons franchise captured its first NFC championship following the 1998 regular season. A group of seasoned veterans led the team, including quarterback Chris Chandler, linebacker Cornelius Bennett, and kicker Morten Andersen. Atlanta advanced to Super Bowl XXXIII, where they lost to the Denver Broncos.
Altanta was awarded an NFL franchise for the 1966 season. The team’s first head coach was Norb Hecker, a former assistant to the legendary Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers. Linebacker Tommy Nobis was the team’s first draft pick; in 1966 he captured the NFL rookie of the year award.
