Posted: Wednesday October 06, 1999 03:30 PM By Ivan Maisel Close your eyes and envision a college football dream team on which John Elway could hand off to Earl Campbell or Barry Sanders or rifle a pass to Ozzie Newsome or Randy Moss. A team on which Doug Atkins and Billy Ray Smith would knock offensive tackles into the quarterback while coach Tom Osborne watched intently from the sideline. A team for the ages, yes but a two-touchdown underdog to the squad you are about to meet. SI molded its Team of the Century by employing the methods current coaches use. Not only did we adhere to the 85-scholarship limit, but we also selected more offensive players than defensive ones. We took transfers ( Doc Blanchard, from North Carolina to Army; George Connor, Holy Cross to Notre Dame; and O.J. Simpson, City College of San Francisco to USC). We even suspended a player, having caught George Gipp in the poolroom more often than the classroom. Because passing styles have changed over the course of the century, we threw tight ends, flankers and wide receivers into a single pool and made our selections without regard to exactly what receiver's position they played. We took quarterbacks who had winning records and a flair for the unexpected: Tommie Frazier overcame career-threatening blood clots in his right leg to win two national championships;

Jim Parker, 71, legendary lineman of Colts' title teams
July 19, 2005 BALTIMORE Jim Parker, the Hall of Famer who anchored the Baltimore Colts' offensive line during the club's glory years, died yesterday of heart failure and kidney disease at a Columbia, Md., nursing home. He was 71. A mainstay on the Colts' National Football League championship teams of 1958 and 1959, Mr. Parker was a superb, punishing blocker. He carved out paths for such runners as Lenny Moore and guarded John Unitas, his stoop-shouldered quarterback, with the ferocity of an embassy Marine. ''As Johnny's protector, Jim was second to none," said Moore, the Hall of Famer who ran amok in Mr. Parker's wake. ''If Jim got through the line, I'd be right on his hip because I knew he'd clear out the area." A first-round draft pick in 1957 from Ohio State, Mr. Parker played 11 years with the Colts. He made All-Pro eight consecutive times four at guard and four at tackle. ''Any place he played on that line, Jim kicked tail," recalled John Mackey, the Colts' tight end. ''John (Unitas) never worried about his blind side; Parker was good enough to annihilate the best defensive end." At 6-foot-3 and 273 pounds, Mr. Parker was, at the time, the biggest player ever drafted by Baltimore. ''He blocked out the sun," said Ernie Accorsi, former Colts general manager.

Chicago Bears History HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY Chicago Bears - Team History Chicago Bears, professional football team and one of five teams in the Central Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). Under the league’s realignment plan, which will take affect in 2002, the Bears will play in the North Division of the NFC. The Bears play at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois, and wear uniforms of navy blue, orange, and white.
Chicago has collected nine NFL titles and ranks behind only the Green Bay Packers in overall league crowns. The Bears were the NFL’s most dominant team during the 1930s and 1940s, earning six league titles. George Halas, a cofounder of the NFL, collected 324 career victories during his 30 seasons as Chicago’s head coach. He coached many future Hall of Fame members, including quarterback Sid Luckman and running backs Red Grange and Bronko Nagurski. Chicago made eight trips to the playoffs from 1984 to 1994 and won the Super Bowl in 1986. Running back Walter Payton, the NFL’s all-time leading rusher with 16,726 yards, produced ten 1,000-yard seasons in these 11 years.
The Bears franchise was founded as the Decatur Staleys in 1920 by A. E. Staley of the Staley Starch Company. He hired George Halas to organize, coach, and play on the team. On September 17, 1920, Halas and representatives from 11 other teams met in Canton, Ohio, and organized the American Professional Football Association—the precursor to the NFL. Halas assumed ownership of the team in 1921 with his co-head coach, Dutch Sternaman. They moved the team to Chicago’s Cubs Park (renamed Wrigley Field in 1926). The club won the new league’s first title in 1921, and a year later Halas and Sternaman renamed the team the Bears.
