MORE INFORMATION About The Fels Planetarium
In 1933, Samuel S. Fels contributed funds so that the new Franklin Institute could have a planetarium, only the second in the United States. The Planetarium's popularity continues today; it has provided an experience for more than 9 million visitors and school children.
The Planetarium's new design optimizes the viewing experience. The 2002 renovations included replacement of the original 40,000 pound-plus, perforated stainless steel dome, built in 1933. The new premium seamless dome is lighter and is 60-feet in diameter. Manufactured by Spitz Inc. of Chadds Ford, PA, the dome is the first of its kind in the United States.

Visitors can explore the far reaches of the macro-universe with stars and galaxies and the micro-universe of the living cell, all in our planetarium. Click here for more information on the International Space Station downlink Celebrating Over 60 Years of Exploring the Cosmos On October 24, 1939, Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science officially opened its doors as the fifth major planetarium in North America, joining an elite group of planetariums in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. The Buhl quickly established itself and Pittsburgh as leaders in the area of informal science education. During 1940, the Planetarium's first full year of operation, nearly 200,000 visitors were introduced to the wonders of the Universe in a revolutionary environment that foreshadowed the experience of the modern science center.

Planetarium
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A planetarium is a theater built primarily for presenting educational and entertaining shows about astronomy and the night sky, or for training in celestial navigation . The plural of planetarium is planetariums or planetaria . The term "planetarium" is sometimes used generically to describe other devices which illustrate the solar system, such as a computer simulation or an orrery A typical Planetarium building James S. Overview
The most striking feature of most planetaria is their large dome shaped projection screens onto which scenes of stars planets and other celestial objects can be made to appear and move realistically to simulate the complex 'motions of the heavens'. These domes can be anything from 3-30m in diameter , accommodating from 1 to 500 people. Traditionally, planetaria domes were mounted horizontally, matching the natural horizon of the real night sky. However, because that configuration requires highly inclined chairs for comfortable viewing "straight up", increasingly domes are being built tilted from the horizontal by between 5 and 30 degrees to provide greater comfort. Tilted domes tend to create a favoured 'sweet spot' for optimum viewing, centrally about a third of the way up the dome from the lowest point. For this reason, tilted domes generally have seating arranged 'stadium-style' in rows as opposed to the traditional epicentric/circular arrangement of seating common in horizontal domes.

Since 1926, planetariums have been providing immersive environments for audiences to see the night sky. The aim of these establishments was not only to educate people about our observable galaxy, but also to give them an immersive, entertaining, and educational experience. Historically, this experience has always been in black and white, using fiber or calligraphic lights that show star fields. In the new millennium, scientists are making dramatic discoveries about our universe. Planetariums are challenged to keep their content relevant and exciting, particularly as a new computer-savvy generation grows up with easy access to the Internet, including the latest imagery from space. Computer-based education and games have made this generation accustomed to a lot of interactivity. In contrast, previous generations grew up learning about events in a very linear fashion, through radio and television. In many cases, the changing expectations of the public, combined with ever-increasing information and numerous alternative entertainment options, have led to declining popularity of and low attendance at planetariums. But the International Space Station and the continual presence of humans in space are rejuvenating interest in space exploration and planetariums. In the 1970s, a similar rise in the public's interest in planetariums was correlated with man's trip to the moon.
