htmlAdWH('93212816', '728', '90'); Main ASTRONOMY SOFTWARE These software programs are so varied in content and download size that I'll leave it up to you to make a selection. I have many of them on my pc and use them often. Don't be mislead by "Freeware". Some of them rival or exceed the "Shareware" programs. Most are Planetarium programs, that is, they depict the night sky, user selectable from your location on the planet. They all have a homepage with descriptions of their product. If you are new to astronomy and don't know what to expect I recommend you stick with the Freeware programs until you get familiar with the sky. Then if you want a more complete program go for the Shareware. It's up to you. By all means, let me know if you try any of these selections and whether or not you found them useful. mailto:nlpjp@aol.com My personal freeware and shareware recommendations FREEWARE StarFinder Added 9/23/02 Great for beginners and only 300kb zip Csgw Skyguide An easy program for beginners to learn each constellation Hallo Northern Sky Excellent planetarium software Cartes du Ciel (SkyCharts)Some say it's the #1 Freeware planetarium Virtual Moon Atlas Fantastic Moon observing tool by Patrick Chevalley StarCats Viewer for the Bright, Hipparchos and Tycho catalogs

First, your webmaster is not very plugged into the Mac world. If you find incredibly good free astronomy software for the Mac, let me know. You can arrange to show it to me on your machine, and if suitable, I can post a link to it here. With the advent of OS-X/Cocoa/Darwin, I expect to see much more development, and ports of existing Linux/Unix packages to the Mac. Much of this is free and of high quality. Second, there are MANY astronomy programs out there, especially for the Windows platform. I don't have time to review them all, and the links here are to those that I have checked out recently. I will post mostly freeware listings, but will include some links to pay software that is exceptional and not advertized. The listings will probably grow (slowly) over time. Celestia Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All travel in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit. It has recently been ported to Darwin/Unix/Mac OS-X (and a pure Cocoa version is well underway). For the Mac OS-X version, go to:
