Food shopping
The most convenient (and most expensive ) supermarket is Sainsbury's Central in the center of town. It's generally packed with students, and rarely has good offers or bargains , but can be very convenient for picking up the odd item. There is a large Tesco's and Asda not far out of town on Newmarket Road, and a large Sainsbury's if you keep going past Asda (on a bike) on Coldhams Lane. Iceland and Aldi can be found on Histon Road, not very far from the IoA. The market in Market Square has many vegetable stands, except on Sundays but on Sundays it does have a stand selling fresh ostrich meat!

The New Solar System Summarizes what we've learned from interplanetary explorations in the last 25 years. My primary reference for The Nine Planets T. Rex and the Crater of Doom The story of the discovery of the impact crater that doomed the dinosaurs. Nice description of how science works in the real world. Encyclopedia of the Solar System A more scholarly introduction to planetary science for those who want to dig a little deeper. The Compact NASA Atlas of the Solar System This 'road map' of the solar system contains lots of maps and data as well as photos. Bad Astronomy The truth is out there; so is a lot of baloney. Here's the straight story on many popular urban legends, myths and misconceptions. Great fun, too! Build Your Own Telescope Want to see the planets for yourself? It's actually pretty easy to make a simple but powerful telescope. Here's how. This website is an overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of each planet and the major moons in our solar system. Each page has my text and

Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) is a teaching and learning strategy combining frequent Web-based preparatory assignments with classroom activities that promote active learning. The instructor incorporates the questions from the Web assignments into class, setting the level of discussion based on students' responses; this makes classroom activities both more efficient and more closely tuned to students' needs. Completing these preparatory assignments several times each week encourages students to keep up with the material by studying throughout the week.

    2006 Wall Calendar
    Back Cover Image

Black holes, stars, planets, meteor showers, comets, and galaxies are just part of what the night skies have to offer. Stan Shadick explains all things celestial in this award-winning calendar that features star maps with horizon scenes for orienting novice stargazers to the heavens; inset maps illustrating planetary conjunctions and tips for finding Venus in the daytime sky; and times for viewing eclipses of JupiterÕs moons with a spotting scope. Daily commentaries describe constellation mythology, cosmic events, and celestial discoveries. Find out what to watch for in the skies every night of the year. On a dark night, most of the stars described in this calendar can be viewed with the unaided eye or with binoculars. The star maps in this calendar are year-round reference charts for people living in Canada, U.S. cities from Washington D.C. to San Francisco and points north, and most of Europe. SkywatcherÕs Calendar 2006 is the perfect way to explore the mysteries of the heavens. Competing against 290 entries from Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Israel, and the United States, Skywatcher's 2003 won the Silver Award for the "Most Informative Wall Calendar" in the National Awards Retail Division. It also won the Bronze Award for "Most Original Calendar" in the World Calendar Division. This is a juried competition which ranks as the calendar industry's premier competition, recognizing the highest quality calendar design and production.

The North Jersey Astronomical Group (NJAG) is an astronomy club composed of about fifty people interested in all aspects of stargazing. The NJAG meets regularly (usually the second Wednesdays of each month except August) at Montclair State University in Upper Montclair, NJ. We also hold weekly Public Telescope Nights during the Fall and Spring semesters. The next monthly meeting will be Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at 8 PM. The Wednesday monthly meetings are free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served in Richardson Hall, Room 232 at MSU. Remember to pay the parking meter machine, even after dark. Here are directions to MSU. For more information visit our new webpage at http://www.njastro.org At our annual dinner in March, 2004 Kevin supplied us all with eclipse glasses for the upcoming transit of Venus. Many people also won door prizes.
Our March, 2003 field trip to the Fells Planetarium in Philadelphia was also a lot of fun!
Weekly Public Telescope Nights will be all clear Thursdays from September 8, 2005 to December 15, except November 24 (Thanksgiving).

  • The scientific study of matter in outer space, especially the positions, dimensions, distribution, motion, composition, energy, and evolution of celestial bodies and phenomena. A system of knowledge or beliefs about celestial phenomena: the various astronomies of ancient civilizations.
  • [Middle English astronomie , from Old French, from Latin astronomia , from Greek astronomiā astro- , astro- + -nomiā , -nomy.]
    Encyclopedia
astronomy, branch of science that studies the motions and natures of celestial bodies, such as planets stars , and galaxies ; more generally, the study of matter and energy in the universe at large. Ancient Astronomy Astronomy is the oldest of the physical sciences. In many early civilizations the regularity of celestial motions was recognized, and attempts were made to keep records and predict future events. The first practical function of astronomy was to provide a basis for the calendar , the units of month and year being determined by astronomical observations. Later, astronomy served in navigation and timekeeping. The Chinese had a working calendar as early as the 13th cent.
