CTC Research
Members of the CTC pursue research in a wide range of areas within theoretical astrophysics. Subject areas of particular emphasis include: Solar System Astrophysics: orbital dynamics of rings and moons, fundamentals of resonance-driven evolution, mechanics of asteroid and planetesimal collisions, evolution of dust, solar system origins Galactic Astrophysics: formation of stars and planets, dynamics of the interstellar medium, photodissociation regions, spiral structure, dynamics of barred galaxies, star cluster dynamics High Energy Astrophysics: radiation from neutron stars and black holes, gravitational radiation, diagnostics of AGN, fundamentals of accretion physics, magnetohydrodynamics of jets and winds, gas physics in galaxy clusters Cosmology: galaxy formation, intergalactic medium (Lyman-alpha forest and reionization), the formation of the first stars, black holes, globular clusters and the origin of dwarf galaxies. A major emphasis of the CTC is on development and application of computational tools to enable forefront astrophysics research. These tools include symplectic integration codes for orbit evolution, parallel tree codes for N-body problems, and grid-based codes for magnetohydrodynamics. CTC members are also involved in development of community software packages for visualization and analysis of numerical simulations. Large-scale numerical simulations are performed both on the Department's in-house Beowulf cluster, the Borg,

Astronomy in the FY 2006 Budget Kevin B. Marvel, American Astronomical Society ; and K.E. Saavik Ford, Carnegie Institution of Washington Highlights - The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is reorganized under the FY 2006 budget. The former Office of Space Science is combined with other offices to form the new Science Mission Directorate. Quoting the NASA SMD web page: “The Science Mission Directorate will carry out the scientific exploration of the Earth, Moon, Mars and beyond; chart the best route of discovery; and reap the benefits of Earth and space exploration for society. A combined organization is best able to establish an understanding of the Earth, other planets and their evolution, bring the lessons of our study of Earth to the exploration of the Solar System, and to assure the discoveries made here will enhance our work there.” The directorate has three divisions, Earth-Sun System, Solar System ( e.g.

Local News Dollars From Heaven: NASA spending hits wide area including Pa., W.Va. and Ohio First of a three-part series Sunday, February 16, 2003 By Tom Barnes, Post-Gazette Staff Writer The shocking news of the Space Shuttle Columbia's explosion had barely settled in before congressional leaders were questioning the future of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its $15 billion annual budget. But the probing questions about why the space shuttle disintegrated and what the space program's future should be may obscure one compelling reason for the agency's existence: NASA pumps lots of money into the national economy, and virtually every state in the union reaps some benefit from space program spending or from spinoff companies that are based on space program research.

Since the 1930s the Rio Grande Valley has been the site of important scientific research. The National Laboratories have drawn scientists and research organizations from all over the world to New Mexico. Here are some pointers to the home pages of scientific organizations in New Mexico. We include some vendors of scientific equipment, software, etc. The Advanced Computing Laboratory maintains a homepage at LANL. The Albuquerque Resource Center (ARC) supports high performance computing for a diverse community, including the Department of Defense and Department of Energy research labs, graduate and undergraduate educational and research institutions, and leading-edge commercial users. The ARC is one of two components of the High Performance Computing and Research Center at the University of New Mexico. The Alliance for Photonic Technology The Apache Point Observatory consists of The Astrophysical Research Consortium's 3.5-meter telescope, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey 2.5-m telescope with 0.6-m sky monitor telescope, and New Mexico State University's 1.0-m telescope. The latter three are under construction. This page has a lot of information of interest to amateur astronomers, including images of the notorious Hale-Bopp Comet . To supplement research activity, the Ames Fellows participate in specially organized tours, seminars, workshops, and weekly noon-time talks which will be given by NASA senior technical specialists on major programs at Ames. At the end of the summer, each Fellow will present brief oral and written reports on his or her research. Ames Research Center is located in the heart of one of the world's most dynamic, technical and education-oriented communities Silicon Valley. Its state-of-the-art facilities include: wind tunnels such as the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC), the world's largest wind tunnel; advanced flight simulators; the Numerical Aerospace Simulation (NAS) Facility, which provides a full-spectrum supercomputer environment consisting of high-speed processors, mass storage, high-performance networks, and visualization hardware and software; and NASA Ames Research Center's FutureFlight Central, which is the world's premier technical design studio for 21st century airport operations and planning. The campus-like setting is located near the southwest edge of the San Francisco Bay and is approximately seven miles from Stanford University.
