News Scotgrid integrates local and Grid computing (May 2005) With over 250 CPUs and 2.5 Terabytes of disk space, the ScotGrid project at Glasgow University recently completed integration work that allows sharing of our cluster between local users and grid users. Of the 2,000 CPUs available to the UK Grid for Particle Physics, Glasgow's contribution now makes up more than 10% of the total. Since operations began on June 25th 2002, Glasgow's cluster has accumulated almost 2 million CPU hours and processed more than 200,000 jobs. A shared infrastructure is now used for the Grid and for local University research groups working on experimental and theoretical particle physics analyses, bioinformatics, information retrieval, device modelling and medical imaging. Prof. Tony Doyle, who leads Glasgow's Scotgrid team, comments: "The UK is the biggest single contributor to international projects, with more than a fifth of the Grid's processing power at its 16 sites. It is a major achievement that the ScotGrid project at Glasgow University has integrated use of local and Grid resources; this development provides a lead for sites elsewhere in the UK and the rest of the world." Glasgow student wins prize for best presentation (April 2005) Paula Harkins was awarded the prize for the best student presentation at the Ferroelectrics UK 2005 conference. Her talk, "EELS analysis of sol-gel deposited PZT (30/70) thin film", relates to her PhD work within the Solid State Physics Group in our department.

My current scopes are a Celestron 4.5" Newtonian Reflector, a Skywatcher 120mm Refract , both on German Equatorial Mounts, a dobsonian mounted Criterion 8" f/7.5 Newtonian Reflector, a Celestron 60mm Refractor, and a MCO 4" Maksutov Cassegrain Spotting Scope (my "travel scope").

Now that you have some feeling for the scales of time and space that astronomy This chapter covers the development of western astronomy and modern science. I focus on the rise of modern science in Europe, from the ancient Greeks to Isaac Newton. Other cultures were also quite interested and skilled in astronomy (the Mayans (link will display in another window), Egyptians, peoples of India and China come immediately to mind), but the Greeks were the first ones to try to explain how the universe worked in a logical, systematic manner using models and observations. Modern astronomy (and all of science) has its roots in the Greek tradition. If you would like a more thorough discussion of the history of astronomy than what I will present here, please take a look at Science and the Human Prospect by Ronald Pine (links will display in another window). I will give dates of when certain persons lived and worked to give you some reference points in the long history of astronomy. Don't worry about memorizing the dates. What is more important is to see the development of ideas and methods of modern science. I include images of world atlases from different time periods in this chapter and the next as another way to illustrate the advances in our understanding of our world and the universe.
