Astronomical Images Over the Web
Browsers Servers Web Serving Test There are quite a few servers which offer images of either user-selected or observed sections of the sky (sometimes called "postage stamps"). Current servers and client browsers mostly deal with simple single-wavelength FITS images with World Coordinate System (WCS) sky coordinate to pixel transforms encoded in their headers. See Mark Calabretta and Eric Greisen's paper
Image Servers
  • SkyView , a versatile Mosaic-based, multi-wavelength image server, has been implemented at NASA/Goddard. It also returns a FITS file with WCS information. The SkyView Basic Form lets you select center coordinates, a sky survey, and image projection, size, and brightness scaling. The SkyView Advanced Form adds exact image size specification in pixels and degrees, catalog overlays, multi-color image overlays, and contouring.
  • DSS : The STScI Catalogs and Surveys Branch has a nice form for retrieving an image from the Digitized Sky Survey CDROMs. The SAO Digitized Sky Survey Server forms-based server retrieves FITS or GIF images within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
  • Aladin Interactive Sky Atlas
An interactive software sky atlas visualizing digitized images of any part of the sky, with superimposed entries from astronomical catalogs.

The Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory
ASTROPHYSICS
Radio Astronomy at Cambridge
Radio astronomy is the study of celestial objects by means of the natural radio waves they emit. It tells us about the Solar System, our own Galaxy (the Milky Way), radio galaxies, quasars and cosmology. The signals emitted by radio sources can be received from the most distant parts of the Universe, though they are very weak when they reach us. Some of the problems are fundamental, like star formation, the energy sources of pulsars, quasars and radio galaxies, and the evolution of the Universe. They cannot be answered in terrestrial laboratories. Other problems are more technical like the design of highly sensitive receivers and computer software for telescope control and image analysis. These techniques are widely applicable outside astronomy. Radio astronomy is thus important both as pure research and as a training for scientists. Warning! The following pages contain some large graphics files. If your computer requires long download times we suggest that you initially browse the following pages in text-only mode. Night Environment Pollution and the Remedies through Legislation and Technology, in Czechia and in general
The main principle is simple,
  • don't use artificial lighting outdoors when and where it's not necessary
  • let the light go just the right direction: down (and steep enough). Lighting fixtures with no curved belly (a flat glass instead) do the job, (if lighting is really needed) like these in central Europe:
eco-settlement in Kassel Strasse der Solarenergie in Gleisdorf in front of Brno railway station parking lot in front of the museum in Gleisdorf The rules for minimizing adverse effects of lighting are well known. A draft template for the EU legislation is available in the directory. (The International Dark Sky Association submitted an incompatible template (Model Lighting Ordinance) to public discussion, an ad-hoc activity with serious concerns about it formed as Fix the Model Lighting Ordinance http://fixthemlo.org . I'm a a signer of their both documents, as are many renowned experts in the protection of the night environment). Most information at this site is in Czech only (see http://svetlo.astro.cz

The purpose of the Astronomy Digital Image Library (ADIL) is to collect astronomical, research-quality images and make them available to the astronomical community and the general public. Patrons access the Library through the World Wide Web to search for and browse images. Once images are located in the Library, users may download them to their local machines in FITS format for further analysis. The Library provides a number of benefits not only to those looking for images, but also to those who add images to the Library's growing collection. For more on what the ADIL is all about, check the introduction to the ADIL User's Guide The Library is being developed and maintained by the Radio Astronomy Imaging Group at the National Center for Supercomputing Application (NCSA) on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) . Includes news and images obtained by University of Hawaii astronomers.
    http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/images/hale-bopp/hale-bopp.html
    Comet Hale-Bopp
at the UH Institute for Astronomy
C omet Hale-Bopp is now moving away from the inner Solar System. As it receives less energy from the Sun, the cometary activity is slowing down, the tail is disappearing and the comet will rapidly become too faint to be observed with small telescope. While this marks the end of Hale-Bopp's public performance, it is not the end of the story: we plan to continue observing it as long as possible. The decrease and cessation of a comet's activity give very interesting information on its composition and history, so we are trying to observe comets as far as possible from the Sun. A typical comet nucleus has a diameter of 1 to 10 km, and is extremely dark, so that task is far from easy and requires big telescopes and very long exposures; in the case of Comet Hale-Bopp, we hope a to have an easier task, as we know that the nucleus is very bright. For more information, check out Karen Meech's Distant Comet Reseach page , and for an example of tricky observation, have a look at the faintest Solar System object ever observed: Comet Halley at the distance of Uranus , which is also the last image of that comet.

    Introduction
The emphasis here is on aesthetics, not science. While there is a little information to help you appreciate the images this is not a tutorial on the astronomy of nebulae. If these images inspire you to study stellar evolution that's great, but my intent is primarily to showcase a part of Nature's beauty that is accessible to us only via the telescope. This document is concerned exclusively with gaseous nebulae; galaxies and other stellar aggregates are not included. See Types of Nebulae for more details.
    The Structure of this document
The main body of this document consists of two pages for each of about 25 objects. The first page consists almost entirely of a large image of the object. The second page gives some basic information about the object and a list of references to other pictures of the object available on the Net. There are links at the bottom of each page to move to the next and previous objects, back and forth between the picture and description pages, and to the table of contents page. The appendices to this document include a list of the sources from which these images were collected; an extensive
