A Brief History of Astronomy
Astronomy is the oldest of the sciences. When Stoneage humans turned to an agrarian way of life and began to settle into communities, their interest must naturally have turned to the "heavens":
  • The seasons became important; during different times of the year, different stellar patterns appear in the sky. In the spring, Virgo and her accompanying constellations signal the time to prepare the earth, to plant crops, and to be wary of floods. In the fall, Orion rises to indicate time to harvest and to prepare for winter.
  • The approximate equivalence of the human menstrual cycle and the 30 day orbital period of the Moon which produces lunar phases led to the belief that the heavens, and the Moon in particular, were related to fertility. (What is the Moon's phase right now
  • To early humans facing an uncertain and changeable future, the constancy of the heavens must have suggested perfection and certainly led to deification in many cultures.
  • We may expect that eclipses would have been especially frightening to early humans. After predicting the seasons, eclipse prediction may have been one of the earliest astronomical activities.

Well, Despite the fact that I have done a lot of imaging my major here at Carleton is actually history. However, when it came time to write my comps thesis, I wanted to combine these two interests. After hearing Cindy Blaha's lecture on women astronomers at Harvard at the turn of the century, I decided to investigate these women. In the end I wrote my comps about U.S. Women Astronomers in the 20th century. Through the process of writing my comps I have gathered a bunch of useful information that I hope to give you a taste of here. If you would like to read my entire thesis, a copy of it is on file in the Carleton College History Department.

From an Astronomical History... The Hopkins Observatory is the oldest existing observatory in the United States. In 1834, Prof. Albert Hopkins went to England, with the permission of the trustees of the college, to search for astronomical apparatus. On his return, Prof. Hopkins enlisted some of his students to build a permanent observatory, which they constructed by hand from 1836 to 1838. That building is now the planetarium. It was originally located in the center of the quad; it was moved to the far end in 1908 and to its present location in 1961. The domed ceiling of the Planetarium was originally black with stars painted on it. In 1963, the projector was installed and is named in memory of Prof. Willis Milham, professor of astronomy from 1901 to 1942 and the third director of the observatory. His predecessor, Truman Henry Safford, was known as a child computing prodigy. His portrait hangs in the east room. The side rooms were turned into the Mehlin Museum of Astronomy in memory of Theodore Mehlin, fourth director of the planetarium and professor of astronomy at Williams from 1942 to 1971. The Field Memorial Professorship, founded in 1866, was occupied by Prof. Hopkins until 1872. Current Williams faculty are Jay M. Pasachoff, Field Memorial Professor, Director of Hopkins Observatory and Chair of the Department; Karen B. Kwitter, Professor of Astronomy; and Steven Souza, Ph.D., Instructor of Astronomy and Observatory Supervisor.
