Welcome to Astronomy for Kids! We're glad you're here, and we hope you enjoy your visit to the site. The Universe is a place that is vast beyond imagining, and what we will try to do is help you understand a little more about it. There are several sections to the site, but none of them takes a terribly long time to read, and all of them should be easily understood by kids of all ages. Grownups are welcome, too, as long as they promise to behave. Enjoy Your Visit! document.write(splashText); We are always interested in your opinions and questions, so feel free to send us a note anytime. If this is your first time here, you may want to visit the Site Information section first.
If you are looking for something in particular, you will probably be able to find it either in our Site Index or the Site Map
At the same time, some of life's most fascinating journeys are the ones we don't plan.
In the Sky Maps section, you can find out what's going on in the sky this month. We provide maps and charts for September's sky highlights, including which planets are visible and how to see them. This month, Mars will be very bright in the morning skies.

Although we live in a very small piece of the Universe, it's still where we call home and it's a very interesting place. The nine planets that make up our solar system range from very tiny rocky planets to huge gas giants featuring fascinating ring systems. Enjoy your exploration of our neighbors. Start your journey by clicking on any of the planet pictures or the planet name. Mercury
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. Its surface has many thousands of impact craters as a result of being bombarded by objects since the solar system's early days. Since Mercury has no protective atmosphere, the temperature on the surface ranges from extremely hot on the side facing the Sun to extremely cold on the side that faces away from the Sun. Venus
Venus is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. This is one of those cases where beauty is only skin deep, though, as the surface of Venus is a very unpleasant place featuring very high temperatures, winds that blow hundreds of miles per hour and an atmosphere of sulfuric acid. Venus is an example of runaway greenhouse effect on a planetary scale. Earth
They always say there's no place like home. Our home planet is a very beautiful place with the most varied surface in the entire solar system. From a distance, our planet looks like a beautiful big blue marble.

When it comes to the Universe, we are all beginners. In spite of the tremendous advances in what we know about our cosmic surroundings, we have only started to scratch the surface. As an example, the first planet outside our own solar system was discovered just a few short years ago and now we know of a least a hundred more and astronomers discover additional planets on what seems to be an almost daily basis.
If you are just getting started on your journey through the skies and are intimidated by what you don't know, join the crowd. We all feel the same way. Even the most knowledgeable scientists feel the same way most of the time. The Universe is something that presents us with at least two more questions for every answer that we uncover. That's what makes it so interesting.
In this section of the site, we will try to help you join in the journey of discovery and amazement. Become A Skilled Observer in Just 28 Days!
