Deep Impact Comet Viewing Nights at Perth Observatory
    July 4 to 9 @ 7pm
On July 4 at around 0600UT (1400WAST) a solid copper projectile will slam into Comet Tempel 1. The aim of this dramatic space mission is to find out about the internal constituents of comets.
Perth Observatory astronomers, like many other worldwide, are participating in this project and will be observing the comet intensively around this time. What will happen? Cometary scientists don't know. Join Perth Observatory astronomers after this event and view the comet through our public viewing facility telescopes, as well as getting all the latest news and images in a computer-based presentation. BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL - phone 9293 8255.
NOTE: The effects on the comet are totally unpredictable (except that no harm will come to Earth and its inhabitants) - Perth Observatory cannot guarantee that the comet will brighten spectacularly etc.
Visitors will not have access of our research telescopes as we must maximise their operational usefulness at this critical time.

Horsley, Hartlepool. “I am writing to you in order to express my opinion on the quality of your magazine. I think it is wonderfully presented and your attention to detail is fantastic.” Eddie Mc Cann, Ireland. “I really enjoy the magazine, it is really my only contact with the club. I have seen many objects that I would have missed if the magazine had not forecast them. What a shame you cannot arrange more cloudless skies!” Maire Welford, Ireland. “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your magazine. It is very informing when it comes to celestial data on all the astronomical bodies, for example, periodic comets, asteroids etc, the pictures in the magazine are always captivating especially the ones taken with the Hubble space telescope.” James Adamson, Ireland.

    What Does an Astrophysicist Do?
An astrophysicist studies the nature and behaviour of our Universe, using all the techniques of modern physical sciences. Tackling something as big as the Universe requires the combined talents of a wide range of people, each skilled in a particular area. For example, those with a mathematical bent may apply general relativity to the study of black holes or cosmology. Those who enjoy computing may specialise in computer control of telescopes or numerical analysis of astronomical data. Others may build new instruments at the forefront of technology or may use existing ones to discover new facts about stars, nebulae and galaxies, and how they form or evolve.
