    Broadening

Broadening of the astronomical knowledge of young graduate students is necessary, because several topics that are essential for graduate students are not always part of the undergraduate curriculum. Furthermore, there are differences between the undergraduate curricula in the different astronomy institutions, which are related to historical differences between areas of research carried out at the different institutions.

What is Astronomy Education Research?
Astronomy Education Research is a powerful tool in evaluating the quality of your current instruction, as well as in guiding your curriculum reform efforts. Research tools not only can offer insights into your students' opinions, but they can provide information on what your students have actually learned. The purpose of Astronomy Education Research is to introduce several research techniques (some borrowed from the physics education research community) that can help answer the questions you have about your course. The research also explores assessment and research topics generated by the tutorial participants.

    http://webphysics.iupui.edu/jitt/MiscURL.html
Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) is a teaching and learning strategy combining frequent Web-based preparatory assignments with classroom activities that promote active learning. The instructor incorporates the questions from the Web assignments into class, setting the level of discussion based on students' responses; this makes classroom activities both more efficient and more closely tuned to students' needs. Completing these preparatory assignments several times each week encourages students to keep up with the material by studying throughout the week.

The foundation hopes to provide astronomy education at two formal levels. Firstly, a certificate of amateur astronomy is an introduction to the science and hobby of astronomy, and secondly, the diploma course is a more intensive study of various aspects of astronomy and some advanced amateur techniques. The courses are divided into a number of modules. The certificate course has two modules while the diploma course consists of five separate modules. Each module may be studied separately, however completion of all modules is required to obtain the formal award.
