Astronomy Education
I am personally committed to the teaching of astronomy and planetary science, and to the public understanding of science generally. I believe that researchers ought actively to contribute to the teaching of their subject at all levels, and I have experience of teaching astronomy and planetary science at university (undergraduate and postgraduate), adult evening classes, and secondary and primary schools. I am currently teaching the Geology of the Solar System course for Birkbeck College, and two courses: Geology of Planetary Bodies and Introduction to Astrobiology , for University College London. I regard inspiring school children with the wonders of astronomy as particularly important, both as an integral part of science education and because I think important social and political consequences follow from a proper understanding of the cosmic perspective . For this reason I am a member of the The Association for Astronomy Education , under the auspices of which I have compiled a list of professional astronomers who are prepared to give school talks . I have outlined the rationale behind this initiative in ``Wanderers in space: the case for peripatetic astronomy teachers,''

For the Beginner
For the beginning sky watcher, I prepare monthly all-sky charts to help people learn the constellations. I hope soon to allow this to be run interactively. You may get my chart for September here . These charts are published monthly in the York University faculty newspaper, The Gazette. You are invited to come to the public tours at York University Observatory , which I volunteer with.
Free Planisphere:
Want to learn the sky? You may get a free planisphere here . A planisphere allows one to see what the sky will look like at any time throughout the year. They sell in bookstores for about $15 but you can make your own for about 60 cents!

About Star Class
Star Class dabbles in various bits and pieces. Originally we focused on astronomy education but when we both got full-time employment the workload of a sideline business became too much and we sadly had to wind up Star Class - Astronomy Education. Nowadays we find that Star Class lives on although we are doing different things with it. Michael is working full-time at CSIRO as a member of the web team. After hours he is working on the following projects:
  • Science Alert - website for Australian focused news about science, technology and innovation Naturally Clean - website for an Australian made range of environmental laundry products CRC Association - media contacts database
Leonie is also currently writing an astronomy column in the CSIRO's Helix magazine as well as teaching full-time. You can contact us using our online form. I know it's not the best form in the world and I promise to replace it... one day. Also, here's links to websites of some friends of ours: Here's a live test of a PayPal Donation button. It's sort of here as a test but it is real so if you just so happen to want to part with some of your money feel free to "donate" some money to me. I won't say no. In fact, I'm confident I'll be quite thankful!

Planetarian , September 1995 Planetarians are part of a worldwide network of astronomy educators-"kindred spirits" in the communication of astronomy. This network includes planetarians in other countries, and also educators and astronomers (both professional and amateur) working in other settings but sharing the same goals. This article is written from my perspective as president of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Commission on the Teaching of Astronomy.
Introduction
Why, then, is astronomy so often the "poor cousin" in the school science curriculum? The same problems and issues seem to occur all over the world: (i) few teachers, especially at the elementary level, have any training in astronomy; (ii) teachers think that astronomy must be technical and mathematical, and requires elaborate teaching equipment; (iii) simple, inexpensive, "hands-on" activities are needed-preferably ones which get around the problem that "the stars come out at night, the students don't; (iv) inappropriate teaching techniques fail to overcome students' ingrained misconceptions about physical and astronomical phenomena; (v) many students (especially girls) are turned off science at an early age; (vi) scientific illiteracy is widespread among students and the public.
Current Developments in the US
The results of these efforts will soon be available to astronomy educators around the world. In order to facilitate this process, to co-ordinate the next phase of development of astronomy education, and to ensure that present efforts meet the needs of all students, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific is holding a major symposium on astronomy education on June 24-25, 1995 at the University of Maryland. The proceedings of this conference should be the definitive guide to astronomy education in the US.

Aims and Means Astronomy is the oldest of all sciences. It is also pluridisciplinar; not only do its most recent developments use all the disciplines of physics, but it also has links with chemistry, biology and the Earth sciences. Furthermore, the cultural and philosophical role of Astronomy is undisputed.
