Data Archives
Once your data is in a usable format, you will want to store the data in a place where astronomers from all over the world can access it. Before data is made public, it may go through a "proprietary phase." This is a period of time during which only the team of scientists who requested the observation will have access to the data. The proprietary phase typically lasts a year (though this varies by satellite ), after which the data is available to any interested scientist. During both the proprietary and public phases, the data is stored in one central location, enabling scientists from around the globe to access the data at any time. Proprietary data is password-protected until it becomes public. Goddard's High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center ( HEASARC ) currently archives data from 20 satellites covering 30 years of observations.
Why create an archive?
The primary purpose for an archive is to make data easily available to as many interested people as possible. An astronomical archive serves much the same purpose as a family album or vacation scrapbook. During a family vacation, you likely take many pictures and collect brochures and postcards from the sites you visited. After the vacation you collect these pictures, postcards and brochures in a scrapbook. The scrapbooks make it easy for you to look back through the pictures and to share your photos and vacation memories with friends and family.

F or 25 years, the ADC was a key center for published astronomy data, catalogs, and journal tables. The ADC made these data sets computer readable and developed new methods, tools, and techniques for their preparation and use. The ADC represented the U.S. in exchanging data and collaborating on techniques and standards with data centers in other countries. Important Notice to ADC Users: NASA has determined that ADC services sufficiently overlap those provided by CDS and others to allow termination of the ADC. Effective October 1 2002, NASA is directing ADC users to the sites below that provide similar services. Maintenance and updating of the ADC's Web site and services will be discontinued. Abstract:
The European HST science data archive has been combined with the VLT science data archive. Beyond the capability to retrieve past observations the archive facility offers ``added value products'', such as re-calibration using reference data and procedures which were not available at the time of the original observations. At the same time the archive facilty will be optimised for knowledge discovery through data mining. During the data ingest procedure features and parameters which characterize the data will be extracted and made available in a rapid-access data base. Related information from other data bases and catalogues, and from the astronomical literature will be merged into the data base. In this manner previously unknown and unsuspected correlations can be discovered.

1st High Energy Astrophysics Observatory ( HEAO 1. GSFC. NASA )
The first of NASA's three High Energy Astronomy Observatories, HEAO 1 was launched aboard an Atlas Centaur rocket on 12 August 1977 and operated until 9 January 1979. During that time, it scanned the X-ray sky almost three times over 0.2 keV - 10 MeV, provided nearly constant monitoring of X-ray sources near the ecliptic poles, as well as more detailed studies of a number of objects through pointed observations.
2nd High Energy Astrophysics Observatory ( HEAO 2, renamed Einstein. GSFC. NASA )
The second High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO-B) was launched into an approximate 100-min low Earth orbit on 13 November 1978. Renamed the Einstein Observatory, it operated (with one significant interruption) until April 1981 and made over 5,000 targeted observations.
ADS Einstein Archive Service ( Einstein )
This service provides query and retrieval capability for the Einstein X-ray Observatory's processed data archive. The archive includes about 5000 X-ray observations (in astronomical standard FITS format) taken between 1978 and 1981.
Advanced Stars: a Tool for Relating Informations and Data ( ASTRID )
ASTRID is a data base of stars in an advanced evolutionary stage, peculiarly of red giants, AGB and post-AGB variables. The database gathers in the same tool observational data with comments and results from models.

Abstract:
The Space Telescope European Coordinating Facility and the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre have started a project aimed at augmenting the way an astronomer can query the Hubble Space Telescope science archive. Today the HST archive contains more than 70,000 WFPC2 exposures. We are preparing an automatic pipeline that will extract several parameters from those images. A list of all the sources seen by WFPC2, along with photometrical, morphological and astrometric measurements of both the detected astronomical sources and of the background will be extracted. Astronomers will make use of such a database to query the archive in a more sophisticated and scientific manner, that is in the way they think, not in the way the archive is built.

SCIENTIFIC DATA RECEIVED FROM SATELLITES IS HIGHLY VALUABLE for both scientists and space engineers. To serve the entire scientific community, VILSPA mantains an archive of all scientific data obtained from completed and ongoing missions. This information is made available to the scientific community for continuing research purposes.
The XMM-Newton Observatory collects data in the soft X-ray portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The XMM-Newton Science Archive is about to be publicly released. Intended date is April 2002.
The Infrared Space Observatory was the very first space observatory to collect data in the infrared part of the spectrum.
The ISO Archive holds the results of over 26000 scientific observations performed during 2.5 years of operation.
IUE
was the first space observatory totally dedicated to ultraviolet astronomy. VILSPA hosted Centers for IUE spacecraft Control, Science Operations, Data processing and Data Distribution.
The huge amount of data obtained during its 17-year lifetime has been competely re-extracted into the IUE Newly Extracted Spectra (INES) , maintained by LAEFF Astroweb is a compilation of resource records offered by VILSPA as a free service to the scientific community. Fields of interest include Astronomy, Astrophysics and related natural sciences. Maintainers are organized under the
