ATNF Data Access Policy
Data obtained from the ATNF facilities is made available to other users on request 18 months after the date of observations, unless a special case for extended proprietary rights is accepted by the Director or Time Allocation Committee. The ATNF Director may override the release of data at his discretion.
Australia Telescope Archive Databases
Information from the Australia Telescope Compact Array, Parkes Radiotelescope, Mopra Radiotelescope and the Long Baseline and VLBI arrays is available in several archive databases:
Target of Opportunity and NAPA data release
Results from ToO or NAPA observations should be made publicly available as soon as possible via an appropriate international astronomy service (e.g. IAU circular, Astronomers Telegram, Gamma Ray Burst Coordinated Network (GCN). The results should be made public in time for other groups to follow up the same event.

Space Science Data Archives
One of the Science Mission Directorate's fundamental principles for science operations is to ensure vigorous and timely interpretation of mission data. Acquired data is made publicly available as soon as possible after scientific validation, along with associated tools . Other than in exceptional cases, data must be released within 6 months of acquisition and validation. In addition, Principal Investigators are required to publish their results in peer-reviewed literature. All data are archived by NASA in publicly accessible data archives for the long-term use of the science community and the public. The Curator for Astromaterials Samples protects, preserves, and distributes for study samples from the Moon, Mars, and interplanetary space The Space Science Data Operations Office oversees:

LRRP A Proposal to develop Data Mining at CADC David Schade National Research Council
Introduction
The role of data archives in astronomical research is growing very quickly in parallel with the contents in those archives. The Canadian Astronomy Data Centre ( CFHT MEGACAM surveys, our goal is to develop general tools-operating on all of our resident archives and across archive boundaries-for the scientific exploitation of very large databases (data mining). The direct costs of this proposal are for 2 astronomers and 1.5 computer scientists for 3 year terms as well as substantial hardware upgrades. These direct costs amount to $1.5 million. Other costs that HIA is able to bear amount to $0.4 million and include existing staff and support and indirect costs to HIA of housing and supporting the proposed new staff. This represents an estimate of the required level of new funding that is needed to maintain the CADC in a leadership role in the international archiving community.
The Outlook for Astronomical Data Archiving
This growth in archive facilities and the quantity of data that they contain will become more and more dramatic in the next decade due to new survey projects (the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the CFHT MEGACAM survey are only a few examples) and due to the growing awareness that archiving is an important component of the output of both ground-based (Gemini, VLT) and space-based (HST, NGST, FUSE) observatories.

Transformations in Astronomy Research Due to the Internet David Schade, Astronomer
Canadian Astronomy Data Centre Going from medicine to astronomy is in a sense going from body to soul because, in fact, the study of the universe is something that's deep in our soul. We really need to understand how the universe we observe came to be in the first placehow it came to evolve from its early state to the state that we see it in today. I'm with the National Research Council of Canada, which is part of the federal government, and I work with Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC), which is part of the Hertzburg Institute of Astrophysics. The mandate the federal government gave to the CADC is to provide services to the research community that help them to do better research and to develop facilities that they don't have the capabilities to develop themselves. So we try and develop what are nowadays mostly web-based tools that are then distributed to university researchers. The Canadian Astronomy Data Centre is a very small group. There are really only about four or five of us, depending on if you count temporary and contract workers. It was founded in 1986, and it has grown from three to about four or five in that decade and really made great advances in the field of what we call data archiving. We think of data archiving in very broad terms; it involves data processing, data cataloging, data distribution, and a lot of other things.

    50. What Do The 1990s Hold For Astronomy And Astrophysics?
Research using astronomical data archives can thus be very broadly based. 7.Could you summarize the panel s recommendations in a brief overview?
    http://access.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Archive/backissues/92.2/92.2.1990.html
What do the 1990s hold for astronomy and astrophysics?
Editor's Note: Every 10 years the National Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council charter a committee to survey and prioritize the most important programs in astronomy and astrophysics for the next decade. The committee to study the 1990s was chaired by John N. Bahcall of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, and its report was entitled The Decade of Discovery. NCSA Director Larry Smarr chaired the 26-member Panel on Astronomical Computing and co-authored a journal article with William Press, professor of astronomy and physics at Harvard, on the panel report of the Bahcall Committee (Computers in Physics, March-April 1991). The following questions, compiled by Fran Bond, access editor, and answered by Smarr and NCSA Research Associate Radha Nandkumar, summarize the panel report and are based on the Computers in Physics article.
    1. What major trends do you see developing in the 1990s for astronomy and astrophysics?
The High Performance Computing and Communications Program, the national multiagency cross-disciplinary initiative, will pose a new context in which scientific research will be carried out. Astronomical scienceby virtue of its intrinsic data and computation-intensive nature, its manageable size as a discipline, and its past experience and future opportunitystands poised to be the cutting-edge application discipline in a number of major aspects of a national program.

IRSA provides software and Internet services to facilitate astronomical discoveries, support the production of new astronomical data products, and to plan future observations utilizing the data archives from infrared astrophysics missions supported at IPAC. IRSA is a component of NASA's distributed Space Science Data Services, leveraging resources at other NASA centers and elsewhere to enable new functionality, while at the same time supporting and collaborating with these remote archive systems. NED : The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database is a comprehensive and multi-faceted archive of data for over 3 million extragalactic objects. It is built around a master list of objects with extensive name cross-identifications, accurate positions, and basic photometric data. Bibliographic references relevant to individual objects have been compiled, and abstracts of extragalactic interest are kept on line. Detailed and referenced photometry, position, and redshift data, have been taken from large compilations and from the literature. Data and references are being continually updated, with revised versions being put on-line every few months. : The Two Micron All-Sky Survey archive provides on-line, ftp and DVD-ROM access to the 2MASS Catalogs and Atlas Images, and to the 2MASS Point Source Catalogs.
