'... I think this is likely to change astronomy as we know it.'
The Internet brings its users the world on line. Astronomers from 17 research institutions have announced that they're starting an ambitious new project to put the universe on line. The National Virtual Observatory ( NVO ), headed by astronomer Alex Szalay of Johns Hopkins University and computer scientist Paul Messina of Caltech, will unite the astronomical databases of many earthbound and orbital observatories, taking advantage of the latest computer technology and data storage and analysis techniques. The goal is to maximize the potential for new scientific insights from the data by making them available in an accessible, seamlessly unified form to professional researchers, amateur astronomers, and students. The new project is funded by a five-year, $10 million Information Technology Research grant from the National Science Foundation. Organizers characterize their goal as "building the framework" for the National Virtual Observatory.

The UK Astronomical Data Centre
Welcome to the home page of the UK Astronomy Data Centre (formerly RGO Astronomy Data Centre). The Data Centre is part of the Cambridge Astronomy Survey Unit in the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, and houses a good selection of data from the UK's ground based telescopes as well as a number of catalogues. The user interfaces for the catalogues presented here are all very similar, so once you've queried one catalogue then all of the rest should be pretty much the same. The interface owes much to software developed at the CADC (Canadian Astronomy Data Centre) and we gratefully acknowledge our debt to them in allowing us to adapt their software to our needs. We currently serve the following archives and catalogues.
VizieR service
The ADC operates a mirror of the VizieR service VizieR is a "catalogue of catalogues" or "data-set federation". It allows users to browse lists and descriptions of available catalogues and to submit a query, typically by object name or position, on many catalogues at once.

Abstract:
This paper describes the processing procedures developed to generate, store and display the preview data for the HST and CFHT data archives. It will also describe how the preview system has been extended to other astronomy catalogs.
Introduction
It became apparent during the development of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive at the Canadian Astronomy Data Center (CADC) and the Space Telescope-European Coordinating Facility (ST-ECF), that the archive would be more useful and efficient if archive users could view the archive data interactively. If archive users could view the image and spectral data before making requests for data, requests for unusable data would be reduced, and requests for useful data would be increased. Since the HST archive consists of approximately 320 Gigabytes of public data, of which approximately 50 Gigabytes is scientifically useful, it is not practical to store the original data on line or transmit it over the Internet fast enough to be usable interactively. The CADC and ST-ECF have designed a system which compresses data for selected scientifically useful datasets and stores the compressed preview data in a relational database system. We also have extended the STARCAT archive interface to allow users to retrieve and preview any dataset in the preview database. Since the successful creation of the HST preview database, the CADC and ECF have generated preview data for various other archives and catalogs.

A book published by Kluwer Acad. Publ. (Sept.95)
The ability of storing, managing, and giving access to a huge quantity of data, and the associated documents, is one of the major challenges of our science (and of natural sciences in general) for the next decade. At the same time, the growing complexity of data systems, implies a change of concepts. The scientist has not only to manipulate data, but also information. Recent developments of the World-Wide Web bring interesting answers to these problems. The book presents a wide selection of databases, archives, data centers, and information systems in astronomy. Clear and up-to-date descriptions are included, together with their scientific context and motivations. This on-line complement of the book includes summary descriptions of the data systems presented in the printed version (as well as those presented in the earlier book ), together with the complete access pointers (these will be kept up-to-date) and, when available, ready-to-use hyperlinks to the original data systems (either WWW, ftp or telnet services). What is an Astronomical Data Model?
A. Farris and R. J. Allen
Space Telescope Science Institute, 3700 San Martin Dr., Baltimore, MD 21218
Abstract:
Using techniques from semantic data modeling and object-oriented data modeling, an astronomical data model is identified as a kind of conceptual analysis. The general characteristics of such a model are presented, as well as its relationship to computer-based data structures and the FITS standard for transporting data. The effective use of data models in relation to instrument specific data, in conjunction with data archives, and in fundamental areas of the data analysis is discussed.
Origins of the Concept of a Data Model
The basic concept of a data model originated within the database community as the logical model of an integrated database management system (DBMS). The early DBMSs employed hierarchical, network, and relational data models that were directly implemented by the DBMS software. The entity-relationship model was introduced as a generalization of these previous models and is a more intuitive approach to modeling data relationships. It is widely used as a conceptual tool for relational database design (Batini 1992). Semantic data modeling is an outgrowth of the entity-relationship model in which additional structures are employed to portray more complex data relationships. Object-oriented modeling techniques (Booch 1994) are closely related to semantic data modeling, the major difference being that the object-oriented techniques add behavior to characterize entities rather than being restricted to data attributes.
