SOUTH FLORIDA AMATEUR ASTRONOMER GROUPS

Amateur astronomer associations offer stellar evenings for South Florida families
There's so much more to the night sky than meets the eye, and thanks to the several amateur astronomy associations here, South Florida families can see it all for free. Stars, planets and comets - indeed, entire galaxies - are revealed in all their radiant splendor, through the high-tech telescopes provided by these local astronomers, who are willing to share their passion for this hobby - and their telescopes - with anyone interested in attending their star parties.
All you need to do to experience the heavens is show up at one of the public viewing events set up by these avocational stargazers. They provide the rest, including in some instances, slide shows and presentations, constellation facts and even educational computer games to help teach kids and grownups about the vastness of the universe and the impact of space objects, such as asteroids, on our planet. This is an evening of education, discovery and fun that families with children almost any age will enjoy.
A public viewing event generally begins with amateur astronomer group members setting up their personal telescopes in parking lots of select local parks, which they use as their night sky observation area for the evening. As guests arrive, members freely share their telescopes - a rather generous offering considering the costliness of some of this equipment - as well as their knowledge, explaining how to operate the equipment and pointing out the sights of the cosmos.

  • I would like to enrol in the Master, Graduate Diploma, or Graduate Certificate*, but I don't have a tertiary qualification.

  • If you can demonstrate equivalent prior experience in astronomy we may consider waiving that requirement. In order to enrol in the SAO Masters, you must have the equivalent of a prior degree, so this means you will have to work your way through the SAO nested program. Australian students without a tertiary qualification must first complete the Graduate Certificate (or the equivalent of 4 SAO units) with a credit average before they can transfer into the Graduate Diploma or Master degrees. Students from outside of Australia without a tertiary qualification must first complete two SAO units as individual-unit enrolments with credit grades. They can then transfer into the Graduate Diploma (with exemptions for the two units already completed) and after successfully completing 8 SAO units can transfer into the Masters if they wish. Note that some of the advanced units do assume introductory tertiary level mathematics. For full details of entry requirements, follow this link Note that the Graduate Certificate is available to Australian residents only.

A Review of the Star*s Family Products
    A. Heck
    Abstract:
The current situation of the Star*s Family is reviewed, as it is a growing line of products: directories, dictionaries, databases, data sets, etc., on astronomy, space sciences, and related fields and organizations of the world.
    Generalities
Since more than fifteen years now, we have been compiling directories of organizations involved in astronomy, space sciences and related fields. More recently, we entered the parallel compilation of a dictionary of abbreviations, acronyms, contractions and symbols appearing in the same fields. Therefore the Star*s Family line of products is structured essentially around two sets of master files: StarGuides, a directory of astronomy, space sciences, and related organizations of the world, and StarBriefs, a dictionary of abbreviations, acronyms, contractions, and symbols in astronomy, space sciences, and related fields. These lists are made available in various ways with the aim of providing flexible yellow-page services. The products are briefly presented below.

    Introduction
Aster, Agrupació Astronòmica de Barcelona (Astronomical Association of Barcelona) is a non-profit private society, which objective is gathering every astronomy lover in Barcelona and Catalonia. Both beginners and experts can become Aster members, the only requirement being to share our enthusiasm for astronomy. Aster efforts are aimed to spread out the science of astronomy as well as encouraging for sky observation. Furthermore, Aster members take advantage of support for their astronomical activities, either by facilitating information or by suppliying scientific instrumental.
    History
Aster was created in 1948 by a group of young catalan astronomy lovers, whose leader, Ernest Guille i Moliné, was the first president. During the fifties, Aster carried out significant efforts to popularize astronomy in Catalonia, as well as to encourage for astronomical observation. It is important to point out that Aster's observatory was inaugurated in 1953 . I is placed on the roof of the association headquarters. Between 1956 and 1958, during the International Geophysical Year, Aster members payed special attention to the daily observation and astrophotography of the Sun. This work was carried out in collaboration with other worlwide amateur and professional astronomy groups. At the end of the fifties Aster was recognized by distinguished astronomers as a prestigious astronomical association.
