Chair's Report
I never have to worry about finding something to write about in these monthly reports. It seems that every month we have another new HAA celebrity! This past month, Aaron Simpson was interviewed by TV Ontario for a special report on amateur astronomers. The show was aired on TVO's Studio 2, April 20th. I was quite impressed with the confidence Aaron displayed during his appearance. He even managed to squeeze in a plug for the Hamilton Amateur Junior Astronomers. Well done, Aaron! By the way, have you decided on a name for that planet, yet? Meanwhile, Denise Kaisler's report on the newly discovered planets (sorry, Aaron, not yours!) appeared in the recent issue of SkyNews. Congratulations, Denise! Two years ago, we corralled three young McMaster University undergrads into joining our council: Raechel Carson, Nina Snaith and Rosa Assalone. We have come to refer to them collectively as "the girls". As you know from reading your newsletter or attending our meetings, "the girls" have become invaluable council members. Raechel Carson has been marvelous as our junior group co-ordinator. Nina Snaith has provided the most ingenious (and entertaining) demonstrations at our HAJA meetings as well as doing a stellar job of keeping council minutes. Rosa Assalone has quietly and efficiently maintained membership lists, distributed newsletters, published the junior group's newsletter and helped out at the HAJA meetings whenever she was needed. Most importantly, "the girls" have been great fun to work with!

Students will understand the following: Ancient people showed significant skills in developing calendars based on celestial movements. Contemporary people all over the world continue to be fascinated with astronomy. Materials Access to local observatories and astronomical equipment would be helpful but is not necessary for this observation-and-recording project. Internet access and e-mail account for teacher or class Procedures To help students appreciate the skills of the ancient Anasazi people of the Southwest in watching the stars and simultaneously to highlight the benefits of up-to-date electronic communication, organize a cooperative sky-gazing project with teachers and students in other parts of the country and in other parts of the world. This project should not depend on telescopes or other high-tech paraphernalia. Your first step is to locate teachers and classes willing to participate with you in an astronomy project over the course of a few months. How Clear was your Sky? Your Observations
The project on light pollution was one of the Collaborative Projects for Astronomy On-Line . A preliminary report has been given by ESO astronomers Richard West and Christian Drouet-d'Aubigny - thank you very much! In the meantime I got the time to take a closer look to the data: Unfortunately the weather during the Astronomy On-Line project was extremely bad in Europe. Till now it was not possible to see Ursa Minor here in Osnabräck!!! And then the moon was waxing and brightening the evening sky so that the limiting magnitude got worse. Nevertheless 25 people sent their reports - many thanks to them all - all are cited below
Some small results:
  • At one city the limiting magnitude can vary much, e.g. in Sofia, Bulgaria, or Giarre, Italy. Reasons might be:
    • Observers with differing observing experience: a more experienced observer might see fainter stars, while a beginner might even misidentify the stars. However it is fascinating to have a limiting magnitude of 5.0 or even 6.3 at a capital!
    • Observers might have been not enough dark adapted, e.g. for about 15 minutes.

Scott Mair When you become a new member of the RASC - Victoria Centre’s Council the other council members don’t waste anytime putting you to work. You may not know what you’re doing, but it’s into the ‘deep end’ you go.
And so it was for me – the first monthly meeting has been hosted, the first council meeting has been scheduled and now I’m charged with penning the President’s Message without really knowing what I’m talking about (my friends will confirm that this is my usual state of affairs).
While I was listening to Doug Johnstone’s excellent talk on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope at our December meeting I kept thinking about what a remarkable thing it was to have a professional astronomer talking about his cutting edge research with the largest sub-millimetre telescope in the world at the meeting of our little astronomy club in sleepy Victoria.
Amazingly, this is not an unusual thing for our Centre: next month JJ Kavelaars, one of the premier moon hunters on the planet, will be our speaker; last month Sara Ellison gave us the inside scoop about working the European Southern Observatory’s four, 8 metre telescopes and Jon Willis shared his work on the site selection process for ALMA, which will revolutionize radio astronomy in the decades ahead; the previous month Jaymie Matthews shared the success of Canada’s ‘humble telescope’, MOST, with RASC members before the rest of Victoria.
