(SPACE.com) After a few close calls, astronomers have finally obtained the first photograph of a planet beyond our solar system, SPACE.com has learned. And this time they say they're sure. Though some doubt lingers about the mass of the object. The planet is thought to be one to two times as massive as Jupiter, according to the scientists who imaged it. It orbits a star similar to a young version of our Sun. The star, GQ Lupi, has been observed by a team of European astronomers since 1999. They have made three images using the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile. The Hubble Space Telescope and the Japanese Subaru Telescope each contributed an image, too. "The detection of the faint object near the bright star is certain," Neuhaeuser told SPACE.com on Friday.

ASTROFEST 2000, 2-12-2000, MAIN LIBRARY LOS ANGELES
2nd year and still going strong, come along and enjoy an astronomy filled day starting at 8:00am till 5:00pm. Last year we Sidewalk Astronomers built a 10" telescope,(photos below)in about 8 hours, and again this year we will do the same. Numerous lectures on astronomy will be held inside the library along with our very own John Dobson giving a cosmologicaly enlightening discussion. Your more than welcome to come along and join in with the building of the telescope or just come along and watch and learn. Any questions about this event call Dana Eklund at 323-263-6902
The Sidewalk Astronomers build another telescope, this time for the Los Angeles Astro Fest 1999, at the Main Library in downtown. Bob, John and Jerry lend a hand building a 10" dobsonian. It was completed in under 8 hours and used that evening on the Moon.
The Sidewalk Astronomers are proud of their 30 years of public service. The Sidewalk Astronomers are not your typical astronomy group. We prefer to hang out on street corners and show strangers the Moon, or Jupiter and other celestial objects. A lot of people ask me when is the next dark sky party, which we try to have monthly, but. We are the SIDEWALK Astronomers, and I have yet to have seen a sidewalk, with a passing by crowd, up on top of a mountain. Dark sky parties are fun, but is not our goal. Our goal is to have that 7 year old, gaze through the eyepiece, and with amazement ask questions. For that 7 year old, to go to bed dreaming of how all this got to be so fantastic. We prefer to create thinkers, dreamers, our future. It's that simple we are the

Introduction
"A professional research astronomer does not merely appreciate the beauty and wonder of the objects in the sky. This is the daily challenge - to come to some sort of understanding of the basic underlying physics that gave rise to the universe and the objects in it. It is this challenge and the satisfaction gained by solving these puzzles that drew me to astronomy."
A New Universe to Discover
W hen astronomer James Scotti was asked to photograph a newly discovered comet with the University of Arizona's 36-inch telescope, he was not prepared for the image that appeared on his computer screen. What he saw was not one comet but a chain of comets that looked like a string of pearls. "I was struck by the unique appearance of a train of individual [comet] nuclei all lined up in a row," Said Dr. Scotti. "I had never before seen such a unique image in a comet." In fact, nothing like it had been seen by other astronomers either. The pearls were the remnant of a comet that had come too close to Jupiter and broke into at least 21 fragments. Even more extraordinary, 18 months later these comet fragments, known collectively as Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, would collide with Jupiter, providing astronomers the opportunity to study such an event for the first time!

http://www.transitsearch.org/index.htm
news candidates candidates faq observing procedures ... contact transitsearch.org Over the past ten years, over 150 extrasolar planets have been discovered orbiting nearby solar-like stars, and the recent discoveries of transiting "hot Jupiter" type planets such as HD 209458 b, OGLE TR56-b, and TrES-1 have added an additional element of excitement to the quest for alien solar systems. Furthermore, the past several years have seen the introduction of highly affordable small telescopes equipped with sensitive CCD detectors. A large number of amateur astronomers and small colleges own observatories which, when properly configured, are capable of reliably detecting the periodic dimming that occurs when a close-in giant planet passes in front of its parent star as seen from Earth. This technique has been used by amateurs worldwide to detect the planetary transits of HD 209458 and TrES-1 Transitsearch.org is a cooperative observational effort designed to allow experienced amateur astronomers and small college observatories to discover transiting extrasolar planets. In order to utilize the advantages of a network of small telescopes most effectively, our strategy is to observe known planet-bearing stars at the dates and times when transits are expected to occur. At present, the majority of confirmed extrasolar planets have been discovered using the Doppler radial velocity technique (see
