Eric Buehrens is; Planning and Building an Amateur
Roll-Off Roof Observatory Eric Buehrens has been an amateur astronomer since he was a teenager and is now - a few decades later - finally building the observatory that he's always wanted. He's got a dark-sky site in the Hudson Valley and his intention is to build something that he can use now for visual observing but will allow for future growth in his observing program, including imaging and eventually remote operation. He'll talk about how he made design decisions, how to build something like this when you've never built much of anything, and share a few suggestions about mistakes you might like to avoid if you're contemplating a similar project. When he's not building or observing, Eric works as an administrator for Harvard. He's just left his position as Executive Dean for Administration for Harvard Medical School to assume a new position as Deputy Provost for Administration, in which he will be involved in planning new science ventures for Harvard's campus developments in Allston.

Owatonna Clear Dark Sky Report
Comet Temple 1
July 4, 2005 Special Event
I made short plans to go to the viewing site about an hour before the NASA Deep Impact project was to strike comet Temple 1 at 12:52 July 4, 2005 (CST). The highway approaching the site was clear except for some low pockets of fog. The fog also covered the viewing site and obstructed the view of Spica; making any comet watching our of the picture. Several internet sites had live feeds of the impact so that's what we saw-not too bad, but I'd rather have seen it in person. The horizon was totally fogged. Straight overhead was clear.

Our coolest offering for our Astronomy section is our XPLORE Tour of Mt. Hamilton and Lick Observatory. We are proud be recognized for it as Astronomy site of the day for October 17, 1996. If you came here via our home page, you've probably seen it already. If you haven't seen it, then click the XPLORE icon now and embark on the journey!
Star Parties
If you have never attended an astronomy club star party, you must do so at least once. You do not need a telescope. Astronomy clubs welcome visitors and are always pleased to show off the night sky to people who drop in.
The night sky from a hilltop away from city lights is a sight to behold. It is great even without a telescope, with the Milky Way stretching across the sky and occasional shooting stars going by. The sights through amateur telescopes are even more exciting. Things are not as bright and colorful as in magazine pictures, and this sometimes disappoints newcomers.
However, sights through a telescope are exciting because you know you are seeing the actual light from the distant objects. The first time you see the actual light from a spiral galaxy thousands of light years away, you will know what I mean. Why don't you look up an astronomy club in your area and go to one of their events. It will be a night to remember.
Michael has taken a great interest in astronomy and has compiled some of his thoughts on learning about it
Internet Resources

There is an enormous wealth of space and astronomy resources on the Internet. With so much available, we will not build a large FTP library of our own. Instead, we provide just a few fun files in our library and provide Web links to the great collection of Internet resources.

Welcome to our website!
The Naperville Astronomical Association is a non-profit astronomy club with a membership of over two-hundred individuals and families, mainly from the southwest Chicagoland (Illinois, USA) area. What we share is an interest in exploring the universe beyond our planet, both with our eyes and our minds. What we have found is that our enjoyment of our hobby can be enhanced when we share it with others; the young with the old, the beginner with the advanced amateur and the professional.
We hope that the information to be found on pages of this site helps you to enjoy astronomy, too!

Date Comments 26 July 2005 I've managed to snap an image of Pluto , and clearly identify in the star field using a combination of Astrometrica and TheSky6. This is quite an achievement for me as it's been somewhat of a hard slog to get all the applications working nicely, the CCD and telescope working nicely, etc to be able to use Astrometrica effectively. I'm very happy with the results now. 26th Mar 2005 Today (26th March 2005) there was an Occultation of Jupiter by The Moon. I have an initial image from the event in the planets gallery and will add more in coming days. 25th Jan 2005 New images of comet C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) are uploaded to the comet gallery 27 Dec 2004 I have updated my equipment page 27 Dec 2004 I have taken many images of the Milky Way , but a new image (taken back in October) that includes the glow of twilight is quite different. The extremely wide field of view and horizon with twilight glow works quite well compared to the normal star field. 27 Dec 2004 Three new startrail images are in the misc and startrail galleries. They centre around the Southern Celestial Pole and include the LMC and SMC.
