Though linked to the realist traditions of Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, and Edward Hopper, Wyeth often transcends literal transcription to move into the realm of memory and imagination, inviting viewers into a strange and wondrous world. In Wyeth’s work, objects transform metaphorically into portraits of friends, family, and even the artist himself. The exhibition explores how Wyeth invests these objects with meaning, and how he will sometimes begin with figure subjects and then gradually paint people out of the picture, leaving the objects to tell the stories themselves.

The retrospective includes more than 100 works, among them tempera paintings and watercolors from the 1930s to the present. As detailed in the museum’s official release, the exhibition explores "in depth Wyeth’s frequently unadorned and often haunting images - ranging from natural forms like rocks and trees and humble containers such as buckets, to stark rooms, windows with curtains lifted in the breeze, bare hills, and people lost in deep introspection. The works, many of which draw upon his boyhood experiences in and lifelong affection for the Brandywine Valley near Philadelphia and on the coast of Maine, are lent from public and private collections across the country and from the private collection of Andrew and Betsy Wyeth."

Andrew Wyeth At 18 I began painting steadily fulltime and at age 20 had my first New York show at the Macbeth Gallery. Andrew Wyeth I can't work completely out of my imagination. I must put my foot in a bit of truth; and then I can fly free. Andrew Wyeth I don't really have studios. I wander around around people's attics, out in fields, in cellars, anyplace I find that invites me. Andrew Wyeth I dream a lot. I do more painting when I'm not painting. It's in the subconscious. Andrew Wyeth I love to study the many things that grow below the corn stalks and bring them back to the studio to study the color. If one could only catch that true color of nature - the very thought of it drives me mad. Andrew Wyeth I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape - the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn't show.

    http://www.andrewwyeth.com
M IT hosted the first Boston area one-man show of paintings by Andrew Wyeth in the Hayden Gallery at MIT in 1960. The exhibit brought together forty works of art (18 tempera paintings, 21 watercolors, and one pencil drawing), which were on view from November 9 through December 4. The Institute planned a cocktail party for the artist and his wife for the evening before the official opening, but Wyeth declined the invitation, as the letter reproduced here indicates. His reply to Catherine Stratton, wife of MIT president Julius Stratton, carefully explained his position: Read the entire letter I sincerely feel that it is much wiser for the paintings to stand on their own merit and the artist's presence confuses the issue. I do hope you will understand the above statement which probably sounds odd indeed. Andrew Wyeth, born in 1917, was largely home-schooled and trained in art by N. C. Wyeth, his father, who was also a famous artist. He worked primarily in watercolor and egg tempera in a realist style, drawing his subjects from the landscapes and inhabitants of rural areas in Pennsylvania and Maine. Trodden Weed , his 1951 tempera of boots tramping across a hardened field in winter, was one of the paintings exhibited at MIT in 1960 and remains one of the artist's most enduring images. He has described the painting as a “self-portrait.”

    Wyeth's Influence
It’s safe to say that Andrew Wyeth is one of America’s treasures. His artwork and impact on the history of art rank the Chadds Ford, PA artist with other esteemed American masters such as Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, and Edward Hopper.
Wyeth’s art has inspired numerous contemporary artists to remain committed to the American realist movement. Wyeth’s influence in the work of some of today’s most important contemporary artists from Jamie Wyeth to Bo Bartlett is obvious. In addition, Wyeth’s artwork has captured the scholarly interest of curators and art historians on the international stage as he aptly and lovingly documents the American scene.
    Family Ties
Born in 1917, Andrew Wyeth’s family background reflects on the art notion of the “art gene”. This is a somewhat well known belief within art circles that fine art talent actually runs in families. Andrew Wyeth’s father, who suffered an untimely death, was famed American illustrator, N.C. Wyeth. And Andrew Wyeth’s son, Jamie, is a highly accomplished and revered figure in contemporary American painting circles. Of course, the Wyeth story is also told through works of art on display in museums and collections worldwide.
Following the great success of the popular exhibition of Wyeth’s tempera paintings, watercolors, and drawings entitled

    59. Haber's Art Reviews: Andrew Wyeth And Arthur Dove At The Whitney
Is American art provincial? Review by John Haber of andrew wyeth, Arthur Dove, and a remodeled Whitney Museum.
    http://www.haberarts.com/province.htm
    Provincetown
    John Haber
    in New York City
    Andrew Wyeth: Unknown Terrain
    Arthur Dove
The Whitney Museum of American Art has a problem. I mean its name: it is stuck with all this American art. How provincial! Right now, the Whitney does not seem to mind a bit. In fact, it wallows in provincialism, or at least the original provinces. This spring it showed Arthur Dove , an early modernist who left for New England as if to hide from Cubism. And now its summer extravaganza features Andrew Wyeth's landscapes , along with a rehanging of the permanent collection so conservative that even Wyeth might like it. Has American art no way out of the back woods? Maybe, I shall argue, the Whitney can use a better sense of time and place. I might as well start with the present: what could be tricky about showcasing American art?
    Bunkering down
America definitely does not face a shortage of artists. Try to support yourself painting, assuming you can find affordable studio space even in Brooklyn. New York has not lost its global influence either. Minimalism and Pop Art sell better abroad, and the Guggenheim Museum has paved over more of the world than Dow Chemical during the Vietnam War. Besides, Postmodernism really makes creative sense only as the perpetual death knoll of good old American Modernism and the American century Nothing fails like success, though, including American culture. It walks like world art and talks like world art, so maybe it is a duck, and the embarrassing rubber kind, too. That leaves the Whitney with a tough choice.
