Biography of Andrew Wyeth
Brief biography of painter Andrew Wyeth.
It seems everywhere you look there is an Andrew Wyeth exhibit, dedication, best selling book or interview. It also seems everyone knows of at least one or two of his pieces either by sight or title of the work. There is a very good reason for this. Andrew Wyeth is one of the most celebrated living artists in history. Several galleries and museums, including the National Gallery of Art, display his work when prior to this they had never featured the work of a living artist. Andrew Wyeth’s ability to create unmistakably realistic images set to a fictional tone both impressed and enraged critics. During his sixty-year career, his work gradually began an evolution from realism to surrealistic expressionism to a combination of both. This is the primary reason for the feelings of rage held by these critics. They felt if he were to be taken seriously as an artist and build a career based on merit, he should not be working in such a light medium. This “painter of the people,” as he was often referred to as, holds no high school diploma, formal training or college degree. Until he was eighteen years of age, Wyeth’s father Newell (otherwise known as N. C. Wyeth) homeschooled him and trained him in the arts. His parents, based in part on his frail health, made this decision about his education. When he was very young, he contracted whooping cough and was prone to illnesses thereafter. Rather than continuing to deal with schools any longer, he attended until the third grade; it was thought best his father taught him at home.

is one of the two or three most familiar American paintings of the 20th century. Only Grant Wood, in American Gothic , and Edward Hopper, in one or two canvases such as House by the Railroad or Nighthawks , have created works of comparable stature. More than half a century after he painted Over a career that has spanned seven decades, Wyeth, now 88 and still painting, has produced a wealth of technically stunning paintings and drawings that have won him a huge popular following and earned him a considerable fortune. But widespread acceptance among critics, art historians and museum curators continues to elude him, and his place in history remains a matter of intense debate. In 1977, when art historian Robert Rosenblum was asked to name both the most overrated and underrated artist of the century, he nominated Andrew Wyeth for both categories. That divergence of opinion persists. Some see Wyeth as a major figure. Paul Johnson, for example, in his book

    ANDREW WYETH
    Painter, Chadds Ford, PA
The youngest of five children, Andrew Newell Wyeth was born on July 12, 1917 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania in the Brandywine Valley near Philadelphia. He was educated at home with his father, noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth, providing art lessons. When he was only 20 years old, he had his first solo exhibition at Macbeth Gallery in New York City. The rapid and complete sale of the exhibition inventory was an indication of his enormous popularity with the American public in the years to come. In 1950, he was selected along with Jackson Pollock by Time magazine as one of the greatest American artists. That and other public attentions, made clear the battle lines drawn between supporters and practitioners of realism and abstraction as represented by Wyeth and Pollock. To add to the art world debates, in 1986, Wyeth made public a collection of 246 studies, drawings, and paintings, including many nudes, he had made of Helga Testorf, a neighbor in Chadds Ford. Wyeth remains an enormously popular artist among the public and by museums. His work is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, among many others. Exhibitions of his work have been mounted by the National Gallery of Art (the first to display the Helga works in 1987), the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston,) Metropolitan Museum of Art, and most recently the Philadelphia Museum of Art, amongst many others.

    Andrew Wyeth
Considered one of the 20th century's quintessential American artists, Andrew Wyeth's images resonate across a diverse group, including serious collectors, casual enthusiasts and the general public. As a member of the famous Wyeth art family, Andrew's overwhelming ability to capture moments in time with exquisite detail, searing them on the hearts of all who lay eyes on his work, is what truly sets him apart in the world of traditional American icons. Andrew Wyeth grew up in historic Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, but spent much of his time vacationing in Cushing, Maine. Both geographic areas significantly influence his work, with his paintings evoking a nostalgic, quiet reflection of natural beauty and rustic grace. The son of the famous illustrator, N.C. Wyeth, young Andrew learned his craft first-hand from his father, as he was home-schooled as a result of poor health. Favoring the medium of watercolor and egg tempera, his "dry brush" method has endured from his days as a child learning from his famous father. Through the decades, his popularity has become incalculable and his accolades, countless. Andrew Wyeth is truly a national treasure.

    Andrew Wyeth: The Greenville Collection
Andrew Wyeth launched his career in 1937, at the age of twenty, with a sold-out exhibition of watercolors in New York. After that debut, his father, noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth (who also served as his art instructor and mentor) wrote him a congratulatory letter that prophesied, "You are headed in the direction that should finally reach the pinnacle in American art." Indeed, he has. Widely acclaimed today as "America's Painter," Wyeth enjoys an international reputation as the preeminent realist of our time. He was the first living artist to be given major exhibitions at both the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg; shows of his work routinely draw hundreds of thousands of visitors around the world. In 1998, the Greenville County Museum of Art established The Greenville Collection of paintings by Andrew Wyeth. The collection emphasizes watercolors of the artists family and friends, as well as landscapes of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where he was born, and Cushing, Maine, his second home since childhood.

An eighteenth century sea captain's house in Cushing, Maine haunted Andrew Wyeth
Last summer I took a wrong turn by the prison in Thomaston, Maine, bumped down a pebble road, and landed smack inside a painting. Or so it seemed. I had reached the remote town of Cushing. A stark, weather-beaten farmhouse sat on a grassy rise overlooking the Georges River and the distant sea. The grass was emerald green and a row of pines fringed the horizon, but all the other details were the same. This was the scene from Andrew Wyeth's haunting Christina's World . Stepping from my car, I half expected to see the crippled young Christina Olson, in a pale pink dress, crawling through the grass.
