GOING OUT: art - thomas woolner
Independent, The (London) Nov 5, 2005 by Peter Chapman Thomas Woolner was a quick convert to the power of photography. Best known for his affiliation to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the sculptor wasn't tempted to become a photographer, but instead used photographs to promote his art. It's worth emphasizing the modernity of Woolner's approach to publicity: during the 1850s, most of his contemporaries used etchings and woodcuts to do the job. An exhibition at the Henry Moore Institute puts some of these commissioned photographs alongside examples of Woolner's work, focusing on his idealised figure of Love and a bust of the Victorian icon Lord Alfred Tennyson. The photographs are the fruits of the artist's association with the London Stereographic Company. Woolner was celebrated for his portrait busts in the 19th century, but he has since been overlooked. This show should help rectify that.

Dec 27, 2002 - Jan 10, 2003
10 curators, 200 artists, 400 art works
In truly democratic style, each art work has the same amount of wall space, but each expresses the particular criteria for art of the individual artist. This show asks, of the artist and viewer: What is the state of contemporary art? Are there shared criteria by which we assess an art work? Is there a global art style to be seen? The 200 artists, mostly London-based but from many different nationalities and backgrounds, were carefully chosen by the ten curators. 14x14 is one of the largest young group exhibitions in London and shows the direction of the next London art scene Curators

Born in Yorkshire, Bayldon emigrated to Queensland in 1891 after having travelled extensively in Europe, the United States and India.
