Thomas Woolner December 17 October 7 ) was an English sculptor and poet. Born in Hadleigh Suffolk he was a founder-member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . Woolner trained with the sculptor William Behnes , exhibiting work at the Royal Academy from "Virgilia bewailing the absence of Coriolanus" in Strawberry Hill, London Woolner's classical inclinations were rather difficult to reconcile with Pre-Raphaelite Medievalism, but his belief in close observation of nature was consistent with their aims. Woolner's sculptures immediately after the foundation of the Brotherhood in display close attention to detail. He made his name with forceful portrait busts and medallions, but was at first unable to make a living. He was forced to emigrate to Australia for a period, but eventually returned to Britain, soon establishing himself as both a sculptor and art-dealer. His visit to Australia nevertheless helped him to obtain commissions there and elsewhere for statues of British imperial heroes, such as Captain Cook and Sir Stamford Raffles . However, his most personal and complex works in sculpture are probably

Article History WOOLNER, THOMAS (1825-1892), sculptor and poet, was born on 1 December 1825 at Hadleigh, Suffolk, England, son of Thomas Woolner, post office sorter, and his first wife Rebecca, n©e Leeks. He received some education at Ipswich. His father took no interest in the boy's early efforts at clay modelling, carving and drawing, but a sympathetic stepmother paid for his training at the studio of William Behnes, sculptor, where he worked for six years. In 1842 he gained admission as a student at the Royal Academy and received some minor commissions. In the next decade he exhibited works regularly at the academy, including his bronze figure of Puck. In 1847 Woolner met D. G. Rossetti and, according to art critic F. G. Stephens, was then 'encamped in a huge, dusty, barnlike studio like a Bedouin in a desert'—probably the studio Woolner shared in Stanhope Street with

Thomas Woolner RA (1825-1892)
The sculptor Thomas Woolner was born in Suffolk, and came to London in about 1838 where he studied sculpture under William Behnes. In 1842 he joined the RA Schools, and in 1848 he was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . Some six years later he left for Australia to seek a wealthier life, and his Pre-Raphaelite brothers drew a famous collection of portraits of each other to send to him. Woolner proved popular in Australia, making in particular portrait medallions. He was able to return to England in 1857 with an enhanced reputation, and it became de rigeur for intellectuals, poets, scientists and similar thinking people to have their portrait sculptures done by Woolner. Among others, he did Wordsworth, Tennyson (four times, the best in 1873), Macaulay, Browning (twice), Palmerstone, Gladstone (twice), Darwin, Huxley, Sedgewick, Kingsley, Dickens, Carlyle, Coventry and Captain Cook. He combined a Rossetti-like sympathy with a Pre-Raphaelite truth to nature, which at first some found hard to accept: Woolner’s busts of Tennyson and Maurice are what may be called a new style; they purport to represent the actual man, without any smoothing over or idealising. We have no objection to the style - the more realistic the better. But we object to Mr Woolner’s rendering of it... in the Maurice we cannot see the face for the wrinkles... in a similar vein the Tennyson’s hair looks so hard that one might take it for strong nicely curled candlewicks steeped in oil. -

Reproduced from The La Trobe Journal No 80, Spring 2007 The only portrait of Lieutenant-Governor Charles Joseph La Trobe dating from his fourteen years of office in Victoria is a low relief, profile portrait medallion executed in 1853. For many years, it was reproduced on the front cover of the La Trobe Library Journal , an appropriate choice of subject both for its uniqueness and its quality. Its creator, Thomas Woolner (1825-1892), who was born in England, was an original member and the only sculptor amongst the famous group of artists formed in London in 1848, known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The seven Brethren were still close when Woolner left for the Victorian gold fields in July 1852. However, by the time he returned to England in 1854, the bonds had loosened and individual members were pursuing their separate careers, even though their fame endured and their stylistic influence persisted in British art for many years. The Last of England These prestigious commissions had just the right profile-raising effect for Woolner. La Trobe had been appointed Lieutenant-Governor of the new colony of Victoria in 1851, and his position now entailed considerable powers of patronage. Equally significant for Woolner was the fact that this head of government was a cultivated man of taste and refinement. In 1840, only five months after their arrival at the rough, frontier Port Phillip settlement, a guest of the La Trobes recorded his impressions of the Jolimont household:
