Whistler was born in Massachusetts. His father, Major George Washington Whistler, who had graduated from West Point, was a civil engineer. His mother Anna McNeill came from an aristocratic southern family. When he was nine the family moved to Russia where his father was building a railroad. Six years later his father died and the family returned to America.
James himself entered West Point, but dropped out in his third year when he failed to pass a chemistry exam. He was later quoted as saying, "Had silicon been a gas I would have been a 'Major-General'."
He worked for a while as a draftsman drawing maps, but he got in trouble for drawing pictures in the margins of the maps. He finally decided to just pursue art, and in 1855 he sailed to Paris. He was to never return to America.
His first successful showing in Paris was at an exhibit of independent artists. The painting was called Symphony in White No. 2 The White Girl

About 4 pages (1,252 words) James McNeill Whistler Summary
Name: James Abbott McNeill Whistler Birth Date: July 10, 1834 Death Date: July 17, 1903 Place of Birth: Lowell, Massachusetts, United States Place of Death: London, England Nationality: American Gender: Male Occupations: painter, etcher
Encyclopedia of World Biography on James Abbott McNeill Whistler The American painter, etcher, and lithographer James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) created a new set of esthetic principles, championed art for art's sake, and introduced a subtle style of painting in which atmosphere and mood predominated. James McNeill Whistler was born in Lowell, Mass., on July 10, 1834, the son of Major George Whistler, a railroad engineer. In 1842 Czar Nicholas I of Russia invited Major Whistler to build a railroad from St. Petersburg to Moscow and offered the princely salary of $12,000 a year. In St. Petersburg the family lived luxuriously, with several servants, and James and his brother had a governess and a Swedish tutor. Because French was the court language, the boys soon became fluent in it. On one occasion the Whistlers took a trip 15 miles out of St. Petersburg to Tsarkoe Selo. Here, in the palace built by Catherine the Great, there was a suite of apartments in the Chinese style containing many fine examples of Oriental porcelain. James was fascinated by this collection and later became a collector of blue-and-white porcelain.

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius:
Selections Annotated and Explained

Russell McNeil, PhD
Editor, Malaspina Great Books
In 1862 the English literary critic and poet Matthew Arnold described Marcus Aurelius as "the most beautiful figure in history." The Stoicism of Aurelius is grounded in rationality and rests solidly on an ethical approach rooted in nature. Stoicism promises real happiness and joy in this life and a serenity that can never be soured by personal misfortune. This philosophy has universal appeal with practical implications on problems ranging from climate change and terrorism to the personal management of sickness, aging, depression and addiction. I truly believe that the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius has much to offer us now...(Click on book cover for more)

Carnegie Sep/Oct 1999 Whistler: Impressions of an American AbroadEtchings and Lithographs from Carnegie Museum of Art Through January 23, 2000, Works on Paper Gallery James Abbott McNeill Whistler never chose the easy path. An artistic genius seldom satisfied with what he produced or with the public's reaction to it, Whistler pushed the limits of his own abilities and the limits of what his viewers would tolerate. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1834, Whistler later claimed that his true birthplace was Baltimore. He had the heart of a Southerner and the intellectual sophistication of the European avant garde and his accent and his manners sometimes seemed English, sometimes French, depending upon whom he was with. After moving to Paris in 1855, he never came back to the United States.
