Back to Impressionism James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American painter and etcher, who assimilated Japanese art styles, made technical innovations, and championed modern art. Many regard him as preeminent among etchers. Most of his life was spent in Europe, where he adopted the slogan “art for art’s sake.” By this Whistler meant that art need have no other purpose than to please through its beauty. Art, according to Whistler, need not have an instructive or morally elevating subject matter, as most painters before and during his lifetime believed. Whistler called his paintings by the musical terms symphony, nocturne, arrangement, caprice, composition etc. because he claimed that “as music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight, and the subject matter has nothing to do with harmony of sound or of color.” Whistler was born on July 10, 1834, in Lowell, Massachusetts. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1851, did not do well in his studies, and left in 1854 to take a job as a draftsman with the U.S. Coast Survey. One year later he left the United States and went to Paris, where he became a pupil of the Swiss classicist painter Charles Gabriel Gleyre.

Interesting In 1878 Whistler sued art critic John Ruskin. These two people met previously and it was obvious that Ruskin did not like the style of paintings that Whistler produced. James Abbott McNeill Whistler was of the opinion that art should be concentrating on beauty in colour and form (l'art pour l'art) rather than depicting objects exactly as if they were real objects. Ruskin called him a spoilt brat and Whistler won the case.
James Abbott McNeill Whistler was a good friend of many important artists, including Antonio de La Gandara

Jpg: CGFA James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) would prove to be the most important American Artist to that time and would have a profound impact on the course of European and modern art. His colorful personality along with his very unique style would place him at the center of a whole storm of controversies. He was the first to declare Art for Art Sake, and to make the point, he would refuse to give conventional titles to his paintings calling them "Symphonies in White", "Nocturne blue and Gold", "A little Note in Yellow", etc.. His intent was to force the public to view his paintings for the art of canvas and paint instead of what it may have represented in life. Of course, all he managed to do was create these outrageously long titles since his oblique designations to subject matter proved to be totally useless for any kind of reference. Although his most well known work is of his mother (which he only ever called "
