Jump to: navigation search The Death of Chatterton, 1856 Henry Wallis ) was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter writer and collector Born in London on 21 February , his father's name and occupation are unknown. When in his mother, Mary Anne Thomas, married Andrew Wallis, a prosperous London architect, Henry took his stepfather's surname. His artistic training was thorough and influential. He was admitted as a probationer to the RA and enrolled in the Painting School in March . He also studied in Paris at Gleyre's atelier and at the Academie de Beaux Arts , sometime between 1849 and 1853. A painting by Wallis depicing Gerard Johnson carving Shakespeare's funerary monument Ben Jonson shows Shakespeare's death mask to the sculptor Wallis is best remembered for his first great success, the painting titled Death of Chatterton , which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856. The painting depicted the impoverished late 18th-century poet Thomas Chatterton , who poisoned himself in despair at the age of seventeen, and was considered a romantic hero for many young and struggling artists in Wallis's day. His method and style in

Wallis Henry - January 1st 1970
Henry Wallis (21 February 1830 - 20 December 1916), English Pre-Raphaelite painter, writer, collector. He began his training at the F.S. Carry academy, and in 1848 he enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools in London . Wallis left for Paris , where he worked in the studio of Charles Gleyre and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. A prolific and talented painter, he produced in his first phase mainly portraits of famous literary figures or scenes from the life of his favourite authors. His most important work was Death of Chatterton, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856, with great critical acclaim. The composition, depicting the suicide of the young writer was a tribute to a key Romantic figure, in an elegant and dramatical style. The success of the work was beyond Wallis' greatest expectations, as in 1857, when exhibited in Manchester , it had to be protected by the police from the crowd. In the end the work was bought by the painter Augusts Egg. The story of the painting was in it's turn interesting, as Wallis had chosen as a model none other than the famous writer George Meredith, then 28 years old. Only two years later Meredith's wife alloped with Wallis, causing a great scandal in Britain Wallis kept working, creating several succesful canvases, some of them inspired by the hardships in the common people lives. Influenced by the pre-Raphaelite group, he produced a series of historical scenes and watercolors.

Henry Wallis Henry Wallis entered the RA Schools in , the same year as Millais . Although Wallis went on to Gleyre's popular studio in Paris, his early work shows clear Pre-Raphaelite influence.
Today Wallis is largely remembered for 'The death of Chatterton' . While the picture doesn't make an obvious appeal to modern tastes, the scandal surrounding it certainly does. The model for Chatterton was George Meredith and, in , Wallis ran away to Capri with Meredith's first wife Mary. She returned to her husband for the sake of form but died from kidney disease in
Meredith certainly remarried, but Wallis's later life is shrouded in some mystery. Although he continued to paint, it seems that in he came into a competence: the consequent dulling of ambition is generally believed (by those lucky enough to have avoided any such mishaps, one must suppose) to account for his lack of later artistic successes. Biographical History
Henry Wallis (1830-1916) was an artist, ceramics expert and collector. He achieved acclaim as a painter with the exhibition of his portrait 'The Death of Chatterton' at the Royal Academy in 1856, and followed up his success with 'The Stonebreaker', which was exhibited in 1858. Although he continued to paint and exhibit, he became increasingly interested in archaeology and ceramics. He travelled extensively and became an authority on Persian, Egyptian, Greek and Byzantine ceramics. He wrote and illustrated twenty volumes on ceramics during the period 1885-1899. He never married but he did have a son, Harold ('Felix'), with his lover Mary Meredith. For further details see Dictionary of National Biography and Timothy Wilson's article, 'A Victorian artist as ceramic collector: the letters of Henry Wallis', parts 1-2

Notes on the life of the PreRaphaelite artist henry wallis and links to related information.
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/speel/paint/wallis.htm
Henry Wallis (1830-1916)
Henry Wallis trained at Cary's Academy and the Royal Academy Schools (1848), and later at Gleyre's in Paris. He exhibited from 1853, choosing literary subjects, most especially the homes of Shakespeare, Raleigh etc. In 1856 he exhibited his great Pre-Raphaelite picture The Death of Chatterton which won him enormous popularity. George Meredith, the poet and novelist, was the model for Chatterton, an unfortunate step for him, as Wallis eloped with his wife, marrying her in 1857/8. In 1857 Wallis painted his second important Pre-Raphaelite picture, The Stonebreaker John Brett exhibited a painting by the same title in the following year). In 1859 Wallis inherited a fortune that allowed him to live independently, and after this, although he continued to exhibit, he never produced anything as important as his early pictures. He worked greatly in watercolours, and became RWS in 1880. Among various late works, he produced pictures of Cairo and Suez street scenes, all tending to genre. The Death of Chatterton is at the Tate Gallery and The Stonebreaker is in Birmingham , where also may be found Pre-Raphaelite studies of girl-musicians. A portrait of the poet Thomas Love Peacock is in the National Portrait Gallery.
