Der Sohn wurde mit 13 Jahren auf die dortige Kunstschule geschickt und erhielt schon nach einem Jahr eine Medaille. 1865 begleitete er seinen Vater nach M¼nchen, wo dieser eine Reihe von Figuren nach Peter Vischer schnitzen sollte. Der Sohn wurde durch den Maler Echter in seinen Studien sehr gef¶rdert. An den M¼nchner Aufenthalt erinnert der Herkomerplatz in M¼nchen- Bogenhausen 1866 trat er in die Schule von South Kensington ein, musste aber schon f¼nf Monate darauf nach Southampton zur¼ckkehren. 1868 lieŸ er sich in dem kleinen Dorf Hythe nieder und malte in d¼rftigen Umst¤nden zwei Bilder, die 1869 in der Dudley-Galerie ausgestellt wurden. Abstract Hubert von Herkomer (born 1849, Waal, Bavaria; died 1914, Budleigh Salterton, Devonshire) first achieved prominence in England with his illustrations of modern life for the Graphic magazine. Despite the fact that Herkomer became one of the most successful and influential artists of the late Victorian age, his reputation fell into obscurity after his death. This thesis aims to re-establish Herkomer's stature by describing and analyzing his scenes from modern life. Born at Waal, in Bavaria, he moved to England as a child. Herkomer briefly studied art at South Kensington, but he was largely self-taught. In the late 1860s he illustrated books and journals, making his name as a painter with The Last Muster (1875, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, England). He founded the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey in 1883, where his best-known pupil was William Nicholson. From 1885 to 1894 he was Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford. return H. H. RICHARDSON (1838-1886) by Sir Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) While a Harvard undergraduate, Henry Hobson Richardson decided to become an architect. At that time, no schools in the United States taught this profession, so Richardson trained in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, studying there between 1860 and 1862. After an apprenticeship in France, he returned to America in 1865. He settled first in New York City, but in 1874 he moved his practice to the Boston area. Richardson, who soon became the most admired American architect of his day, found much of his inspiration in the reinterpretation of the medieval Romanesque style. English painter Sir Hubert von Herkomer was on his second painting expedition to America when he undertook this likeness. He noted in his diary that Richardson was "as solid in his friendship as in his figure. Big-bodied, big-hearted, large-minded, full-brained, loving as he is pugnacious." Richardson drew up exterior designs for the artist's English country house, which was built in the 1890s, presumably as payment for the portrait. Oil on canvas, 1886
