marriage and early career
After Johannes Vermeer's baptism in 1632, little or nothing is known of the artist himself until he marries Catharina Bolnes in 1653. However, surviving archival documents provide an interesting picture of his family background and immediate social milieu.
John Michael Montias' invaluable Vermeer: A Web of Social History was used for much of the information regarding Vermeer's life and family relations contained in this timeline. Montias' book currently constitutes the basis on which all other research regarding Vermeer's life and immediate social milieu is founded.

Catharina is one year younger than Johannes. The young couple most likely went to live with Vermeer's family in the large inn bought by Vermeer's father called "Mechelen." Since Maria Thin's own marriage to Reynier Bones (when he was a prosperous brick maker) had been very troubled, she may have considered very closely the marriage of her daughter.

Johannes Vermeer
A Review by Mark Harden The exhibition "Johannes Vermeer", on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. November 12, 1995 through February 11, 1996 before moving to The Hague's Royal Cabinet of Paintings Mauritshuis, was the first ever exclusively dedicated to the paintings of the celebrated seventeenth-century master of Delft. This show brought together twenty-three of the thirty-six works attributed to Vermeer, presenting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a thorough survey of his stunning work. Vermeer chose as his motifs moments from ordinary life. He often portrayed individuals transfixed in quiet contemplation or in the performance of some seemingly mundane task: pouring water or milk, reading or writing a letter, donning jewelry. Yet the images are rendered with such expressive virtuosity that these moments are transformed into aspects of eternal truth. The means by which Vermeer accomplished this transformation is one of the arcane mysteries of his art. The inviting realism of his paintings makes them accessible to nearly everyone. A closer examination of Vermeer's technique, however, reveals that he often altered reality in order to achieve a more powerful expression of his theme. The manipulation of light and shadow, in particular, served to intensify aspects of his composition. The preparations for the exhibit have resulted in valuable additions to Vermeer scholarship. Most of the works underwent cleaning prior to the show, which not only presented their pristine appearance, but revealed many hitherto unrecognized subtleties in technique. Specialists have subjected the paintings to x-radiograph and infrared reflectography. These state-of-the-art methods provide a behind-the-scenes look at how Vermeer planned and executed the works. In many cases they reveal changes he made to his original composition, providing insight into his creative process.

Johannes Vermeer, Delft 1632 - Delft 1675
On October 31, 1632, Jan, the son of Reynier and Digna Vermeer, was baptized in New Church in Delft. In 1641, Reynier Jansz bought the "Mechelen" house with an adjoining inn on the Grote Markt square in Delft. His father, a weaver and inn keeper, was enrolled in the Guild of Saint Luke as Mr. Constvercoper (master merchant of artworks). Jan Vermeer would see his first paintings in his father's establishment. On April 23, 1653, the civil marriage of Jan Vermeer and Catharina Bolnes was celebrated in the Delft city hall; she was from Gouda and five years his senior. They would have 15 children, 4 of whom died at a young age. On December 29, 1653, Vermeer enrolled as a master painter in the Guild of Saint Luke in Delft. In 1662, Vermeer was elected the Guild's president. On December 16, 1675, Jan Vermeer, a painter by trade, forty-three years old, was entombed in Old Church in Delft. These are the only three documents which have survived: his birth, his marriage and his death certificates. Some stories about his family, inheritance, debts and that is all. This man's masters, models and companions are unknown to us. We do not have a single handwritten line or a self-portrait. Vermeer is not part of art history and has become a ghost which we can only glimpse fleetingly and guess at through the work he left us. At the time of his death, Vermeer left behind eleven children, of which 10 were minors. On April 24 and 30, 1676, Catharina Vermeer filed petitions with Holland's and Zeeland's High Courts to obtain assignment letters to his creditors, invoking the disastrous conditions caused by the war and her husband's decease. The ruling was in her favor. On March 15, 1677, the Vermeer estate's paintings were sold at the Guild. Twenty-one of the master's paintings were dispersed. On December 30, 1687, Catharina Vermeer-Bolnes received last rites; she was buried three days later. The last of Vermeer's works were sold to Delft's last collectors, who locked them up in their cupboards. The shutters closed. Nobody spoke about Jan Vermeer. His name was forgotten.

Vermeer's Camera
This painting, often referred to as 'The Music Lesson', was created by the great Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer in the 1660s. It shows an exquisitely painted interior scene, with a woman playing the virginals and a man listening. The woman has her back to us, although we can see a reflection of her face in the mirror on the wall. The man's role is unclear. He appears to be wearing an outdoor coat, and is carrying a stick. Has he just stepped inside from the street, to ask the woman a question, and now hangs on her answer? Is he a relation? Her teacher? Her lover? The answer to this little mystery we may never know. But this painting contains a quite extraordinary set of clues about a much bigger mystery, one which has only recently been deciphered. Vermeer (1632-75) only produced about 30 paintings during his lifetime. He really seems to have worked rather slowly. When he died, his wife and family were left in debt. Two paintings went to the local baker to settle a bill. But since about 100 years ago, his work started to be re-assessed, and today he is regarded as one of the greatest artists that ever lived. Very little is known about Vermeer's life, and his methods of working. He had no students or apprentices, and he left no records. But many people have speculated that he might have used some sort of optical device to help him create his paintings, possibly a device called a

With Rembrandt
In his earliest paintings, Vermeer surveyed the styles of various seventeenth-century artists. For example, in Christ in the House of Mary and Martha (ca. 1655; Edinburgh, National Gallery of Scotland), he achieved an unlikely mixture of Anthony van Dyck and Hendrick ter Brugghen. The Procuress Caravaggesque works by the court painter Gerrit van Honthorst, except for the apparent self-portrait which in its handling of light and soft focus resembles a moment caught in a mirror. Similar effects had been achieved in Delft by the short-lived

Glazing in the Art of Johannes Vermeer
by Jonathan Janson click here for books about the technique of Vermeer and the Great Masters O f all the old masters' painting techniques, glazing is perhaps the most discussed but the least understood. Completely abandoned in the twentieth-century, it was once one of the most valuable tools possessed by painters. In recent years glazing has been called upon by art historians and painters alike to explain every nuance of past masterpieces assuming an almost mystical character.
Glazing a Red Satin Dress
step one
Vermeer first crafted the so-called underpainting , modeling forms and creating light effects with shades of opaque vermilion and flake white. Vermilion was the only strong red opaque pigment available, it had an orange over tone. A small amount of bone black was added in the darker shadows. This layer was allowed to dry completely
step two
Over the underpainting Vermeer applied one or two very thin layers of madder lake, a deep ruby red, which is transparent by nature. These transparent layers are called glazes The glazing process creates a brilliant luminous red similar to similar to stained-glass and cannot be realized by direct mixture of paints.

The Girl with a Pearl Earring
An In-Depth Study
by Jonathan Janson The Girl with a Pearl Earring is universally recognized as one of Johannes Vermeer's absolute masterworks. After more than a century of study, the work still poses significant questions. Who was the sitter and was the painting even intended as a portrait? Why had it remained in complete obscurity until it was rediscovered in 1882 and sold for the price of a reproduction? Was it a part of a pendant? Did Vermeer sell the painting during his lifetime? Why was the original background a deep transparent green rather than the black we see today? Was the pearl a real one? What significance did the turban have? Which painting procedures did Vermeer employ? Which pigments did he use?

At that time, about 5 years ago, I didn't know just his name. I saw this picture on a book. But this picture is used without a name of Vermeer. Then I examined who painted this girl. In fact, it was not so difficult to find his name, Vermeer. 'cause he is enough famous for also people who don't have a specialty of arts. And while I examined little by little, I found lots of interesting things about him. One of them is his history. Here I introduce a tiny history. In 1632, he, Johannes Vermeer, was born in Delft, Holland. His father worked on silk weaver and art dealer. Then in 1653, Vermeer married Catherina Bolnes. Until in 1675 he died, he had 8 children with his wife. His estate, 19(!!) paintings, bequeathed to his widow and Maria Thins, who was the eldest daughter. But, in 1676, when was just one year after his death, the widow had to pay a debt of "617" guilders to a baker with two paintings.

Vermeer's parents were Protestant Reformed, a Calvinist denomination that held infant baptism as a sacrament. (Vermeer himself is thought to have converted to Roman Catholicism when he married.)

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675)
Vermeer exemplified the height of the Dutch Renaissance, employing a technique that encompassed the finest details of a scene while paying careful attention to macroscopic harmony and order. He was a master at accurately depicting the interplay of light and shadow with respect to both inanimate objects and persons, and employing this knowledge to selectively emfasize the key details of his works. Note, for example, the light directed at the Geografer and his charts, stating, in a wonderful visual metafor, that his is the path to illumination. Like the Geografer, the subjects of Vermeer's paintings are industrious, dignified human beings, pursuing worthy and uplifting tasks from painting to music to astronomy.
