His entire life was spent in the town of Delft . Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial painter in his lifetime. He seems to have never been particularly wealthy, perhaps due to the fact that he produced relatively few paintings, leaving his wife and eleven children in debt at his death. Virtually forgotten for nearly two hundred years, in 1866 the art critic Thor© B¼rger published an essay attributing 66 pictures to him (only 35 paintings are firmly attributed to him today). Since that time Vermeer's reputation has grown, and he is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age , and is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work.

His artwork - forgotten for 200 years until discussed by art critic Thor©-B¼rger in 1866 - has earned him respect as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
Who was named the bird of paradise in the farmyard of Dutch painting (Anonymous c. 1886)?
Johannes Vermeer
Johannes (Jan) Vermeer (1632-1675), the 17th-century Dutch genre painter who lived and worked in Delft and who painted " Girl With a Pearl Earring ," created some of the most exquisite paintings in Western art.
Genre Painting
Genre paintings illustrate Dutch proverbs and sayings, or convey a moralistic message, the meaning of which is not always easy to decipher today. Many genre paintings depict everyday scenes from daily life – thus the origin of the term "genre" – like brawls in taverns, men at work, women busy at domestic chores, soldiers playing cards, and scenes inside brothels. Additionally, landscapes, portraits, and still-lifes, which had existed for centuries, were re-examined in a fresh light and brought to new levels of naturalness.

Abstract
Johannes Vermeer, who died in 1675 in his native city of Delft at the age of 42, created a small body of what are now considered to be almost perfect works. A master of composition and in the use of space, he was also one of the most skilled of the Dutch painters of his era in the use of light, producing mostly precise interior scenes of geometrically perfect composition that evoke a world of tranquillity and deep restfulness.
From the Paper
"Johannes Vermeer, who died in 1675 in his native city of Delft at the age of 42, created a small body of what are now considered to be almost perfect works. Given his exalted reputation in the late 20th century, it is a little hard to believe that the painter's works lay in obscurity for decades, not receiving significant attention after his death until the mid-19th century. The intimate scale of his paintings that is now revered was for a substantial period of time a liability. For example Gowing (1970) writes that "nowhere else ..."

    1632 - 1675 (Dutch)
Johannes Vermeer (1632 - December 15, 1675) was a Dutch painter. Vermeer is also known as Vermeer of Delft or Johannes van der Meer.
Vermeer was born in Delft and stayed there all his life. He was buried in the Old Church (Oude Kerk) in Delft.
Vermeer is after Rembrandt the second most famous Dutch painter of the 17th century (a period which is better known as the Dutch Golden Age for its astonishing cultural and artistic achievements). His paintings are admired for their transparent colours, well though-out composition and brilliant use of light.
Little is known about the life of Vermeer. He married Catharina Bolenes in 1653. In that same year he joined the Sint Lucas painters guild. Later, in 1662 and 1669, he was chosen to preside over the guild. Vermeer did earn a meagre income as an art dealer rather than through selling his paintings. Sometimes he even had to pay his debts to local food stores with a painting. Vermeer died very poor. His widow had to trade all paintings still in her possession to the city council in return for a small allowance (one source even says this was only one painting, also Vermeer's last work named Clio).
Very few paintings of Vermeer are known today. Only 35 to 40 works that are attributed to him do exist (views on authencity of some works differ).

He painted mainly interior genre subjects, depicting members of aristocratic and upper-middle-class society. About half of these paintings show solitary figures of women absorbed in some ordinary, everyday activity. His interiors combine a microscopic observation of objects with a meticulous depiction of the gradations of daylight on varied shapes and surfaces. Johannes Vermeer lived out his life in Delft, Holland. His father, Reynier, was a silk weaver who was also a registered Master Art Dealer at the St. Luke’s Guild in Delft. In 1631, his father was successful enough to buy a large house called “the Mechelen” on the market square in Delft where he probably sold artworks. When Reynier died in 1653, Johannes inherited his father’s business and the house. By then, Johannes had already decided to become a painter. Johannes became a master in the St. Luke’s Guild at that time. No one knows for sure who Johannes studied under, maybe Leonaert Bramer or Carel Fabritius. It is assumed that other local artists, such as Gerard ter Borch II and Pieter de Hooch, may have influenced his style and he may have travel to Amsterdam or Utrecht to further his studies. He started out painting historical subjects - large-scale religious and mythological paintings. Soon, however, he began painting the landscapes and allegories for which he became famous. His landscapes continued to reflect the quiet, intimate mood of his earlier historical works. Many of his 35 works were in the collection of a patron in Delft, which helps to explain why he was not well-known outside of Delft. Raised and baptized a Protestant, Johannes converted to Catholicism shortly before his marriage in 1653 to make his future mother-in-law happy. He and his wife, Catharina Bolnes, eventually moved from “the Mechelen” to her mother’s house in the “Papists Corner” area of Delft, near one of the two hidden churches where Catholics could worship.

A look at the life and painting techniques of Johannes Vermeer, painter of "Girl with a Pearl Earring."
Johannes Vermeer Today Vermeer is considered to be one of the great Dutch master painters even though it has never been proven that he sold even one of his paintings. The lack of wealth and fame that he gained from his work it not important, though. What makes Vermeer great is his use of techniques called pointill© and camera obscura Pointill© is the creation of transparent colors by adding the paint onto the canvas in loosely granular layers. Camera obscura is what Vermeer probably used to create the sparkling pearly highlights you may have noticed in his paintings.

Jan or Johannes Vermeer van Delft , b. October 1632, d. December 1675, a Dutch genre painter who lived and worked in Delft, created some of the most exquisite paintings in Western art. His works are rare. Of the 35 or 36 paintings generally attributed to him, most portray figures in interiors. All his works are admired for the sensitivity with which he rendered effects of light and color and for the poetic quality of his images. Little is known for certain about Vermeer's life and career. He was born in 1632, the son of a silk worker with a taste for buying and selling art. Vermeer himself was also active in the art trade. He lived and worked in Delft all his life. Not much is known about Vermeer's apprenticeship as an artist either. His teacher may have been Leonaert Bramer, a Delft artist who was a witness at Vermeer's marriage in 1653, or the painter Carel Fabritius of Delft. In 1653 he enrolled at the local artists guild. His earliest signed and dated painting, The Procuress (1656; Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden), is thematically related to a

Susan Vreeland Little is known about Vermeer. For a start, we don't know what he looked like. There are no confirmed images of him, though in one of his early works, The Procuress , a man looks out at the viewer from the edge of the scene, which in Dutch painting of the time was often the artist himself. In The Art of Painting a painter sits with his back to us. We don't know if it's meant to be Vermeer, but it gives us an idea of what an artist in his studio might have looked like. The few known facts about Vermeer's life come from legal documents , of marriages and births and sales and debts. The son of innkeepers, he was born in 1632 in Delft, a town of about 25,000 people best known for its blue and white glazed earthenware. He spent all of his life there, though he may have done a six-year painting apprenticeship elsewhere, possibly in Amsterdam or Utrecht. In 1653 Vermeer converted to Catholicism and married Catharina Bolnes, a Catholic from a well-off bourgeois family. They had eleven surviving children. The family lived in the house of Maria Thins, Vermeer's mother-in-law, in an area off the main Market Square known as Papists' Corner because of the concentration of Catholics living there. Only 20% of the population were Catholic; the rest were Protestant. Catholics were tolerated but barred from municipal functions and required to worship privately. There were two "hidden" churches in Delft, one right next door to Maria Thins' house.

Back to Baroque Style Johannes (Jan) Vermeer, was a Dutch painter, a master in portraying interior scenes composed with mathematical clarity, much like colour photographs of our time. He was born in Delft, and after serving a 6-year apprenticeship was admitted in 1653 to the guild of St. Luke of Delft as a master painter. An important member of the guild, he served four terms on its board of governors. He made a modest living as an art dealer rather than as a painter.
