Matteson (1813-1884), at Sherburne, N.Y., later under Picot, in Paris , and then, in 1857-61, in Italy . After 1867 he lived in Rome , making occasional visits to America . He was elected to full membership in the National Academy of Design, New York , in 1865. He devoted himself to the painting of genre pictures, which, however, attracted only modest attention until the publication, in 1884, of his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam ; these immediately gave him a high place in the art world. Elihu Vedder (1836-1923) Elihu Vedder is an American artist who never lived in Britain, and finds a place on these pages, along with a few other foreign painters, because his work is so much in the same spirit as that of British Victorian artists, and especially the Classical School. The so-called 'American Pre-Raphaelites' tend to be landscape painters, but Elihu Vedder, in his realist pictures showing classical, mythological and ideal scenes, seems to me very close to painters across the Atlantic. Vedder was born in New York City, showed an early inclination to painting, and studied under the genre painter Tomkins H. Matteson (Mathieson) before continuing in Paris for a few months in 1856 under Picot, and then in Florence. He returned in 1861 to New York, but settled permanently in Rome in 1865. For the rest of his life he travelled frequently in Europe and back to America. Engraving after picture by Vedder. Signed, lower right Gift of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 955-0-145 During his long residence in Italy, Elihu Vedder visited not only the usual picturesque Italian sites such as the Roman Campagna and Subiaco but also those such as San Remo, Bordighera, and Capri, not on the traditional nineteenth-century tourist route because of their inaccessibility, but which offered the ruggedness and desolation that Vedder found attractive. From 1858 on he made small oil sketches of local landscape views, keeping most of them because he liked them so much, showing them to friends when they visited, and, on occasion, exhibiting them.1 After his death, his daughter bequeathed them to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which subsequently distributed them to various American museums. Cliffs of Volterra is among the finest of these landscape studies. On his first visit to Italy from 1858 to 1860 Vedder developed a close relationship with Giovanni (Nino) Costa, who belonged to the Macchiaioli, a group of young Italian painters committed to new developments of plein-air painting. Vedder and Costa traveled together to the hill towns around Tuscany where they painted directly from nature, at times selecting the same subject so as to compare their techniques and results.
