Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)
Van Gogh is now one of the most well-known post-Impressionist painters, although he was not widely appreciated in his lifetime. Vincent Van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in Zundert in the southern Netherlands, the son of a pastor. In 1869 he took his first job, working in the Hague branch of an international art dealing firm. He began to write to his younger brother Theo, a correspondence which continued for the rest of Van Gogh's life. Van Gogh's job took him to London and Paris, but he was not interested in the work and was dismissed in 1876. He briefly became a teacher in England, and then, deeply interested in Christianity, a preacher in a mining community in southern Belgium. In 1880, at the age of 27, he decided to become an artist. He moved around, teaching himself to draw and paint and receiving financial support from Theo. In 1886 Van Gogh joined Theo in Paris, and met many artists including Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Pissarro and Gauguin, with whom he became friends. His style changed significantly under the influence of Impressionism, becoming lighter and brighter. He painted a large number of self-portraits in this period.

A bout Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890) He sold only one painting during his lifetime ( Red Vineyard , [see below]), and was little known to the art world at the time of his death, but his fame grew rapidly thereafter. His influence on Expressionism Fauvism and early abstraction was enormous, and it can be seen in many other aspects of twentieth century art. His stormy and dramatic life and his unswerving devotion to his ideals have made him one of the great cultural heroes of modern times, providing the most auspicious material for the twentieth century vogue in romanticized psychological biography. Anton Mauve was an early influence on van Gogh, working with him for a short time. This prolific and popular Dutch realist painter's wife was van Gogh's cousin. A short biography and many samples of the artist s work.

Vincent van Gogh
Self-portrait The history of Impressionism would not be complete without the distinctive work of Vincent van Gogh. Paintings of this world famous artist are at the top of today's art price range. He began from drawing and painting dark realistic scenes, but after meeting Impressionists he employed their motifs, bright colours and style of painting. Van Gogh's life was afflicted with mental trouble. His short period of artistic co-operation with Gauguin ended with van Gogh's symbolic act of self-mutilation: he cut off an earlobe. Although most of his last months van Gogh spent under psychiatric treatment, paintings from this period brought him the greatest fame. Van Gogh's work became a basic influence on the development of the Fauvism and Expressionism.

Gogh, Vincent van, is generally considered to be the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt van Rijn , and, with Paul Cezanne and Paul Gauguin , the greatest of Post-Impressionist artists. Vincent van Gogh created Postimpressionism and powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art, though he had little success during his lifetime. Van Gogh produced all of his 900+ paintings and 1100+ drawings during a period of only 10 years before he succumbed to mental illness, possibly bipolar disorder, and committed suicide. The striking, bold, intense colors, the emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms of his work are highly expressive , even emotional. Van Gogh used the symbolic and expressive values of colors for expressing emotions rather than, as did the Impressionists, for the reproduction of visual appearances, atmosphere, or light. The term Post-Impressionist does, however, acknowledge that Impressionism had shaped this artist. Van Gogh's influence on Expressionism, Fauvism and early abstraction was enormous, and can be seen in many other aspects of 20th century art. Several paintings by Van Gogh are among the most expensive paintings in the world. On May 15, 1990 Van Gogh's Portrait of Doctor Gachet was sold for in auction, establishing a new price record. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is dedicated to Van Gogh's work. The Kroller-Muller Museum in Otterlo (also in The Netherlands), has a considerable collection of Vincent van Gogh paintings as well.

51. Troubled Life Of Vincent Van Gogh
In vincent van gogh s own words, he said, What lives in art and is eternally living, is first of all the painter, and then the painting.
http://cvc.csusb.edu/VincentVanGogh.htm
The Troubled Life Of Vincent Van Gogh by Bonnie Butterfield (These Valuable Images Are Slow Loading-Please Read The Text While You Wait) Self Portrait Of Vincent Van Gogh The 19th century European society of Van Gogh's day was not ready to accept his truthful and emotionally morbid way of depicting his art subjects. His internal turbulence is clearly seen in most of his paintings, which set the stage for the direction of a new style of painting called Expressionism. It is characterized by the use of symbols and a style that expresses the artist's inner feelings about his subject. Therefore, an understanding of the paintings by Van Gogh requires insight into his turbulent life, because his style of painting is exemplified by a projection of the painter's inner experience onto the canvas he paints. In Vincent Van Gogh's own words, he said, "What lives in art and is eternally living, is first of all the painter, and then the painting." To understand an artist of Expressionism we must first explore their biography. Many of us can identify with the roadblocks that Vincent Van Gogh experienced in his many career and romantic pursuits, all ending in failure. His reaction to these experiences however, demonstrates a biological and psychological abnormality, causing behaviors that alienated those around him. As he became more isolated from society and began to pour all of his energies into painting, his eccentricities and outbursts developed pathological traits, which caused him first, to be institutionalized, and second, it led to his suicidal death at the young age of 37.

Genius Ignored , Chapter 7: Van Gogh [Summary: Van Gogh was an indisputable genius, utterly, indisputably ignored. He created hundreds of bold, brilliant paintings; only one was sold during his lifetime.] It's entirely possible that if Van Gogh had never lived this book would never have been written. Not that these other artists wouldn't have been just as great and just as ignored, but the concept might have been kind of fuzzy. Van Gogh brings it into focus: an indisputable genius, utterly, indisputably ignored. No repetition inures us; we are freshly shocked and amazed. After having failed as an art dealer and a Protestant evangelist, Van Gogh decided at the age of 27 to become an artist. He received a smattering of formal education, but mostly, with singular feverishness and dedication, studied and practiced on his own. In his 33rd year he moved to Paris, blossoming into a brilliant colorist. Two years later he moved south to Arles, producing bold, bright paintings and drawings at a miraculous rate. He started suffering bouts of insanity. He moved north to Auvers, near Paris, continuing to paint wonderfully. He killed himself at the age of 37. He and his brother Theo who had supported him financially and emotionally throughout his career had been able to sell only one painting while he was still alive.
