Flemish Artist Jan van Eyck
Court Painter to John of Bavaria
Suzanne Hill Sep 28, 2007
Before he became famous and was lured to Burgundy by Philip the Good, Jan van Eyck, who perfected the new oil painting medium, was hired by John III the Pitiless.
Q: Which painter i s first recorded at the court of John of Bavaria in the Hague in 1422?
A: Jan Van Eyck
Jan van Eyck (born c. 1385 in Maaseik of Li¨ge of the Holy Roman Empire and died c. 1441 in Bruges) was a Flemish painter who perfected the newly developed technique of oil painting. He is considered one of the great painters of the late Middle Ages. A common misconception about van Eyck, which dates back to the 16th-century writings of the Tuscan historiographer Giorgio Vasari, is that van Eyck himself created oil painting. It is however true that he perfected new and remarkable effects with the technique of oil painting, blending realism with brilliant colors, and he could recreate any emotion. His naturalistic paintings, mostly portraits and religious subjects, make extensive use of disguised religious symbols.

The Arnolfini Marriage
The Marriage of Giovanni Arnolfini and Giovanna Cenami; 1434 (130 Kb); Oil on wood, 81.8 x 59.7 cm (32 1/4 x 23 1/2 in); National Gallery, London This title has traditionally been given to this painting because it was thought to be a form of ``wedding certificate'' for Giovanni Arnolfini and Giovanna Cenami, who married in Bruges in 1434. He was an Italian merchant, she the daughter of an Italian merchant. Their grave, youthful faces both have a lovely responsability that is typical of van Eyck. Van Eyck's art reached perhaps its greatest triumph in the painting of portraits. One of his most famous portraits is The betrothal of the Arnolfini From top to bottom:
Symbolic candle
The solitary flame burning in bright daylight can be interpreted as the bridall candle, or God's all-seeing eye, or simply as a devotional candle. Another symbol is St Margaret (the patron saint of women in childbirth), whose image is carved on the high chairback.
An elaborate signature
As today, marriages in 15th-century Flanders could take place privately rather than in church. Van Eyck's Latin signature, in the Gothic calligraphy used for legal documents, reads: ``Jan van Eyck was present'', and has been interpreted by some as an indication that the artist himself served as a witness.

Ghent Altarpiece (The Adoration of the Holy Lamb) of 1432. The polyptych, commissioned by Joos Vijd and his wife Isabel Borluut, bears an inscription by the painter in praise of his brother Hubert; this inscription and Hubert van Eyck himself (who for many years was thought to have painted part of the altarpiece) have been the subject of extensive study and speculation. Among Van Eyck's most notable works are The Virgin of Lucca (Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt), The Madonna with Chancellor Rolin (Louvre), and The Madonna of Canon Van der Paele (Groeningemuseum, Bruges). Equally interesting are his portraits such as the Arnolfini Marriage of 1434 in which the artist deploys what has been called Symbolic Realism, and A Man in a Turban (both National Gallery, London). In his study of the Flemish Primitives, Panofsky said of Van Eyck that "his sight was simultaneously a microscope and a telescope."

NORTHERN RENAISSANCE Wednesday 14 November 2007 triple-bill midnight-3am In this three-part series, art historian Joseph Leo Koerner argues that the Renaissance in Northern Europe - more so than its Italian counterpart - laid the foundations of modern art. 1. THE SUPREME ART Wednesday 14 November 2007 midnight-1am In the early 15th century, the remarkable oil paintings of Flemish artist Jan van Eyck transformed a lowly craft into the supreme art and began an image revolution that would change art forever. His work launched an artistic renaissance in Northern Europe that rivals the achievements of his Italian contemporaries and remains uncannily relevant to us today. Harbison, Craig Jan van Eyck The Play of Realism . Distributed for Reaktion Books. 228 p. x Paper NSA $35.00sp ISBN: 978-0-94-846279-5 (ISBN-10: 0-94-846279-5)
Jan van Eyck's surviving work comprises a series of painstakingly detailed oil paintings of astonishing verisimilitude. In a fascinating recovery of the neglected human dimension that is clearly present in these works, Craig Harbison interrogates the personal histories of the worldly participants of such masterpieces as the Virgin and Child with George van der Paele, the Arnolfini Double Portrait and the Virgin and Child with Nicolas Rolin. With the aid of abundant visual evidence in color and in black and white, Harbison reveals how van Eyck presented his contemporaries with a more subtle and complex view of the value of appearances as a route to understanding the meaning of life.

Jan van Eyck is considered one of the founders and leading masters of early Netherlandish panel painting. This portrait shows Cardinal Niccolò Albergati, head of the Carthusian Order, who travelled on a pontifical mission to the courts of England, France and Burgundy for peace negotiations to end the Hundred Years War between England and France. Jan van Eyck, court painter to Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy, made a silverpoint sketch (today in Dresden) as a preparatory drawing for this painting. Despite the realistic, carefully observed traces of age in the old man`s face, the portrait radiates dignified repose. Painters A - Z >>....................... The Ghent Altarpiece
“The Adoration of the Lamb”
painted 1432 As is usual with so many of the great religious artists of the Renaissance, van Eyck's birth date is unknown, but usually given as around 1390. His ability to secure patronages, first with John of Bavaria and then with Phillip the Good of Burgundy gave him not only the good life but also the freedom to pursue his own artistic way. His developments and skill in working with oils brought the medium to its full glory that we so enjoy today. Until van Eyck, oils were little used. After him, oils were the medium of choice. His ability in the use of oils, especially in the reflections of light, still amaze us today. Reality and detail are his trademarks. And perhaps vanity. In the Virgin of Canon van der Paele, his portrait can be seen reflected in the shield of St George, and in The Arnolfini Portrait, two figures are seen in the mirror.
It is assumed that he learned some of his artistic skills from his older brother Hubert, but this is unknown as is the fact that the Hubert that appears on the Ghent alter piece is actually his brother, or for that matter even an artist. That Hubert could have done the carvings. The assumption is based on the apparent differing styles among the murals and that Jan took over after the original artist (his brother?) died. Van Eyck did have a younger brother that was an artist. Either way, it is Jan van Eyck that we remember today, for his religious art and his life like portraits.
