Jan belonged to the Van Eyck family of painters and was a younger brother of Hubert van Eyck.
The date of his birth is not more accurately known than that of his elder brother, but he was born much later than Hubert van Eyck, who took charge of him and made him his "disciple". Under this tuition John learnt to draw and paint, and mastered the properties of colours from Pliny. Later on, Hubert admitted him into partnership, and both were made court painters to Philip of Charolais.
After the breaking up of the prince's household in 1421, Jan became his own master, left the workshop of Hubert, and took an engagement as painter to John of Bavaria, at that time resident at The Hague as Count of Holland. From the Hague he returned in 1424 to take service with Philip, now duke of Burgundy, at a salary of 100 livres per annum, and from that time till his death Jan van Eyck remained the faithful servant of his prince, who never treated him otherwise than graciously.
He was frequently employed in missions of trust; and following the fortunes of a chief who was always in the saddle, he appears for a time to have been in ceaseless motion, receiving extra pay for secret services at Leiden, drawing his salary at Bruges, yet settled in a fixed abode at Lille.

Even within his own time, Jan van Eyck was the stuff of legend. Within a century, the legend might well have belonged to the most distant and allusive origins of art.
FIRST THINGS
How does an artist become a legend? Part of it is coming from outside a culture, as a sign or as a savior. Sure enough, modern accounts of van Eyck so often begin in Renaissance Italy, with how he appeared to Giorgio Vasari. Borrowing terms from tales of the painter Appeles a millennium before, Vasari's Lives credits van Eyck with the invention of his craft. He was the first to paint in oils, an alchemist, a mathematician. In his technique, he had

Flemish painter, active in Brugge (Bruges), who, along with Robert Campin (previously known only as the Master of Flémalle) in Tournai, was the founder of the Ars Nova ("new art") of 15th-century northern late Gothic painting, which heralded the Renaissance in northern Europe. This period of Netherlandish art is characterized by a naturalistic style of vivid oil colors, meticulous detail, accurately rendered textures, and the illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface.
Jan probably came from Maaseick in the province of Limbourg. In 1422 he was working in The Hague for John of Bavaria, count of Holland. In 1425 Philip the Good, duke of Bourgogne, appointed him court painter, a position he retained until his death. Jan was on especially good terms with Philip, who entrusted him with certain secret diplomatic missions, presented one of his children with a christening gift, and personally interceded for him when he learned that Jan was having trouble collecting his salary.
Jan's contemporaries were awed by his amazing technical skill and his precise renderings of carefully observed detail. These qualities explain why he was still called the King of Painters by his compatriots as late as the 16th century.

It is not constructed by any one of them alone, although each of us is responsible for the orchestration of our own responses..." (Linda Seidel, Jan Van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait: Stories of an Icon , Cambridge University Press, 1993, p. 14). Seidel reminds us in the quotation above that we should not understand our role as a passive one in which we simply reflect the "found" or "given" meaning of a work of art. Instead we need to take an active stance in relationship to the work and make or construct our own understanding of the meaning of a work of art. Seidel describes the role of the art historian as a narrator or story teller. This will be the stance I want us take in considering one of the major examples of Northern Renaissance art, Jan van Eyck's so-called Arnolfini Wedding Portrait.

His work typically portrays the subjects in minute realistic detail and bright colors. Although van Eyck did not invent oil painting, as has been previously thought, he achieved stunning effects with oil paint. Interesting Jan van Eyck has been noted to be important to Renaissance. He is credited with the invention of the oil-glazing technique, which replaced the earlier egg-tempera method. In the early years of the Renaissance, the artist generally began with a monochromatic drawing using egg tempera on a wood panel, and then layers of oil-glazes were painted on top of it. This allowed for rich details and luminous colors (later artists would work directly in oils on canvas, allowing the paintings to become larger and lighter, without warping or insect infestation). Whether or not Van Eyck was actually the first person to use this new medium may be of secondary importance to the achievements of his work, for he was truly a master of meticulous detail and well-planned compositions.

Jan Van Eyck (IKE) was born in the Netherlands.
His paintings are very detailed. He was not the first to use oil paint, but he perfected the use of oil in paints. The colors in his paintings are delicate and have a beautiful shine. He was called "The King of Painters" by people even hundreds of years after his time.
The painting we are studying; The Arnolfini Marriage , is a record of the marriage of the two people in the picture. In modern days, a couple would hire a photographer to record their wedding. Giovanni Arnolfini hired an artist to paint the picture. In addition to being a portrait, it is also a legal record showing that the marriage took place. The artist signs it as a legal document.
You will enjoy looking at some of the details of the painting in the links below.
It is thought that Jan Van Eyck had a brother named Hubert. Supposedly, the famous Ghent Altarpiece was started by Hubert and finished by Jan after his brother's death. This magnificent painting is very large; two stories high and painted in three parts. It is called a triptych (TRIP tik) because it is a picture in three panels.
