Van Dyck or Vandyke, Sir Anthony
Van Dyck or Vandyke, Sir Anthony key , Flemish portrait and religious painter and etcher, b. Antwerp. In 1618 he was received as a master in the artists' guild, but even before this he produced independent paintings in his studio. For a few years he was the skilled assistant and close collaborator of Rubens . In 1620 he was summoned to England by James I, whose portrait (now lost) he painted. The next year he went to Italy, where he studied the works of the great Venetians and painted a series of portraits of the Genoese nobility. These pictures, many of them still in the palaces of the Doria, Balbi, Durazzo, and Grimaldi families, show Van Dyck's extraordinary gift for aristocratic portraiture. Van Dyck conferred upon his sitters elegance, dignity, and refinement, qualities pleasing to royalty and aristocracy. An outstanding example is the portrait of Marchesa Elena Grimaldi (National Gall., Washington, D.C.). In 1627, Van Dyck returned to Antwerp, where he rivaled Rubens in popularity and painted a famous series of religious pictures.

Sir Anthony Van Dyck
From LoveToKnow 1911
SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK (1599-1641), Flemish painter, was born in Antwerp on the 22nd of March 1599. Though the name of Van Dyck is frequently met with in the list of Antwerp painters, Anthony's pedigree cannot be traced beyond his grandparents, who were silk mercers of some standing. He was the seventh of twelve children of Frans Van Dyck, an Antwerp tradesman in good circumstances. His mother, Maria Cupers, who died when he was scarcely eight years of age, seems to have attained a certain degree of excellence in art needlework . Of the boy's early education nothing is known. He was little over ten when he was apprenticed to Hendrick Van Balen, the painter of many delicate little pictures as well as an occasional collaborator of Rubens and Breughel , and the master of Snyders. From a document in the state paper office at Brussels , relating to a lawsuit between a picture dealer and an Antwerp churchman, which arose out of the sale, in 1660, of a series of Apostles' heads ascribed to Van Dyck, it appears that, as far back as 1615, Van Dyck had worked independently, with pupils of his own, and that his pictures were greatly valued by artists and amateurs. Professor Woermann has identified several of the Apostles' heads here spoken of with some paintings in the gallery at Dresden . Another is in the possession of Earl Spencer at Althorp.

During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the painting of portraits by famous artists was a Genoese tradition and an indication of high social status. For the Balbi family, the private portrait constituted an important new element in their already extensive art collection.
In the 1600s the Balbis living in Antwerp, Belgium were personal friends of Anthony Van Dyck. His father had been in the silk business, as had the Balbi family. Just prior to Gio Agostino Balbi's death in 1622 he invited Van Dyck to Genoa. Gio Agostino died while crossing the Alps enroute to Genoa and when Van Dyck arrived at the Balbi Palace in Genoa he brought the sad news of Gio Agostino's death to the Balbi family and also presented a portrait of Gio Agostino he had painted in Antwerp. It is believed Van Dyck stayed as the family's guest for several weeks before setting up his own studio in Genoa.
Gerolamo Balbi commissioned a number of portraits, including his daughters Battina and Caterina, and his sons Gio Paolo and Bartolomeo, each of whom were on horseback. Gerolamo's inventory included a portrait of himself dressed as Senator, and a second portrait of himself and a dog. His inventory also listed a Van Dyck portrait of his nephews Gio Agostino and Ottaviano Balbi as children. There is another very well known portrait but it is not known if the person in the portrait is his nephew, Gio Agostino Balbi as an adult, because it is one of the "unknowns" painted by Van Dyck (bottom right). Marchesa Balbi (at left) is believed by some to be Gerolamo's third daughter, Francesca. It is thought by others that she might be Gerolamo's daughter-in-law, Ottavia, wife of his son Bartolomeo.

Sir Anthony van Dyck's Portraits of Sir William and Lady Killigrew, 1638 KAREN HEARN
Sir William Killigrew 1655 Van Dyck (1599-1641) was one of the most significant painters to work within the British Isles. In the centuries following his death he had a far greater influence on portraiture there than any other artist. The forms of portrait that he introduced during the years that he worked for the Stuart king Charles I and members of his Court were to be an inspiration to numerous later artists, including Sir Peter Lely, Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Richard Parkes Bonington and John Singer Sargent. Yet until 2002 Tate possessed only a single work by this most influential of masters, the full-length portrait of an unknown lady thought to be a member of the Spencer Family, which had been acquired in 1977. Although delightful, this work was not in tip-top condition.

Anthony Van Dyck (van DIKE) was a renouned Flemish painter born in Antwerp, which was a main port in the Netherlands. His father was a wealthy businessman who bought and sold beautiful fabrics such as silk, satin, and velvet.
He was named after his grandfather, Antoon Van Dyck the Elder who was an artist in Antwerp. He was the seventh of twelve children in the family. His mother Maria died three weeks after Anthony's seventh birthday.
At age ten he was apprenticed to a painter, and by age nineteen he himself was a teacher. Later he began working with Peter Paul Rubens. Rubens became like a second father to him. In a couple of years he had advanced to the position of Ruben's assistant. Van Dyck became so skilled, it was sometimes hard to tell whether a painting had been done by him, or by his master, Rubens.
He went to Italy to study and paint. King Charles I (the First) heard about him and how well he painted and called him back to England. In 1632 he became the chief painter for the king. King Charles was so pleased with his work, he knighted him and he became Sir Anthony Van Dyck. He lived an extravagent lifestyle. His income was enormous, but he spent money freely. It was at the king's suggestion he married Mary Ruthven, who was related to the royal family.

Z Anthony van Dyck Biography Sir Anthony (Antoon) van Dyck (*March 22, 1599 - December 9, 1641) was a Flemish painter — mainly of portraits — who became the leading court painter in England. He was also a master of etching.
In July 1632, he was knighted, and in 1633 elected painter to the king. He received a considerable pension and married the daughter of Lord Ruthven. In 1634, he took a short journey to Antwerp, and in 1641, another one to France.
Anthony van Dyck died in 1641 in London, and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral.
Van Dyck had a great influence on English portrait painting. Therefore, some scholars call him the founder of the English school of painting.
Van Dyck was also known for painting portraits of people having short, pointed beards, and that's why this particular kind of beard was named after him a vandyke. During the reign of George III, a generic "Cavalier" fancy-dress costume called a 'Van Dyke' was popular; Gainsborough's 'Blue Boy' is wearing such a 'Van Dyke' outfit. The oil paint pigment van Dyck brown is named after him. Anthony van Dyck Resources Contact Us Sitemap

In 1999 Antwerp remembered the 400th year of the birth of Anthony Van Dyck, therefore the committee of Monumental Churches wished to accentuate the relation of the master with his own Antwerp cultural life. Therefore, pastoral tourism of Antwerp in association with Antwerp Open, the coordinator of the Van Dyck Year 1999, organised a modest but worthwhile exhibition about the many connections of Anthony Van Dyck with the churches and convents of his native city.
When we speak about Anthony Van Dyck we usually think of his marvellous creations as a portrait painter of the English court. But, also his short stays in his native city, Antwerp, were always an opportunity for commissions of portraits of many important people. Not so well known are his contribution as a painter of religious art here.
So, the relation of Van Dyck with the different various monumental churches of Antwerp is in fact greater than is usually known. First of all, in the ecclesiastical archives, it is possible to find some important biographical facts about the Master: from his baptism until his last will and testament. Was he not born in the shadow of the Cathedral?
