Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec came from an aristocratic background, having been born the son of an earl. Even as a schoolboy he showed a talent for drawing. By 14 he had suffered two horse back riding accidents, combined with a serious bone disease which eventually left him crippled for life. His body continued to grow but not his legs, he would remain only five feet tall and suffer pain and embarrassment his entire life.
At the age of 18 Lautrec moved to Montmartre in Paris to study art seriously. He worked with artists Louis Anquentin , Emile Bernard, Degas, Van Gogh and others. He became a frequenter of the the cafes, cabarets and brothels of the neighborhood, drawing from them inspirations for his artistic themes. As the artist's stature grew, several magazines wanted to publish his work, including Le Rire . His subjects, as well as street life, included some of the most famous music-hall performers, with whom he became friends, such as Yvette Guilbert La Goulue Jane Avril May Milton ... May Belfort and several others.

Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec Biography:
  • Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec was born on November 24, 1864. Henri died in 1901 at the age of 37 years old. He died of a stroke.
Interesting Facts: Henri was an impressionistic painter. Henri came from an affluent family. At 14 years old, Henri suffered fractures in each leg and because it never healed properly, this stunted his growth. He was only 4 feet 6 inches tall, and used a walking stick. His subjects that he painted were usually shop girls, countessed, washer ladies, actors, clowns, acrobats, dogs, and a favorite subject was horses. Famous Works:
  • In his pictures of the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret, Lautrec often drew and painted at the same time, giving actiion to every figure and revealing each personality. The painting, " The Circus Fernando, The Ring Master ," is a painting of a white horse running with an acrobat on its back, and a man with a mad face whipping the horse, and there is only a little people in the audience.
Personal Thoughts: "I liked when he painted people and he drew with pencil. And when he painted many colors in the background."

His permanently stunted growth has traditionally been seen as the result of this accident, but more recently doctors have theorized that it may have been the result of a rare genetic abnormality. About Toulouse Lautrec
To this day, Lautrec is the only genuine aristocrat to have gained a serious art reputation. His family were the counts of Toulouse. They owned huge swathes of Southern France, and might, on various occasions in their history, have succeeded to the French throne. The upside of these high family connections is that from an early age Henri was brought up on splendid quantities of good Midi wine, from the family estates, and could, in most cases, have anything he wanted.
The downside is that many centuries of in-breeding had left the family with a range of chronic genetic illnesses waiting to be inherited. Henri, whose parents were close cousins in the usual family manner, appears to have picked up the whole handful. Born normal in stature, he fell down the stairs of the family home in Albi when he was seven, and basically stopped growing. His legs never mended. He was crippled for life.
Energetic and bubbly before his accident, Lautrec turned into the violent, obsessive, sexually rampant alcoholic, whose provocative and untameable behaviour alienated and embarrased his class-obsessed family. Yet during the course of his turbulent life, he succeeded in producing a huge body of work that was truly revolutionary in tone and impact, shattering the distinction between high and low art. He could transform the darkest depths of the human condition into artistic gold.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born on November 24, 1864, in Albi, France.
