Wrought Iron The History of Louis Comfort Tiffany On his return to the United States in 1872, at the age of 24 Tiffany began his first studies in glass and mosaics. Later his experiments with iridescent glass were conducted by exposing hot glass to a series of fumes and metallic oxides. Over the years Tiffany Studios would produce many stained glass windows, lamps and glass vessels using his famous “iridescent” glass. Tiffany was inspired by Thomas Edison’s new invention the incandescent filament light bulb. He was among the first to create a revolution in home illumination using his colored glass to produce beautiful commercial electric lamps. Effort was made for Tiffany’s artistic products to reach all economic levels sometimes at the sacrifice of company profit. He introduced his style and left his mark in the U.S. by redecorating a number of private homes and public spaces. Mark Twain, Cornelius Vanderbilt and, the presidential White House are listed among Tiffany’s clients. Most Tiffany lamps were made between 1895 and 1920. Today there are many companies that make Tiffany Style lighting in the stained glass tradition. These companies offer many traditional styles and newer contemporary designs as well. TiffanyLampsDealer.com offers the finest of the Tiffany Style lighting manufacturers and is and Authorized Dealer of Meyda Tiffany, Dale Tiffany, Paul Sahlin Tiffany and Quoizel lighting companies.

Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall
The Met has installed a new porch, just in time for winter. It is enormous and luxuriously decorated, a hundred-year-old artifact the size of a house. It is Louis Comfort Tiffany’s famous Daffodil Terrace. Or at least a faithful reconstruction of it. The real terrace belonged to Laurelton Hall, the magnificent Long Island estate that was Tiffany’s masterpiece, his museum, and his home. Laurelton and its grounds were destroyed by a fire in 1957, but the current exhibit at the Met has rendered anew the design and d©cor of its Daffodil Terrace. Also included in the exhibition are pieces from Tiffany’s collection of African, Asian, and Persian art, as well as a generous sampling of the glass creations for which he is best known. A Thanksgiving Day review in the New York Times calls it “a strange and lovely exhibition” and concludes, “While Tiffany is available to us mostly in bits and pieces, objects like these seem to carry whole worlds within them.”

Angel of the Resurrection - 1904
Dialogue by Mark:
A laser device, which by the way stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission Radiation"...a laser uses light to do some sort of work, like play your CD disk or help a doctor do a delicate operation. In today's Masters' Gallery we are treated to an artwork that also uses light...light shining right through the picture. It's a stained glass window built by Louis Tiffany in 1904.
Tiffany is the most famous stained glass artist of all times. When he was a young painter, he decided to decorate the windows in his studio. He wanted to use colored glass like he'd seen in the old cathedrals in Europe. But no one made glass like that any more. Tiffany researched how glass was made. he discovered that different minerals and impurities in the glass careated different colors. When the glass factories refused to make glass like this, Tiffany built furnaces and made his own.
Glass im made by melting minerals together with high heat. The melted glass can be shaped into vases or bottles, or poured out flat to make sheets. Once the glass is cooled, it can be cut into pieces.
It took hundred of pieces of stained glass to build Angel of the Resurrection. Some pieces are big, like the blue over the angel's head. Other pieces are very small, like the feathers in her wings. Some of the glass is painted, like the face and the lettering across the side windows. Every piece of glass is set into a metal framework to create the window.

This is a complete set which originally cost over $150.00. All cars are in mint condition and include the original boxes in 3 of the 4, I'm still looking for the fourth, if found I will include. The engine which was the first in the series is numbered "A0001", meaning it was the first off the production line. Below is a more detailed description of this beautiful set. Inspired by the artistic vision of Louis Comfort Tiffany, these handcrafted train cars are intricate in design and opulent in presentation. Enhanced with hand-set Swarovski crystals, crystalline gems, luminous platinum accents and pewter toned ribbing this nineteenth century train design is constructed of triple-fired heirloom porcelain for a look of rich stained glass. Each Bradford Edition ornament is intricately fashioned with unique characteristics and sets are in great demand by collectors. These ornaments were limited to 95 firing days and are now retired from production.

    Decorator to the Wealthy.
Louis Comfort Tiffany began his career in the late nineteenth century as what today would be called an interior decorator. While helping wealthy clients coordinate the furniture, wallpaper, tapestries, carpets, and light fixtures in their new homes, Tiffany became interested in the decorative possibilities of leaded-glass windows. Rejecting etched and painted glass, he experimented with colored glass. He found most colored glass too dull for his tastes, so he hired chemists to develop richer and more vibrant colors. He also experimented with different types of glass and with double panes. Tiffany's daring techniques resulted in masterful designs that used light as an active element in a way that was previously unimaginable. Tiffany also experimented with multicolored glass in mosaics, designing large, inlaid murals for the Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia and for the National...
