Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 2 items Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), painter and designer of decorative-glass art objects in the art nouveau style. Tiffany was born in New York City. After studying painting with the American artists George Inness and Samuel Colman in New York City he went to Paris for further study. For a time he remained in Europe, painting oils and watercolors. Among his most outstanding paintings is Snake Charmer at Tangiers (1915?, Metropolitan Museum, New York City). Returning to New York he turned his attention to media other than paints. He established a glassmaking factory and experimented with stained glass for decorative-art objects. He is best remembered for inventing a process for making an opalescent glass, known as Tiffany favrile glass, which he used to fashion colorful windows, vases, lamps, and other decorative-art objects. Much prized by collectors today, the pieces are characterized by the curved and delicate lines of the art nouveau style.

By the mid-1890s, the issue between these two great artists had become one of seniority: which of them had first introduced opalescent glass in stained glass windows? The question has remained to this day, with every succeeding generation of books and articles on each artist claiming pride of invention. But historical research provides the answer, along with the reason for the question in the first place. Hubris, financial and social disaster, opportunism, and ultimately market share are in large part the explanation. Prior to 1882, relations between the two artists were not acrimonious. Writing many years later, La Farge related that Tiffany had visited him in the 1870s. La Farge had willingly shown him his experiments with opalescent glass and plating (the layering of one piece over another to achieve colors or effects), clearly establishing that it was he who introduced Tiffany to the material. If we accept La Farge's recollections that he and Tiffany were on apparently good terms at that time, friendly enough for La Farge to show the young artist his work, clearly something went wrong after that.

Louis Comfort Tiffany: Artist for the Ages features more than 130 works of art in a wide range of media including stained glass windows, Favrile glass, mosaics, enamels, ceramics, paintings, photography, metalwork, furniture, and jewelry. Carnegie Museum of Art is the final stop on the national tour of this historic exhibition, which was organized by Exhibitions International and Marilynn A. Johnson, former curator of American decorative arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is the only venue on the tour to exhibit Tiffany's over-sized bi-fold door from the Mark Twain House, which has not been on view outside of the Hartford, CN, house since 1958. Tiffany learned marketing and entrepreneurship from his father. "We are going after the money there is in art, but the art is there, all the same," said Tiffany to Candace Wheeler, one of his partners. His participation in the international exhibitions of the time in cities like Philadelphia, Paris, Chicago, and Turin, Italy made Tiffany and his work widely known in the United States and abroad.

The early artistic jewelry of Louis C. Tiffany
Magazine Antiques July, 2002 by Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen Louis Comfort Tiffany, working during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, is the acknowledged master of virtually every decorative medium. He and his highly skilled craftsmen and women created stained-glass windows, leaded-glass lampshades, glass vases, pottery, furniture, interiors, mosaics, enamel work, and metalwork. Until recently, jewelry was the least - known aspect of his oeuvre. (1) Nonetheless, Tiffany's unique artistic spirit is arguably best seen in the earliest examples of his jewelry designs, when his personal involvement was most intense.

These masterpieces of stained glass appeared in Tiffany designed window panels, light fixtures, and small glass panels. What isn't as well known was that Tiffany also excelled in the fields of interior design and industrial design. Based out of Corona in Queens, New York, the studios were a shining example of a successful retailer of artwork. Tiffany Studios, New York, 1902-38. Louis C. Tiffany was born into a world of riches-most notably of silver. His father, Charles Lewis Tiffany (1812-1902), was well on his way to having created an empire made of silver and jewels when Louis was born. As a young man he traveled extensively and studied art in Europe, returning in 1879 to establish a popular interior decorating firm that was hired in 1883 to furnish a portion of the White House for President Chester A. Arthur. Tiffany continued to travel and to explore new avenues of artistic expression. In Paris he was enthralled by the work of Emile Galle and became close friends with Samuel Bing; on his return to New York he redirected his focus and by 1896 had introduced both his famous stained-glass lamps, now antique Tiffany lamps (lampade lampey lampe), and his line of favrille handmade glass. desk accessories, boxes, and bowls in a wide range of reasonably priced styles constituted the majority of the metalware production. Motifs ranged from abstract Art Nouveau to Egyptian and American Indian designs to natural forms, including dragonflies, flowers, and plants.
