Louis Comfort Tiffany was one of the greatest of the American artists making glass, pottery, jewelry, enamel on copper, and other salable works of art. He was born in New York City and studied art in New York and Paris. For a time he remained in Europe, painting oils and watercolors. Among his most outstanding paintings is Snake Charmer at Tangiers (1915?, Metropolitan Museum, New York City). Returning to New York he turned his attention to media other than paints. The Tiffany metal furnaces of Corona, NY, were started in 1898 and experiments in making pottery began the same year. Tiffany added shades to wide-mouthed ceramic vases purchased from Grueby and other leading art potteries. He continued to purchased ceramics even after Tiffany studios established its own ceramic division in 1905. That same year his firm began to make lamp bases for his Favrile glass shades . The bases were deep ivory-shaded brown. Later bases were green, and a few white or coated with bronze. Many had matte glazes. All were marked "LCT" on the bottom. The

Louis Comfort Tiffany, (1848 - 1934) developed a unique type of glass. In addition to colors found in other art glass, the Tiffany glass shows movement in form and shape. The glass is very versatile. It is found in single as well as multiple-layered glass. Tiffany glass is sometimes iridescent, transparent or translucent as well as opaque. Many colors are used in many different combinations. Regarding rarity of color, gold iridescent, is the most common, then blue, green, white, yellow, brown, amethyst, black, and red. Red is the rarest color. There are also a group of pastel shades, in the same order of scarcity. In decorated iridescent glass, the decorations are usually colored fibers of glass laid on the original piece and hooked with metal wires to form a design. Once the design is applied, two or more layers of glass are rolled on the working board until there is a single layer of glass with the decoration worked in. The shapes and decorations are created to complement each other like no other glass.

Louis Comfort Tiffany, one of the most creative and prolific designers of the late 19th century, declared that his life-long goal was "the pursuit of beauty." With its comprehensive assemblage of Tiffany's work, the Morse Museum's collection uniquely documents that quest. Although his father, Charles Lewis, had founded the most prestigious silver and jewelry company in America, Louis chose another professional direction. Originally trained as a painter, he began studying the chemistry and techniques of glassmaking when he was 24. He developed this interest as a partner in the firm of Louis C. Tiffany and Associated Artists, which in its four years of operation (1879-1883) provided innovative interior decoration for clients ranging from Mark Twain in Hartford, Connecticut to President Chester Arthur at the White House. Information on Louis C. Tiffany and his work Quotes from references on essential Tiffany background,
including notes on authentication and reproductions Provided as a service by Carl Heck Decorative Arts
"In 1879, he seized up the suggestion of Candace Wheeler that he join with Samuel Colman and Lockwood de Forest to form a firm that would apply aesthetic idealism to the practice of interior design. Impelled by Tiffany's leadership and nascent talent, as well as by his father's money and connections, 'Louis Comfort Tiffany and Associated American Artists' thrived until 1885.....A desire to pursue independent endeavors lead to the breakup of the firm in 1885, when Tiffany chose to concentrate on art in glass, establishing his new business later that year." "Tiffany actually had begun his glass experiments about 1875 to 1878, when he was working first at glasshouses in Brooklyn, where his later rival, John La Farge was also working, both being particularly interested in opalescent glass. Tiffany's early patents date from 1880-81. He incorporated the first Tiffany Glass Company on December 1, 1885, which later [1900] became known as Tiffany Studios, and remained in business until 1928 [after 1919 sometimes using the factory's name and mark of Tiffany Furnaces - ed.]. Tiffany trademarked the name Favrile, derived from the old french word for handmade, to generically describe his production." "Louis Comfort Tiffany actually located [c. 1893] his Tiffany Studios factory, called the Tiffany Glass Furnaces, in Corona, Queens.....Here Tiffany functioned as the ultimate authority over more than three hundred workers, designers and artists, glass blowers and gaffers, and artisans of numerous other tasks."

Louis C. Tiffany
Tiffany began his career as a landscape painter but eventually branched out into interior design and the decorative arts. Over the years he formed a number of companies in both Manhattan and Queens that manufactured leaded-glass windows, lamps, mosaics, glassware, enamels, ceramics, metalwork, furniture, and textiles. These works were available at his Manhattan showroom and in fine retail and jewelry stores throughout the United States and Europe.
Special commissions were an important part of Tiffany’s businesses. Many of his clients were wealthy, socially-prominent families seeking unique objects and interiors for their lavish homes. Churches also ordered elaborate interiors, including windows, lighting fixtures, mosaics, and ecclesiastical furniture. Some examples of these interiors can still be seen in New York City.
History of Tiffany Lamps
Tiffany embarked on the production of lamps in the early 1890s. Although the light bulb was patented in 1879, electricity was not widely available until shortly after the turn of the century and even then only the wealthy could afford it. Tiffany’s earliest lamps, made of blown glass or leaded-glass and bronze, were fueled by kerosene. As electric light became affordable and gained popularity, Tiffany began offering his clients the choice of either oil or electric lamps.
Tiffany lamps were available in many different sizes and styles. It is estimated that thousands of lamps, in countless designs, were produced in Tiffany’s workshops. Although multiples of most lampshade designs were created, each one was made unique through the selection of glass. In order to make the lamps even more individual, the majority of Tiffany shades and bases were interchangeable, allowing them to be customized to fit a client’s tastes and needs.
