Abbott Handerson Thayer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search A Virgin (1892-93), painted allusion to Winged Victory of Samothrace Abbott Handerson Thayer August 12 May 29 ) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. As a painter of portraits, figures, animals and landscapes, he enjoyed a certain prominence during his lifetime, as shown by the fact that his paintings are in the most important U.S. art collections. In the last third of his life, he worked together with his son, Gerald Handerson Thayer , on a major book about protective coloration in nature, titled Concealing Coloration in the Animal Kingdom: An Exposition of the Laws of Disguise Through Color and Pattern; Being a Summary of Abbott H. Thayer’s Disclosures . First published by Macmillan in 1909, then reissued in 1918, it had a widespread impact on the use of military camouflage during World War I. He also influenced American art through his efforts as a teacher, taking on apprentices in his New Hampshire studio.

General Note
Abbott H. Thayer's Anticipation of a Computer-Based Method of Working
Roy R. Behrens
Manuscript received 24 March 2000. Abstract This article describes the practice of Abbott H. Thayer (1849-1921) of working on several copies of the same painting, taking each to a different conclusion. It compares that method to the current computer-based practice of using the SAVE AS command to create copies of a digital artwork or design, which can then also be taken to different conclusions. In this brief note, I want to point out a resemblance between two otherwise different approaches to art-making. The first is an unusual painting method that was used about 80 years ago by Abbott H. Thayer (1849-1921), who was then a well-known painter. He may have invented it. The second is a procedure that is now commonly used to create artworks, designs or other results, using personal computers and a wide variety of software.
Thayer's Method
Thayer was an artist, teacher and naturalist from Dublin, New Hampshire. In recent years, there has been renewed interest in his paintings because of the current popularity of angelsThayer often portrayed women as angels in his paintings. Others find of significance his early, influential work in the area of protective coloration in nature and its subsequent application to military camouflage. He was also an influential teacher, counting among his students the book illustrator Rockwell Kent, scientific illustrator Louis Agassiz Fuertes, and the sons of William James, Alexander and William [1].

13. DazzleThayer
It is indebted to American artist abbott Handerson thayer (18491921), sometimes called “the father of camouflage,” who (circa 1909) devised a clever,

Above Thayer's cut-out silhouette approach applied hypothetically to ships. Right Hypothetical dazzle scheme made by superimposing an embedded figure diagram. Thayer referred to natural examples of this method as background picturing , by which he meant that the coloration patterns of animals, while not literal imitations (or pictures), are nonetheless epitomized emblems (an abstracted average pattern) of their customary surroundings. In the words of art historian Ross Anderson, the patterns on animals' surfaces are "a generalization or distillation of the features of those physical settings in which the animal commonly was found, a surface that would be absorbed into a greater variety of specific backdrops." In studies of human vision, Gestalt psychologists and others have investigated embedded figures or "puzzle pictures" (Wolfgang K¶hler called them “camouflaged figures”) in which a simple shape has been adroitly hidden within a larger, more complex surrounding. In pre-computer days, one could make arbitrary compositions in art by overlapping "systems" on layers of tracing paper, viewed on a light table. Today, it is ever so easy to do the same thing (and much more) by using the "layers" function in software such as Adobe Photoshop. This could have been useful as a way to generate dazzle designs, had all that been available in World War I. Angels and Ideal Figures Thayer's angels are his best-known paintings. As one art critic mused: "They come near to us, there is a lovely hint of the human and intimate in them, yet they are not of the earth." Thayer made no attempt to explain these enigmatic figures, saying only that the wings were meant to lift the figure out of the commonplace. Yet for him these winged figures had personal meaning. The first angel was a portrait of his daughter Mary, painted in 1887 at the time of his wife's illness. His later angels appear as protective figures hovering over the landscape that Thayer worked so hard to safeguard. During the same period, Thayer painted some of America's most alluring images of women. Some evoke classical mythology; others seem to step out of the Renaissance. These ideal figures represent a golden age, uncontaminated by the materialist world.
Landscapes and Mount Monadnock Thayer's earliest landscapes were traditional cattle grazing on gently rolling, sunlit hills. At the turn of the century, he developed a broader style of fresh, brisk brushstrokes and thin washes that create the illusion of great distances.
