MASAMI TERAOKA
b.1936, Onomichi, Japan
Lives and works in Hawai‘i, USA
The experience of leaving Japan to study in the United States at the time of the emergence of Pop art had a critical effect on the direction of Masami Teraoka’s work. Grappling with cultural dislocation, he developed a rich, sensual and humorous art practice around his training in the classic techniques of ukiyo-e woodblock printing. Teraoka's work over the two decades of the 1970s and '80s draws on the ukiyo-e tradition to create paintings and prints that explore contemporary themes. McDonald’s, thong bikinis, condoms and computer parts are combined elegantly with geishas, samuri and kabuki characters to deliver astute social commentary on global culture and its sometimes horrifying imaginings. McDonald’s, thong bikinis, condoms and computer parts are combined elegantly with geishas, samurai and kabuki characters to deliver astute social commentary on global culture and its sometimes horrifying imaginings. Since the 1990s Teraoka's artistic approach has adopted the visual language of Northern European and Italian renaissance painting, but continues to comment on current political, social and cultural issues such as AIDS, issues of sexual abuse, media invasion of personal privacy, and the global ramifications of US political decisions.

Pictures from an Inquisition - Masami Teraoka's paintings of Clinton impeachment hearings
Art in America April, 2001 by Eleanor Heartney Shifting from his earlier subversions of Japanese pictorial tradition, Masami Teraoka now draw on the conventions of late medieval European art for teeming, large-scale paintings about topical events such as the impeachment of Bill Clinton. It was in the early 1980s that Japanese-born Masami Teraoka first gained recognition for watercolors in which the realm of ukiyo-e prints clashed with images of the Westernized present. In these playful works, figures that might have stepped out of a woodblock print by 19th-century Japanese master Kunisada can be seen chomping down on McDonald's burgers, wielding video cameras and golf bags or carefully unwrapping packages of condoms. Initially, Teraoka came across as a gentle social critic who used the dissonance between style and content to underscore the absurdities and pitfalls of contemporary life.

MASAMI TERAOKA
The paintings and prints of Masami Teraoka (b. 1936 in Onomichi, Japan) express a tension between ancient art techniques and contemporary social realities. Teraoka gained international prominence beginning in the 1970s for works that fuse the look of Japanese Ukeyo-e wood block prints with themes drawn from contemporary Western culture, such as his series of watercolor paintings McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan (1975), and his 1982 wood block prints 31 Flavors Invading Japan. In recent decades, after living in the west for many years (he now resides in Hawaii), Teraoka has adopted European painting traditions to depict contemporary social issues. He utilizes the triptych format of a gilded medieval altarpiece to address such subjects as airport security screening, pedophilia among Catholic priests, and the ethics of human cloning. 31 Flavors Invading Japan Series/Today's Special (1982) 11in x 16.5in. 35-Color Woodblock Print with Hand Watercolor

That website is also the entry point for the website of his wife, Lynda Hess, who is also a great artist. Both have a very insightful and expanded view of reality.
My Karate is not as good as Masami's artwork. I must still work at it!
As I posted earlier ( My Skilled Friend ), I feel that it is important to compare our abilities to any great artist, musician, scholar, etc. We should not limit ourselves to martial artists.
How did these great people become so great at what they do? And how can we, in our chosen medium of expression, do so?
Respectfully,

Masami Teraoka, whose work
is featured in the Academy of Arts
new exhibit, has a clear view
of East and West
By Suzanne Tswei
Star-Bulletin EVEN if the Los Angeles dry cleaner hadn't destroyed the heirloom black silk kimono his father gave him, and even if he hadn't misplaced the backup kimono, artist Masami Teraoka is saying goodbye to his usual choice of art opening attire. For the reception of "East is West in Hawaii" at the Academy of Arts last night, Teraoka chose Western garb, a reflection of his current state of mind. "I don't think I'm feeling very much Japanese any more," said the 65-year-old artist, who was born to a family of kimono store owners in Onomichi, a small town on the Inland Sea. Nevertheless, the academy is paying Teraoka homage with a special exhibit featuring the Japanese woodblock-like paintings that made him famous. The exhibit is part of the "East is West in Hawaii" show, which also features the work of 21 other Hawaii artists.
