He was born in 1936 in the town of Onomichi , between Hiroshima and Osaka Japan . He studied art from 1954-59 at the Kwansei Gakuin University in Kobe , Japan where he received his B.A. in Aesthetics . He moved to the United States in 1961 and from 1964-68 attended the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles , where he received a B.A. and M.F.A. His early work consisted primarily of watercolor paintings and prints that mimicked the flat, bold qualities of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. These paintings, done after his arrival in the United States, often featured the collision of the two cultures. McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan and 31 Flavors Invading Japan characterize this time period. These pieces blended reality with fantasy, humor with commentary, history with the present.

His artworks are stylistically inspired by the traditional woodblock prints of old Japan, but the content of his work is thoroughly contemporary. With searing Pop art sensibility, Masami-san explores the crisis ridden modern world. Cultural identity, AIDS, technology, random violence, mass consumerism, and war... all are targets for the brush of this powerful modern artist. The works presented here are from Masami-san's AIDS Series and the captions to the works when bracketed by quotation marks are the artist's own words.

10. Welcome To The Masami Teraoka & Lynda Hess Gallery
masami teraoka. Weaving news media, reality, fantasy, visionary, imaginary and otherworldly reality with humor, line, form and color, commentary,
http://www.masamiteraoka.com/
Masami Teraoka and Lynda Hess' Studio Masami Teraoka Weaving news media, reality, fantasy, visionary, imaginary and otherworldly reality with humor, line, form and color, commentary, topicality, and a high level of aesthetics is a challenge. I try to focus on current issues articulated on a metaphorical level rather than recreating a mere copy of reality. Each narrative creates a fantastical aesthetic world where human folly and dilemma are expressed in such a way that the beauty and ugliness of human activity and psyche thrive in a complex pictorial recipe. Lynda Hess My works takes the form of a dream state because this is where we get our communication both directly from our body and from our source. So my paintings are like a dream state- confusing, surreal and mixed up with snatches that look like familiar reality. Also dreams use a "universal" visual language, which is ironically often incredibly difficult to decipher. But dreams communicate much like paintings using metaphor, puns and humor to make their point, so there is often a literal way into the code, which I often draw upon. Masami Teraoka, 1936- Pasadena City College Artist in Residence, 1998 Masami Teraoka, one of the most popular contemporary artists in the world, fuses the techniques used in ancient Japanese watercolor ukiyoe prints with techniques found in the American pop art movement. Teraoka explores themes in American culture utilizing contemporary symbolism, ancient craft and techniques. Dealing with modern issues, Masami Teraoka is known for exploring the "culture clash" of Japan and America. His work has been exhibited in museums such as The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Los Angeles County Museum of Art , and The Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). In 1996, he was honored with an exhibition of his collective work at the Arthur Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C. Evolution of an Artist Born in 1936, Masami Teraoka grew up in Onomichi, a small town wedged between Hiroshima and Osaka on the Sea of Japan. His mother and father ran a kimono fabric store, providing an artistic influence at a very early age. In Japan, he studied art and aesthetics at Kwansei Gakuin University in Kobe. At the age of 25, he emigrated to Los Angeles to study at the Otis Art Institute, where he received his B.A and M.F.A. It was there that Teraoka discovered his fascination with the synthesis of American pop art and traditional Japanese ukiyoe prints. By studying the ancient works of the master woodblock artists including Utagawa Kunisada and Katsushika Hokusai, Teraoka used traditional techniques to create a contemporary style punctuated with contemporary images such as Coke cans, computers and condoms. As he

MASAMI TERAOKA ON THE CUSP
BETWEEN TWO CULTURES From culture clashes and environmental degradation ... by Charles Mason Photos courtesy of The Allen Memorial Art Museum ... to the AIDS epidemic and the increasingly invasive role of technology in modern life Sometimes amusing, sometimes distressing, always provocative, Masami Teraoka's paintings and prints combine elements drawn from traditional Japanese ukiyo-e, American Pop Art, and, more recently, late Gothic and Renaissance religious paintings The Allen Memorial Art Museum has brought to campus a rich collection of the work of one of the most original and exciting artists active in America during the last quarter century. Masami Teraoka continues to challenge the world with his unique artistic vision. Numerous attempts have been made over the last 25 years to pigeon-hole himas a Japanese artist, as an American artist, and as an Asian-American artist. Yet while he is all of these, his highly individual combination of wit, imagination, and skill defies simplistic categorization. Teraoka's images transcend the boundaries of time, space, and culture, and must be interpreted by each viewer on their own terms. more
