Though the country in which he took citizenship (in 1948) was more economically stable than war-torn France, he never achieved the popularity (or sales) that Salvador Dalí enjoyed. Nonetheless, it was Tanguy to whom the next generation of artists turned for inspiration, leaving him with the reputation of a "painter's painter" which continues to this day. Yves Tanguy Qualifié de "druide, guide du temps des druides du gui" par le poète éluard, le peintre Yves Tanguy fut un médium dont le langage onirique reste à décrypter. Les berceuses hypnotiques d'une "petite maman adorée" gravèrent en son cœur la légende de la ville d'Ys. Son voyage initiatique et mystique commença dès l'enfance, en Bretagne, à Locronan, cité des tisserands de la marine à voile, trame où se nouèrent les fils de sa destinée. Fasciné par l'éclairage crépusculaire du bourg, il visionnait au travers d'un verre fumé des présences insolites, des êtres larvaires qui apparurent dans ses tableaux marins. Envouté par le clair-obscur de Vinci, il s'essaie à peindre "à l'aveugle" au travers d'un miroir. Par la suite, il devait utiliser la gouache pour obtenir des effets de glacis d'une transparence nacrée, irradiant une vapeur d'ivoire, la luminance des couchés de soleil des plages bretonnes où il guettait son Rayon vert. Se transformant en "voyant rimbaldien", sa vie fut jalonnée de rencontres fatidiques. Durant son service militaire à Lunéville, il sympathisa avec Jacques Prévert, puis avec Marcel Duhamel. Il habita, rue du Château, avec sa compagne Jeannette. Le couple tirant le diable par la queue, la couturière brodait des sacs du soir pour la haute couture avec Elsa Triolet, future égérie d'Aragon. Par égard pour sa mère, il épousa Jeannette et la famille se retrouvait l'été au Prieuré de Locronan. La bande des surréalistes y vint en nombre. André Breton fut séduit à son tour et dédia au Grand Transparent un poème prémonitoire, "la Maison d'Yves Tanguy, où l'on n'entrait que la nuit".

Yves Tanguy painted landscapes from the world of impossible dreams. Tanguy had no format artistic training. After leaving military service in 1922, he began sketching cafe scenes in his native Paris. He came across the work of Giorgio de Chirico, a painter who was also an inspiration for the Surrealists, and was so affected by it that he decided to dedicate himself to painting. Max Ernst , Tanguy is often missed in the attention paid to the more recognizable stars of Surrealism like Dali and Magritte . Also like Ernst, he is one of my favorites, and I find his paintings have a fascinating ability to pull you in and immerse you in that state where the rational and irrational meet and mix.

He was a cadet in the Merchant Navy and an apprentice officer on a line of cargo boats sailing between Africa and South America. In 1920 he was drafted into the French army, where he met Jacques Prevert, the poet and film director who was to become Tanguy's closest friend and was to influence the direction Tanguy's life would take from that point on. Tanguy joined Prevert in Paris in 1922. During this time, Tanguy saw a painting by de Chirico in the window of a gallery and was inspired enough by this work to become a painter himself. He started his career by doing humorous drawings, his early paintings were done in the manner of de Chirico. He was introduced into the Surrealist group in 1925, met Andr© Breton in 1926 and was counted among the Surrealist painters from this date.
