Short biography and a picture of Indefinite Divisibility (1942).
http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/tanguy/
Tanguy, Yves
Tanguy, Yves (1900-55). French-born American painter. Originally a merchant seaman, he was impelled to take up painting after seeing pictures by de Chirico and in 1925 joined the Surrealist group. In 1939 he emigrated to the USA, where he lived for the rest of his life, marrying the American Surrealist painter Kay Sage in 1940 and becoming an American citizen in 1948. Tanguy's most characteristic works are painted in a scrupulous technique reminiscent of that of Dalí, but his imagery is highly distinctive, featuring half marine and half lunar landscapes in which amorphous nameless objects proliferate in a spectral dream-space ( The Invisibles , Tate Gallery, London, 1951). French painter. He lived in the USA from 1939. A leading surrealist, he created dreamlike desert landscapes peopled by metallic, semi-abstract forms casting long shadows. Self-taught, Tanguy was first inspired to paint by the works of de Chirico and in 1925 he joined the surrealist movement. He soon developed his characteristic style with bizarre, slender forms in a typically surrealist wasteland. hut(2)

Paintings Yves Tanguy's paintings show vast, abstract landscapes, mostly in a tightly limited palette of colors, only occasionally showing flashes of contrasting color accents. Typically, these alien landscapes are populated with various abstract shapes, sometimes angular and sharp as shards of glass, sometimes with an intriguingly organic look to them, like giant amoeba suddenly turned to stone.

    What 20th-century artist was named:
Question 1: A war artist without a war (by himself)?
    Answer: Paul Nash
Paul Nash (1889-1946) was a 20th-century English landscape painter, Surrealist, and war artist. After the wars Nash experimented with Surrealism and abstract art, both of which made for a powerful combination with his stark landscapes . Nash said that he found his personal inspiration in the English countryside, harking back to his childhood fascination with nature. He was especially drawn to areas with a sense of history: burial grounds, ancient forts, Stonehenge. He painted such places of vital and spiritual inspiration repeatedly and fancied himself as following the tradition of mystic William Blake Eclipse of the Sunflower
