MORRIS AT NEMLA
From Florence Boos comes a report on the Morris session at the 1 April meeting of the Northeast Modern Language Association in Wilmington, DE: Richard Currie (College of Staten Island, New York 14260) will chair next year's NEMLA Morris session, and the session's secretary will be Veronica Kennedy. Essays and proposals should consider some aspect of Morris's socialism, and should be sent to Professor Currie by 1 September 1989. Carolyn Collette kindly arranged for a tour of the Delaware Art Museum and visit to the Bancroft collections the next afternoon, and two busloads of NEMLA members made the trip. The careful symbolism of Rossetti's backgrounds seemed more discernible on canvas than in reproductions, and lesser-known works by Hughes, Sandys, and Stillman bore scrutiny well. Among the museum's decorative artwork of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are glazed bowls and tiles, jeweled silver necklaces and vases, book illustrations and embroidered book covers. A second group travelled to Winterthur, site of the largest collection of hand-crafted American furniture in the United States, bought by Henry Du Pont and preserved by his heirs. Only 19 of the museum's 800 display rooms were open without advance reservations, but this North American counterpart of the Victoria and Albert's furniture galleries provided a useful cross-section of furniture from upper and upper-middle class homes of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and early nineteenth centuries. Among other things, visitors remarked on on a mid-eighteenth-century fashion for Oriental designs, a fondness for on-site domestic murals done by itinerant artists, and a shift to somewhat lighter, graceful styles which seemed to follow the American revolution.

    • Research is a complex process . It does not proceed in a linear fashion, but rather is a cumulative endeavor. Give yourself plenty of time for your project and be willing to adjust your thesis as you learn more about the topic. Keep careful records of your research journey: write down complete bibliographic information for the sources you find; note what keywords and subject headings you have used in your searches and which databases you have utilized.

    Pre-Raphaelite Women Artists
Manchester City Art Gallery, January - 22 February 1998
    The Pre-Raphaelite sisterhood
It took more than talent for Victorian women artists to emerge from the shadows of men, says Richard Dorment Pre-Raphaelite Women Artists is the Manchester City Art Gallery's exhibition of pictures by the forgotten wives, sisters and colleagues of the Pre-Raphaelites. It reveals the strengths and weaknesses of a group of artists so obscure - or rather, so neglected - that many of their paintings, watercolours and drawings have never been seen in public before. We all know the reasons why women artists in the 19th century were so rarely able to sustain professional careers. Restricted educational opportunities, limited access to life classes, the demands of marriage, child-rearing and domestic duties all played their part. But before we pin the blame on sexual inequality we should remember that in this country the standards of art teaching for both men and women during the Victorian era were abysmal. It wasn't so much the artist's sex as her economic circumstances that made the difference in the quality of her artistic training. As a number of examples in this show demonstrate, an artist who had enough money to study at the art academies in Munich and Paris was likely to be much more proficient in her craft than one educated here in Britain. Of course the ability to study abroad presupposes an independence that many Victorian women did not have. But even if a painter couldn't travel, the absence of formal training was less of an obstacle to good work than you would imagine it to be. The fluent draughtsmanship and sound painting technique of a self-taught artist such as Rosa Brett (the sister of John Brett, landscape painter and disciple of Ruskin) were by no means unusual. Look at the meticulous observation she brings to her tiny oil study of a chestnut tree in full flower. Applying her vivid colours to a luminous white ground, she captures the way sunlight falls through leaves and flowers to form a pattern of light and shadow on the lawn below. Only the picture's smallness and unfinished state suggest a hesitancy that one wouldn't find in an equally gifted male artist.
