ith a play based on his relationships with women (''Stanley''), an exhibition of his painting opening this fall in Washington and this extensive new biography, Stanley Spencer returns after years of comparative obscurity to the public gaze, as his work and reputation undergo the biggest re-evaluation since he died. Such outbursts came close to getting Spencer into serious trouble: there was at one point a concerted move within the English art establishment to have him prosecuted for obscenity. But he had, from the very beginning of his career, a devoted following, drawn by the sense of absolute commitment that he radiated as much as by his undeniable pictorial gifts. They were recognized even while Spencer was studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he carried off the prizes and was called, not altogether fondly, ''our genius,'' even though his fellow pupils included such talented young artists as William Roberts, David Bomberg and Paul Nash. And although, with what sounds like a maddening mix of genuine spirituality and self-righteous egoism, Spencer alienated some of those who loved and respected him most (notably his first wife, Hilda), he never lacked admirers, and their support helped to carry him through some of the darker moments of his life.

THE ART and VISION of STANLEY SPENCER
First came the seen, then thus the palpable
Elysium, though it were in the halls of hell,
What thou lovest well is thy true heritage
What thou lovest well shall not be reft from thee
Ezra Pound, from Pisan Cantos LXXX1
Introduction At some time during the 1930s the poet Ezra Pound, we are told, was on a visit to an ancient church in Italy and was descending the steps from the nave to the crypt when he chanced to see on the base of one of the great arcaded columns the Latinised name of the mason from Germany who had built it, carved by his own hand. No doubt thousands of churchgoers over the last twelve centuries had seen the name and thought little of it. But Pound was dumbstruck, felled by what he called one of his 'moments of illumination'. In that instant, for him, the centuries vanished and mankind's ancient and universal longing to define a meaning to his existence beyond the imperatives of everyday survival was made manifest . Why else do lovers carve their names on trees?

65. Stanley Spencer
Here in London is further confirmation at Tate Britain that stanley spencer was a worldclass painter, yet of a particularly English conformation.

Stanley Spencer Tate Britain through 24 June 2001 oeuvre . In the Tate Britain exhibition the medium of film is used to convey the achievement at Burghclere, and yet can scarcely convey this. Possibly, improved technology in virtual reality will one day enable such problems caused by the immobility of the Burghclere works to be overcome. Spencer had set about creating in large, squared canvas panels the full series. For the largest of these, Spencer was only able to locate suitably large looms in Belgium. Unfortunately the gluing of these to the walls was also fraught with problems, not least in retrospect being the use of asbestos as a basis for fixing. Into this great series Spencer had woven all his memories of wartime service, both in Salonika and in England. The works stand today as a major tribute, worthy of major recognition as against the apparent obscurity into which the Burghclere Chapel has recessed. The ultimate lesson, too, is that when Spencer's own simple religious faith was in play he conceived his greatest works. This is well evident at Tate Britain currently. Stanley Spencer is at Tate Modern through 24 June.

Stanley was born in Cookham. Berkshire and studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts. In 1914 he began his service with the Royal Army Medical Corps and was sent to Greece under the command of the 68th Field Ambulance Unit. He served as a War Artist in World War II, and produced the well known ship building on the Clyde. After the war, his paintings (influenced by Paul Gauguin) took on a colourful nature, influenced by Christian doctrines.

Stanley Spencer
by Kitty Hauser (Author) Perhaps best known for his paintings of biblical subjects set in and around Cookhamin particular, The Resurrection, CookhamSpencer was also an official war artist during both World Wars. In his paintings and in his life, he reveled in the intense ordinariness of the world he inhabited. His mature art fuses things most often thought of as separate: religion and sex, the real and the imaginary, public and private, the young and the old, the self and others.
