Filed under: Culture, As I mentioned here , we went to the Stanley Spencer Gallery punt (complete with a grey straw boater on his head), and holding forth to an audience of small children who are sitting in the bow of the boat. All around hordes of people in their Sunday finest and larking around in boats, some listening and looking at him, and others pre-occupied with their own affairs. Stanley Spencer also painted a famous series on the Resurrection steelworkers in the shipyards of Glasgow

  • The ship-building ones are wonderful - I went to see them at Imperial War Museum North recently. To see them in print you just don't get an idea of the scale at all. I've been to the Gallery in Cookham before, but years ago, so I may have to re-visit that at some point soon.-
Lyle: I haven't seen them in person, but I would love to¢Â€Â”I love them even in reproduction, so I'm sure they would blow me away if I saw the originals.

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Sir Stanley Spencer (1891-1959), English painter, whose style was greatly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites , a group of mid-19th century English artists who emulated medieval and early Renaissance paintings and their narrative, religious subject matter ( see Renaissance Art and Architecture Middle Ages ). Although Spencer's conservative style and solitary personality distanced him from the mainstream of British art, he influenced a number of artists, including his younger brother, Gilbert Spencer, and later painters such as British artist Lucian Freud Born in Cookham, Spencer studied between 1908 and 1912 at the Slade School in London. During World War I (1914-1918) he was posted to Macedonia, an experience to which he referred in his decorations for the Sandham Memorial Chapel (1927-1932) in Burghclere, Hampshire, England. He held his first solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery in London in 1927. During the 1930s Spencer was troubled by both personal and professional difficulties, but his career revived with his appointment by the British government as Official War Artist during World War II (1939-1945). He was knighted in 1958.

The Stanley Spencer Gallery, opened in 1962, is unique as the only gallery in Britain devoted exclusively to an artist in the village where he was born and spent most of his working life. To Spencer, Cookham was the scene of heavenly visitations and its influence can be seen when touring the village. Set in the heart of the village he immortalised, the gallery occupies the former Victorian Methodist Chapel where Spencer was taken as a child to worship. Not far from 'Fernlea', the cottage where Spencer was born and lived in Cookham High Street, the gallery was opened in 1962 as a memorial through the effort of the people of Cookham and support from far beyond. It can be found at the end of the High Street (opposite the Bel and Dragon pub). The gallery is self-supporting and exhibits are changed during the year. It contains a permanent collection of his work, together with letters, documents, memorabilia, and the pram in which Spencer wheeled his equipment when painting landscapes. It also displays important works on long-term loan, and mounts a winter and summer exhibition each year. Over a thousand works have been shown since the gallery opened.

Courtesy CDS Gallery, New York Before Lucian Freud there was Stanley Spencer, one of the most important English artists of the twentieth century and perhaps the most original anywhere. Look at any one of Spencer's paintings from life-any nude, any portrait- and you recognize Freud's derivations. His figures add little to Spencer's lead beyond the physical weight of pigment. Of the two, Spencer was the more daring and inventive. And he had a beautiful hand, on view at CDS in an intimate gem of an exhibition. The first show of his work in New York in over a decade, it offers 25 drawings, mostly studies from the 1920s to the '50s. Attendance is obligatory. But do not come looking for color. There is only a single painting here: "King's Cookham Rise," (1947) a backyard view on loan from the Metropolitan. The exhibition hinges on the grace of Mr. Spencer's line and the fertile wit and ambition of his compositions.

    Sir Stanley Spencer Stands Alone
Sir Stanley Spencer was not merely an eccentric English oddity, but a major artist who linked thematically and stylistically to his era and so captured the changing nature of the times and places within which he lived. Meridian Masterpiece looks at the life and work of one of the masters of 20th century British art. To listen to the programme, please click here Eccentricities His work equally defied convention. During his commission for the World War II Shipbuilding On The Clyde series of paintings he reportedly sketched on long lengths of toilet paper. His painting, now heralded by the British art fraternity, was not always so warmly received. His tendency to combine biblical themes with contemporary situations shocked audiences, who failed to share his view of Cookham as the New Jerusalem. And despite being something of a late sexual developer, Spencer made up for lost time, shocking audiences with nude portraits of his two wives. Marriage His private life was unconventional and his emotional state was to have a profound impact on his work.

    The paintings of Stanley Spencer
"A village in heaven" was how Sir Stanley Spencer described Cookham, his Thameside birthplace, and the inspiration for many of his hundreds of drawings and paintings depicting scenes of idyllic English rural life. Today, though the village has changed a good deal, it is still possible to walk in and around Cookham, and recognise what inspired Spencer’s work.
At Westward House, stands the magnolia tree immortalised by Spencer. The Ferry Hotel inspired Dinner On The Hotel Lawn , one of the Cookham Regatta series of paintings. A homage was paid to this painting in July 2000 during Cookham’s Millennium celebration, when the scene was re-enacted in tableaux, with Spencer’s grandson John depicting him working on the painting.
Cookham was the setting for Spencer’s New Testament paintings depicting pivotal biblical events occurring in the village. The Resurrection Parents Resurrecting and The Angel were inspired by its church and churchyard.

Born 1860, Munich; died 1942, Bathampton, England
From the 1880s to the 1930s, Walter Sickert was one of London's most influential artists. As instigator of the 'Fitzroy Street Group' he encouraged artists to 'seek beauty in everyday urban surroundings'. The Group formed an exhibiting society, the 'Camden Town Group'. (click image to enlarge) La Hollandaise perfectly represents the kind of painting most often associated with Sickert - a plump nude on a redimentary bedstead. Dramatic immediacy unites with gloomy dissolution. The frankness of the image within its friction of light and shadow is veiled, not from a sense of propriety but through Sickert's life-long adherence to understatement. From the momemt that such paintings as this and Le Lit de Cuivre found their mark among Sickert's contemporaries, their influence has been absorbed by successive generations of British arits, from Bacon and Freud to Auerbach, Hodgkin and Kossoff. . . The animal sensuality of the paintings is detectalbe in some of Francis Bacon's depictions of nudes, both male and female, on isolated beds and mattresses. . ."

English painter. He was born and lived in Cookham-on-Thames, and recreated the Christian story in a Cookham setting. Typically his dreamlike compositions combine a dry, meticulously detailed, and often humorous depiction of everyday life with an elaborate religious symbolism, as in The Resurrection, Cookham He studied at the Slade School from 1910 to 1914, and served in World War I. The influence of his military service is evident in his great mural paintings for the Memorial Chapel, All Soul's, at Burghclere, Hampshire, which depict crowded and active scenes of military life and the Resurrection, a recurrent theme in his work. For most of the remainder of Spencer's work two sources are responsible, Cookham and the Bible, and his pictures are a highly individual blend of the real and the imaginary. Stanley Spencer 1891 - 1959
The year 1991 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Stanley Spencer, an artist of great individuality whose paintings are independent of any particular movement. As all art lovers know, Spencer's name is almost always linked with Cookham, a delightful English village in Berkshire, five miles from Maidenhead. Spencer lived here for forty-nine of his sixty-eight years and it was for him a heavenly paradise where everyday village events were transformed into visionary spectacles of spiritual significance. Cookham remains unspoilt even today. So too do the houses in High Street connected with Spencer and his family. In 1962 the Wesleyan Chapel (now known as King's Hall), where he attended church services with his mother, became the Stanley Spencer Gallery, the first memorial gallery in England. Spencer was born at Cookham, the eighth surviving child of William and Anna Spencer. His father was an organist, and music played an important part in his family life; although not as much as literature and religion. As William Spencer ran a library, the family house, Fernlea (later Fernley) was filled with books. He also read Bible stories to his children and these were to form a vital part of Spencer's compositions, not for their moral significance, but for their imagery. Most of his early works contain biblical images.
